I think tugger's gayness really depends on how each performer chooses to play it - Stuart plays it pretty straight but in John's portrayal he seems a little more ambiguous - he dances pretty provocatively with some of the toms as well - and I know he's not the only one, apparently it's not unknown for tugger and misto to kiss onstage. I think the original character was probably intended to be completely straight though. Who knows. We must resurrect T.S. Eliot and ask him.
