I noticed you didnt lower the feed dog and did not use the darning foot for a free motion stitch, just regular sewing method by lifting the foot at every stitch, is this right or did you skip that part?@@DowntownTailoring

Love your videos. Love your industrial machine, too. I only have a 1959 Singer 401A which is not industrial but still a fantastic workhorse of a sewing machine. These alterations I can use for myself right now. Thanks so much.

Ouuuu 1959! It must be a great machine. Cheers 🙂

I just found your video. I love it !!! You make it fun and easy. Subscribing and liking this site. I recently started repairing and mending and my husband's favourite ANCIENT pair of jeans were (I thought) unrepairable. But watching your video today on how to fix the knee holes - worked like a charm. Thank you !!!! And - you are lovely, fun, and so pleasant. You are now my Go To.

The thought of removing a cuff or cutting open a seam in denim has always worried me. You have given me confidence to try this myself. Thank you.
@DowntownTailoring4 жыл бұрын
Oh that’s so great to hear! Remember to confirm that the width of the cuff matches the new width of the sleeve. If it doesn’t, you can taper it a little bit or do a plead. Also, be very very gentle if you’re using a razor blade because it’s very sharp!

I recently bought 3 Gap denim jackets and managed to them just like you showed. At first I tried to do a chainstitch the cuffs on my coverstitch machine, but the edges were too thick at the ends of the cuff. I went back to the regular sewing machine and breezed through it with a heavy duty needle (110/18). I am not going to miss the chainstitch that much on the inside anyway since I don't have to fold the sleeves up anymore.

Use soft T-shirt fabric in knees of jeans instead of denim. It stretches when you bend your knees and is so much more comfortable!! You can even use colorful T-shirts like pastel tie-dye or vibrant colors. Fun!!🧵👖👚
@DowntownTailoring3 жыл бұрын
Agreed. I use T-shirt fabric too sometimes but mostly jeans because my customers feel is more durable. Cheers 😊

Hi. How do you make sure both sides of the garment are sewn together correctly? If new to doing alterations, would you suggest using pins? (Fur future video's, can you tell me what your name is). With thanks.

Hello Allison! Pins are very important and great. I strongly recommend them for everyone, I use pins every day in my job as well, so not just for beginners. My name is Aida :)

Great video. I am a new a sewing and was wondering when you were stitching the straight lines did you back stitch each one? and also did you use a special needle for jeans and what stitch did you use?
@DowntownTailoring3 жыл бұрын
Hi! Sorry for my late response. Yes, I backstitch all the time. It isn't noticeable because my machine was doing it automatically. Cheers 🙂

On the sleeve hem (and pant hem), do you normally pin/measure both arms (legs)? I find that around 30% of human beings are not symmetrical. We always chalk both legs and pin both arms just to make sure the hem length lands at the right place. Would like to hear how you handle this at your shop.

Gday very informative video thank you. I have some work pants with holes and I have my late mothers Janome Combi Model 502 a great machine which I have serviced and I am learning to use. If I feed the pants onto the free arm with the hole and patch how do I start to sew it, as you would normally feed from front to back or do I have to open up a seam, however both seams have been sewn with an Overlocker or Serger I think you call them, any help would be greatly appreciated. Still I'd open it and overcast by hand or make a zigzag to finish back the seam. It's just easier 🙂
