My husband uses the dog proof traps to catch raccoons in our Barn. He's caught appx 50! They are so destructive, he had no choice! Peanut butter works great in those traps, because they have to really work their paw to get it, and that springs the trap. He stopped shooting them, after they were caught, because it makes a bloody mess. Now he gets a pitchfork, to anchor them down, and stands on their chest. They die quickly and cleanly!

Ask the game warden to check with places who process deer, to see if they'd be willing to process deer he kills,and donate the meat to a homeless shelter, or food bank....or even a church (I know there are rules about selling the venison, but can they donate it?). They likely have people who could use the venison, mostly ground into "hamburger meat". Churches may also have people willing to process the Meat.

Why is it always the trapper that needs to be more mindful of how and where he places his traps.If it’s legal to have a trap attached to a drag in the state and area the trap was set then nothing should have been said.I’m just curious if the dog owner got a speech about a dog running loose on a public hunting and trapping area.This is one of the biggest reasons trapping is a dying sport.

I agree that on public hunting land it's for everyone. I trap but not on public land for this reason. I know a lot of people who hunt these lands and I wouldn't want to have the hassle if I caught one of their dogs . But if I were to trap these lands I would use dog proof traps and hope they would respect me and my right to trap and not steel them . nice work, the warden was cool about the situation but you would have had to deal with the dog by yourself if the trap was anchored. not worth the back and forth about a leash law so you handled it well.
@ShaggyRogers1
@ShaggyRogers1 Жыл бұрын
Not really anything about a leash law, but more about a possible liability thing. If the trap is anchored, then there is no question that the dog wasn't on the right property and that it was a complete accidental no-liability involved trap situation. The trap not being anchored means that OP, Rip n Stick, can't prove that he wasn't trapping on the wrong land. You only need a preponderance of evidence for civil level infractions, which means just more likely than not, or 51% proof. Neighbor's dog is injured. The dog has your trap on its leg. It's now on you to have to prove the dog wasn't where it was allowed to be rather than your traps being in a dangerous location.
@jimshutt7613
@jimshutt7613 Жыл бұрын
you make a fantastic point, one I'd not dispute. young and old trappers should take your words of wisdom to heart. no trapper wants to catch a dog or cat on accident and then to be sued. for me to point out Leash laws was silly..... I always anchor my traps and mostly use dog proofs for coons. but if a Beaver trapper is legally in the right and an unleashed dog gets a good wiff of Back Breaker Lure it will go check that smell out. people who let their dog free range in the woods I have no problem with. I'd feel terrible finding someones pet at the bottom of my beaver side!!!! I bet their next dog will be on a leash! regards!

Pennsylvania game wardens are the best.the game lands are unique, nobody else has them . We are very fortunate in Pennsylvania to have them. Great video. By the way the people need their dog at home not on the game lands. God bless

I never used bait when trapping raccoons. Just sink the traps where you find raccoon footprints. I never had a problem catching them.

I trap and I have dogs, if my dogs aren't in my direct control (never happens) and they get caught, that's only my fault...and the dog's fault unless it was a blind set

I avoided bait when I trapped. You will catch fewer dogs without it. All my raccoon and mink sets were in the creek and my fox traps I only used fox urine.

At least the Warden wasn't a tyrant about it. I had a game warden tell me that spotted bass were on the endangered list and made me release a four pounder. I beat that ticket. He took a picture of the fish for evidence. He was uneducated and wrong.

Where you said it flat in here at about 2:55 if that's private property and it's a natural elevation you might find some arrow heads in there burried a few inches deep. They should be about where the organic material meets the clay.

Done wire your trap direct to the anchor. Wire to the anchor, then wire the trap to that wire. That way the wire has a swivel, instead of bending with the fight of the animal.

What would anchoring the trap solid have done, besides having the dog in the trap where it was set? He was apparently trapping by legal means in a legal area otherwise, he would have gotten a ticket. This sounds like a dog owner problem to me. The game warden should have been giving the dog owner a speech about "animal at large" instead of messing with a legal trapper and trying to give him recommendations.

I just read a comment saying this exact thing but I'm going to say it my way. The Owner of the animal is at fault! Laws for pets running loose should be extremely strict i.m.o.. Hunting with dogs I'm supportive,just allowing your pet dog or dogs to run loose is extremely irresponsible and dangerous. I'm not biased I feel exactly the same way about cats. Dogs will run deer to exhaustion,force them into or across roads,etc.. . Cats have already been linked to spreading diseases to deer and possibly other wildlife. So their actually a biological hazard and not to mention their spree/fun Killers. Cats will kill to quench their natural instincts but are conditioned to eat cat food,so many times they kill and leave it. They create dead zones where the wildlife move away to avoid the predator pressure. If you keep Cats and no longer see any birds,Squirrels,Chipmunks,Voles,Mice,they Avian that naturally feed in those species? Guess what,it's because your Cats have terrorized them out of the area or successfully preyed upon them. I honestly believe if your not a responsible pet owner,you should be legally prevented from owning any! I say this out of experience I was that pet owner in a bad way but the more educated and passionate I've become about being a good Land/Wildlife Steward I've realized my errors. Please spread the word. Also do not quit going to that area. When you recede like that it implies fault and you've done nothing wrong. As Outdoorsmen we mustn't retreat from out rights and utilize the land set aside for us. Thanks!

"Hey can you just trap a bit better, I don't want to have to make this a problem. You want a fresh deer with no question about legality of the meat, by the way?" What a warden.... Imagine getting a call from your buddy about a "free deer", expecting to have so many issues about it being poached etc, and then just be like "the warden shot it and wants to give it away"...
I had to call the WARDEN! MISTAKE KILL - Can't believe I caught this...(RARE)
