Yeah it got pretty loud when it was revving high, I thought maybe it’s the tank/gas cap vibrating lol. I just put up a vid showing the crank and rod- the big end bearing was way worse, more than 1/8 play because the cage fell apart

I built a bike like 10-12 years ago. It still runs today. I've put around 800 miles or more on it. The kit was an "SD stinger" . It's on a cheap Walmart cruiser huffy. I bought upgrade stuff from a place called pirate cycles. Which is long gone I think. I have a higher compression head. A straight pipe intake, a hub adaptor (no rag joint crap), think I have an ngk spark plugs and a better plug wire, better air filter, took the baffle out of the exhaust. I got 5 traffic tickets at one time riding it with a girl friend on the back haha. When my speedometer\odometer was working I was easily getting to 40-42mph. It has set long periods.nyears without starting it. I ran it the other night and let a friend try it. Thought he was gonna burn my clutch, but still works just fine. I always used Lucas semi synthetic oil. Broke it in with about 16-20 : 1. Then used 25:1 mix most of the time after that. Not sure what's in that engine or if it's just the same as other cheap ones but it's lasted great for me. Watching stuff now makes me want to get back into it!
@motoredbikemadness20612 жыл бұрын
That strong oil mix should help it out a ton in longevity, most people don’t run them long enough for it to matter anyways but when it’s getting into the thousands of miles it definitely helps keep the internals happy. I remember seeing pirate cycles ads on the forums back in the day lol at least there’s a lot more cheap upgrade parts now!

I have a phantom 85 version 2 with over a 1000 miles on her I'm a firm believer in breaking them in that means no speeds over 20 mph first tank of fuel and even after brake in you don't want to push it more than 85to90% throttle they can't take it even back in the day on my Suzuki RM 250 dirt bike same thing I'm telling you from experience ride safe brother

Guys, you're better off building a minarelli or buying a complete engine from california motorbikes for $200 like I did (wildcat ultra minarelli), it produces much more horsepower (5-6hp stock!), i dont think will have cooling issues unlike phantoms, has upgraded conrod bearings etc. I port matched the transfer ports on bottom end, spacer and the jug, going to widen up the exhaust port and the ridge inside (not in the cylinder yet), the skirt etc for more horsepower (up to 8-10hp with jog pipe, vm20 carb.) Next thing I gotta do is hone out the cylinder so the piston won't seize or soft seize when it gets hot and expands while the iron jug doesn't in time. Just make sure to replace bearings and take the metal shields off only in the inside on the crank case lol
@TheLouisamite3 жыл бұрын
Is that the first engine they put on the market or the second one,,I have one of both,the first I got didn't last a day and the risk pin bushing failed so they sent me another one with a brass bushing an I have tried hard to kill it ,but it's holding up so far ,, an my first is to,I had to down size the rist pin to a 10mm pin and bearing,,so far it's still going strong
@motoredbikemadness20613 жыл бұрын
It’s the first version engine, the bushing looked like a Teflon layer on top of brass (I opened it up when it was still new). That’s awesome to hear the new brass one is holding up, I haven’t got mine in the mail yet but I was still naturally doubtful since it’s only 1mm thickness

Man too bad they bushed the motor . Was impressed w its responsive torque it pulled good . Did the plug look lean after it blew the bushings ? The chainsaw head dont seem like it would adequitly air cool either prolly heats up quickly
@motoredbikemadness20613 жыл бұрын
Yeah it was definitely lean, it would lose power slightly if I went from 3/4 to full throttle unless the revs were already up. Plug didn’t look ‘lean’ but I was running 16:1 with cheap oil, lots of carbon build up on the plug. I think the temp was around 150c when I checked with an infrared but the reflectivity of the metal throws it off for me unless it’s painted black
@motoredbikemadness20613 жыл бұрын
Did yours pull strong at low rpms? Mine seemed so lean that it was really weak until the rpm picked up, and then had an expansion chamber type powerband lol. Really needed the rpm to get that cfm/vacuum up in the carb. But I wonder if it might have also been ignition timing- did you see LA hovers phantom that would 4 stroke really hard? Mine is the complete opposite of that.. maybe the factory retarded the timing to make it run smooth after he made that video

Harping on a it like that. Did you take the time to break it in. ? First run ? Is it any wonder these engines blow up. You have to take the time to break them in.
@motoredbikemadness20612 жыл бұрын
I did test it briefly before this. But it had a known issue at the time, I recorded it because I knew it was already guaranteed to fail. Nothing to do with break in for a bearing problem

Hi could you tell me if you got any problems with your phantom yet besides it blowing up after the new replacement piston
@motoredbikemadness20612 жыл бұрын
After I put in the new piston, with their 2nd generation upgraded bushing, I haven’t had any new issues. But the piston I installed was actually a chainsaw piston, I only requested the bushing under warranty since the chainsaw piston thing was already in my plans. One thing that needed addressing tho, is the motor ran very lean from the factory (needed the choke for a very long time before it would run normally), and after I added the chainsaw piston it was even worse and I had to drill out the carb jet larger

Yeah the other channel E.R.T. found a 10mm size pin 52mm piston on eBay but usually rare and you need to use 12mm like the stock phantom has. So you still have to use a thin bushing like the original phantom which will always be a weak point, hopefully the newer version phantom bushing (which I have now) is better
