As a retired sailor with blue water voyages behind me, I am able to relive voyaging once again, and I thank you for that. Depends on what you're looking for! Obviously I'm subscribed, but there are tons of great channels out there that I watch more. Sail Life is an amazing, heavy-duty refit and Mads has a fantastic personality. Bryan Sailing is amazing as he rebuilds a heavily damaged catamaran and is such a geek! Sailing Yaba is the ultimate Ship of Theseus channel. Sailing Merewether tours a lot of great places and Millennial Falcon has two of the most energetic and charismatic young sailors out there. I relate better to Sailing Zatara because they're closer to my age (though younger) but I avoid their episodes with the kids. And there are lots and lots more I watch, if only infrequently. Ironically I stay away from the really big channels like La Vagabonde & Delos because they come across really 'smooth' and rehearsed... And I'm not into that.

OMG Arktika at 1:30 !!! Looks like you hauled out right next to Juho Karho's new boat on Alluring Arctic. Hopefully you both meet up again in Iceland or Greenland. The blades on the new sail drive prop look so unconventional. I am intrigued to see how it will perform on Uma over time. Dang that new install sure looks sexy! Great job Dan & Kika!!! Unfortunately, this level of performance is not going to be achievable for the average sailor with a 1972 fixer upper sailboat. Price on the OceanVolt website is at over $50,000 for a system capable of regeneration of 300 watts at just 6 knots. Hopefully, the price will drop with time, as it sure looks like a fantastic system.

Take it from an experienced electric drives design engineer: From what I can determine, the system you have has finally got everything needed to also include proper regeneration. The added servo to feather the propeller to optimize both drive and regen, along with the proper electronic control is basically what it takes. It only took about 20 years which is how long ago I got involved in boat electric drives. BTW, I still have the original drive from back then in my boat! Happy sailing!

I am not an expierenced engenieer,but some common sense let me assume that with that tiny prop( feathered or not) it will not be possible to generate enough energy to charge enough to regenerate for propulsion. 1. Since there is no noticeble speedincrease(6 knots is constant when the system is generating 300 watts or not)that means to me that the max energy is delivered given the size off te prop/ speed 2.maybe the motorcoils are also at their max,but that i doubt,since i assume the motor consumes an multiple off 300 w when driven to propulse. 3. So they have to mount an much( much)100 % at least prop,whith feathering like an brunton prop,but also servocontrolled( they have one now)then they have an much bigger drag / in th e water,as long as they put the system in work mode and there is no to very little speedincrease just forget to generate enough power( 600/1000 watts)

I could spend a long time discussing this subject because it has been part of my job for a long time, everything from these small drives to large wind converters. The control of this process is very delicate in such a way that you need to control the regen to a point where the process retrieves maximum energy. It all depends of how much the spinning prop can be loaded, if you over load it, it will stall if you under load it, you won't produce much energy. It is true that the system will only regen a fraction of the energy the motor will produce when driving the boat, so every watt counts when regening. In the end, 300 or more watts at hull speed is not bad if you can keep it going for several hours.

@@hankgesmag9650 indeed,thats why i mention that that prop is in my opininion far to small to generate the power they really want( 600/800w) Of course a bigger prop will be able to give more power( torque) per / rev but the overall revs will be not significant higher for the same speed( ex 6 knots)exept for lower speeds it will be able to give much more revs( pitching the blades for the given waterspeed( 3 knots ex) So ideally i think a bigger prop,with an sort of gearbox( only when in regeneration mode) augment revs at all speeds....but i now not so easy to achieve. All the systems now give there weakness( in both ways) by the fact that when in regeneration mode there is no slack in speed,the day someone makes an system( and it will be one with a BIG prop, with constantfeathering possibility) that reduces the speed under sail with lets say from 6 knots to 4.5 knots there will be lots off watts !

@@guidouytterhaegen Typically, a prop is calculated for propulsion and not generation. I have sized a lot of props that way. I have not done it, but I am sure that if you dimensioned a prop primarily for regeneration, it would be of larger diameter.

Yes of course. Regen only works while sailing. But we spend much more time on anchor than we do sailing, so wind and solar are still crucially important.

@@romuloyabar9658 I have a 55 inch tv, and I see that it is a seagull. The sun shine on it so it´s a bit golden. And they can fly pretty fast when they take advantage of strong winds. I have several times had the joy of watching seagulls try to chase away eagles from their childs. They can also give you quite a spectacular show when they pratice precision/defence manouvers. ;-)

That's another advantage of Electric Propulsion! Easy to upgrade. Installed my Thoosa EP system in 2008 upgraded to a new controller two years ago and now the system starts to regen at 3.5 knots. Enjoy the new upgrade.

If you want serious regen, you should increase the prop size with at least 30-40%. With a pitch controller the increased size will not mather at all when you motoring. And at 300-400 watt it only breaks with 0.5hp so it will not slow the boat at these wind speeds. But with a bigger propeller you can regen +1500watt and then it will slow the boat.

I'm no expert on the subject of regen, or sailboats for that matter, but yeah, my first thought was exactly this, why is the prop so small? This is slow a moving system (compared to a motorboat) and slow moving props benefit from big diameters. On the other hand, you would think that Oceanvolt should have done some research on the subject. I would assume that this particular system doesn't have the strength for a bigger prop and you would probably have to change out the lower unit and maybe motor for something bigger.

Bigger prop requires smaller pitch for same motor. Smaller pitch = more low end power, but slower top end. It is a tradeoff and I would tend to believe the manufacturer has done all those tests and is well aware of the optimum configuration for their product.

@@rockfordwoods5432 larger diameter propellers are _always_ more efficient for displacement boats at speeds of less than 35 knots. To achieve this however it may require a different gear ratio. Most people would probably prefer a larger prop than they have for increased regen ability as well as higher efficiency in propulsion at all speeds.

I am quite surprised by the small size of the Servo prop, it’s a great tech but you still need blade area in the water to get effective regen, and extract the energy available, given the extra cost of the auto prop option are you disappointed with the amount of regen from a 12 kw motor? This is the problem that Jimmy Cornell had on Elcano, I think the use of standard sail drives, limited to an 18 inch prop, will always limit the system. It would seem that the speed reduction you were seeing whilst regening, shows that you could afford to extract more energy from your sails, what is Oceanvolt’s take on this?

Ah…😍 another Dan’s tech-based-super-smart-innovative-DIY-installation and test-sailing & collecting-data for better future tech improvement for Uma or any other sailing boat for that matter 👍 Since the beginning of my binge watching of this channel, I’ve become so much in love with Dan’s ability of meticulously precise calculation, data collection, building accurate blueprints and the planning, & execution of any and all projects they’ve been working on Uma 🥰 especially what I love so much about Dan is his ability to make any explanation on whatever he is doing or what he’s going to do and for what purpose as simple free speech so smooth & easy to understand, while he is actually working on each project which mostly seemed pretty complicated, such as electrical wiring, renovation of bathroom and main cabin’s complete facelift and improvements, and/or installing mechanical equipments in pretty narrow & tight space, or even take the main mast apart once and reinstall to solve noise and length problems, and so much more, all without making relatively no mess or mistake at all ever💜😘👍 If his work isn’t called meticulously precise, I don’t know what is. Very little energy will be created at low speeds, like in currents. I calculated 0.5knots=0.1Watts, 1knot=1Watts, 2Knots=9Watts, 3Knots=29Watts, 4Knots=69Watts, 5Watts=135W, 6Knots=234Watts, 7Knots=371Watts,10Knots=1083Watts. Matches Dan's real world fairly close (you can't expect perfection as too many variables). The big factor in wind and sea turbines is the the velocity (water speed in this case). Because V is cubed. E.G when v=1 then cubic=1, v=2 then cubic=8, v=3 then cubic=27. The increase is not linear. Higher speed means far higher watts, and lower speed gives bugger all watts. You can calculate the Watts using kW = 1/2 prop area * water density * Velocity^3 * efficiency. Prop area = 0.05m2, total area props sweep (radius squared * PI, I guessed radius=0.13meters), Water density = 1000kg/m3, Efficiency =30% (you can't get all the energy of the water as the water would stop), V = speed in m/s (m/2=knots/1.944).

@@gsh341 Sure testing cost nothing but as I explained the mathematics shows what the results will be. So if you don't have an electric motor you can calculate the results. You can calculate the Watts using kW = 1/2 prop area * water density * Velocity^3 * efficiency.

FYI !! Some folks ONLY read the title of the video. I am considering going electric in my Catalina 30. I have 450W with two PV panels already. My little Atomic 4 is not happy with my neglect. I watched the whole video after a friend told me you were finished with electric motors altogether. We've tried plastic bags. It works ok for some items, but we found they often ripped and then would get wet and dirty quickly. What we've found works best is larger solid plastic containers and tubs, that smaller items get organized in plastic bags inside of.

I just came back to this video to check the system out again. I just sold my Tartan and am now considering my next boat. I would like to consider electric sail drive on the new one. One thing aside from the electric drive and a bit off topic but your boat must smell better than one equipped with a diesel. I found the rear quarter berth would get unreasonably warm after running the diesel for any length of time.

The true test would be at a relatively low windspeed like 10-12 knots true. I bet then you would see a difference. If you are going hull speed and the wind power is excessive as in your testing conditions you can probably drag an anchor behind and you won't notice any slowdown.

Yup. Just about zero propwalk. Which has its pros and cons. Yes it’s a rattle can. Not sure what brand. It’s usually meant for stern drives or outboards. Anything that is aluminum can’t have regular copper based antifoul on it. Pretty much any boat shop has some version of it.

I must admit I was an EXTREME skeptic in the days you were using the makeshift forklift motor. I was always positive with regard to a future when the triad of purpose built electric motors, battery technology/intelligent control systems and mechanical efficiency came together to provide a firm and safe foundation for light displacement sailboats like Uma. I’m proud of you both for your informed dedication to the dream of viable electrical propulsion in high and low latitudes combined with Dan’s growing technical competence and inventiveness. Congratulations, that is a really sweet setup for a sailing boat. I did not understand what you were about until i saw the two prop heads together and that immediately showed why you wanted to go to servos. It is obvious why a sailing cat might get by on the passive head, but the servo is just the final word for sailing regen.

Great improvement! One thing to consider with respect to the generated power and the speed through the water, 300 watts is a bit less than 1/2 horsepower, ignoring efficiency losses. The drag should be effectively something close to the difference in speed the boat would see with around 1 horsepower motor thrust. Another factor to consider is the relationship between any boat's speed and power (thrust). Increasing boat speed when sailing slowly takes a small increase in thrust (or power). In contrast, increasing boat speed when sailing fast will take a huge amount of power. The relevance here is that when you're sailing Uma fast it means the sails are already generating a huge amount of thrust and so taking a little power with regen will probably have no effect on speed (as you saw). But if Uma is sailing slowly the sails are generating comparatively much much less thrust, and so taking a similar amount of regen power will represent a much larger drag increase, and could slow the boat more. Do you know if the regen system modulates prop pitch in an intelligent, continuous way - to keep the motor in a sweet spot RPM for efficiency of the electrical generation? If so, it should also factor in either boat speed or have some bounds with respect to generated wattage - when the boat gets really slow the pitch has to steepen so that the blades don't stall in the water. The system could detect this and back off the pitch when power is dropping.

All the components are aligned and all the hoses and wires are routed in an efficient way.
