Riparian areas are the areas adjacent to (and influencing) streams, lakes, and wetlands. These are important components of ecosystems which are vulnerable to damage and disruption during forest operations such as harvesting. In British Columbia, riparian areas are classified based on their characteristics and, depending on the class, may require that a riparian reserve zone and/or riparian management zone (collectively, a riparian management area) are implemented for any management activities.
