I hate this song tbh. And it's for the reasons you pointed out. It doesn't answer the one question it asks itself, it just keeps repeating pointless metaphors over and over. And out of all the songs in the movie, it feels like it doesn't do anything for it at all. At least the other songs are relevant to the plot, even if they're not all great. But this song was just shoehorned in for the sake of giving the cute animals something to sing. Plus the tone of the song doesn't match anything else from the movie. It just sounds like a generic bad pop song. Definitely the worst song from the movie, and one of the worst Disney songs imo.
@mariatorres-by6du
@mariatorres-by6du 15 күн бұрын
The thing is the song is really relevant to the plot to the point that I would argue ruins the end of the movie. At the end when Magnifico captures Star, Asha looks up as if she was going to make another wish, Magnifico blocks the sky and she looks down and sees the people, and makes the wish upon them because everyone is star, and that works. There are other problems of course, like the fact that Star doesn't do much so we have no idea why making another wish would stop Magnifico, but this is suppose the song that explains the themes and it's so confusing that it makes the entire story confusing.

Seeing how "This Wish" was written before the script and Julia said they had about one storyboard to go off of, I think all these songs are just VERY rough drafts.

@@mariatorres-by6duthat explains it a little because when I heard the lyrics I thought what does a holistic theory about the origin of the universe have to do with wish and wishing. It still doesn’t help because the movie fails to explain if Asha is wishing on all the stars (which corroborates with the ending) or just that one star plushie (which breaks it.)

The only message I get from this song is "you are made of stardust, so you can make your own dreams/wishes come true" which is undermined by Star making all of the animals talk, therefore showcasing powers that none of the animal or human characters possess. Also, Asha is granted a wand at the end so that she can grant other's wishes. That "magic" is from a third-party source. Why not use the basic ambition to create provided by her "star power?"

‘Here I are’ is so frustrating, like you said, we can easily fixed this by changing the word ‘I’ to ‘We.’ And another idea is where the deer did say that, only to be quickly corrected by another (wise) animal. After all, it used to be a deer who can never talk in human speech, and possibly aren’t as literate as the human themselves

You know, I had a thought; I wonder how much more effective the song would have been if it had been sung to Magnifico. Like, the scene could play out where he's stressed out and scared, and he's in the woods, trying to find out what the light was, and the animals sing to him. But in his case, it would be a reveal moment, where he finds out what star magic is, and that it's nothing to be scared of or threatened by, since "he's a star" too and has had the stardust inside him the whole time. Maybe the song helps reveal that the star magic is what caused his "own origin story" because it's what helped him learn to create his own magic. The song could serve as a gentle reality check; sometimes things you don't understand aren't always something to fear, and sometimes the answers to life's biggest mysteries are closer than you think and aren't always found in a book.

It feels like they read all of the books on how to write in a modern, irreverent, Joss Whedon style and applied everything at once without really understanding why it works. So much of these lyrics feel like something they looked at in isolation to make it sound as relatable as possible but then didn't look at how forced and artificial it all reads in sequence.

I think why I hate this song more than any other song in the movie (which are also bad), is because this song is meant to make audiences think bak to the classics of Walt Disney himself. It features talking animals, namely a turtle, squirrels, quails, rabbits, deer, and raccoons. Animals which featured heavily in Disney's early works like Snow White and Bambi. The Bear, Little Jon, is the only exception, but his name is meant to be a reference to Robin Hood. Just like how the idiot deer who says "here I are" is named Bambi. Then there are the talking trees and mushrooms. The short Flowers and Trees was the first Disney short to use technicolor, and the mushrooms are a reference to the dancing mushrooms in Fantasia. In short, the visuals of this song is designed to make you think of all the amazing things Walt and his legendary animators accomplished in the 1930s and 1940s... and yet they squander that legacy with their cheep imitation. If you want us to think back to the gorgeous landscapes and colours of Bambi, why make Wish's Bambi an idiot? If you want us to remember the mushrooms of Fantasia, why make these ones linked to such a confusing line like "But if you just see the mushrooms then you'll understand"? As an admirer of Walt Disney and everything he did for the animation industry, this song infuriates me to no end because it uses Walt's legacy, and the legacy of amazing aniamtors like Bill Tytla, Eric Larson, and Tyrus Wong, to pull at nostialgia baiting and distract from how shiitty their product is. People are going to always remember Snow White, Fantasia, and Bambi for their artistic beauty and strong emotional core. Wish, meanwhile, is going to be laughed at and mocked for the souless corporate product that it is.

Honestly, the only song from Wish that I remember liking is At All Costs (also Knowing What I Know Now, but I wouldn’t listen to it actively). The thing about it that sucks is that it’s SUPPOSED to be the Disney love interest song, and since the movie didn’t have a love interest, it’s weird to think about it being between Magnifico and Asha. Honestly I’m glad it wasn’t an advertised song like This Is The Thanks I Get, but it probably would’ve fit better with the original idea where the star was Asha’s love interest(?) or between Magnifico and the king.

Of COURSE it's in 4/4, the most common time signature because it's easy to sing. Of COURSE it's in C major, the easiest, (IMHO most overused) and (IMHO)most boring key, and transitions a half step up because it's easy. Of COURSE it's aggressively diatonic (only uses the white keys on the piano, strictly in the key signature.). Of COURSE it's in your awkward speed zone where it's too slow to be fun but also too fast to be reflective. Of COURSE the only complicated thing about it is the lyrics. Of COURSE it's a pop song with minimal instrumentation. that stays the same through the whole song. Of COURSE the lyrics will be good when, and only when, I can and want to go skiing in Hell. Disney clearly did not expect their musicians to give a flying pirate's booty about this song, in fact I doubt the songwriters gave a flying pirate's booty about this song, so they made it as easy as possible to just get over with.

Personally as someone who's always felt inadequate, worthless, and just meaningless, the point of that you are a star regardless just warms me up. I know the movie has its faults (like the storyline and animation, I definitely agree with that) but I thought some of the songs were really nice. I can agree. I actually think that Wish's songs are all have good melodies and sounds good, the singers voice are beautiful, they are realy talented. I would humm it when i can. It's the LYRICS that is the problem. It's just doesn't makes sense! Like, i am not a native english speaker, but i can understand songs such as Colors Of The Wind, A Whole New World, Reflection, etc. They have literal meaning and metaphors in it, but the lyrics still sounds able to sing and understand. Wish in the other hand, the more i listen to them, the more i feel like i will not be able to sing it. I even confused what actually they want to say in each of the lyrics. It's feels the writers only put bunch of unusual words to make it sounds creative and artistic yet relatable, but it ended up didn't make any sense and failed to another level.

I am not defending this song per say, it's not good, but I get what it wanted to say. All humans and most of everything on Earth, including Earth itself, is made of star dust. Which is true. Basically, out of all the elements, only hydrogen and some helium was created during the Big Bang. All the other elements are made either in the cores of dying heavy stars, or in supernovae (and other, crazier events). Ancient stars in the past go supernova and leave behind clouds of dust. Which eventually gather together and form a new star and planets around it. But it's really weird to use this fact as a metaphor in a Disney animated movie... and not even explain it properly.

Yeah, it’s really confusing. We’re nebulae in a nursery, but we’re also stars, and nebulae are “star nurseries,” so we’re nurseries in a nursery 😵‍💫

@@godrules311 Absolutely no doubt about that. Lemme tell you that end scene with When You Wish Upon A Star started playing I actually bawled *_not because it was good_* because it was Disney’s centennial and they wasted it! They didn’t dare to dare. I mean I would not have minded it if Encanto was the 100th anniversary movie. Like *_anything_* was better than that! “Broadway song writers? Nah! Next thing you’ll want are those independent storytellers on KZbin! Ha! Hand drawn animation? Ugh! So labourious and expensive.” Like do they NOT know how returns work? They could totally get dough back! I see the issue in trying to sift through thousands if not millions or résumés, but I think people should be submitting detailed pitches with them if they haven’t already because my god Disney needs some flavour and originality. STAT!

@@mattybrunolucaszeneresalas9072 Thing is, the original pitch for Wish WAS good: Starboy, the king and queen as a villain couple, etc. In fact, there’s a KZbinr named Pinkiemachine Studios that is rewriting Wish into a full-length 2D animated film based on the concept art book. You should check it out 🙂

I feel like I'm the only one who enjoyed this song. Though that was mainly because of all the nice visuals. Even so, I feel stupid about myself for liking it (Don't rub it in)

Not to get controversial, but this song kinda sounds like an atheist trying to explain the miracle of life. Endless circular reasoning and meaningless metaphors. Creation without a creator. No real answers.

You’re saying that scientific fact is just circular reasoning and meaningless metaphors 😭. Believe what you want, I believe in religious freedom, but this dig wasn’t necessary. Just say you don’t understand the science, honey, that’s okay.

I did that to avoid any copyright issues. I've already had to jump through hoops to get my previous videos published, and they only used short clips and not the whole song. If you watch Brainless Mastermind's video on Wish, she had to do the same thing.

Similar to what you said about the thematic issues, my problem is not only that it just raises dumb questions and doesn’t answer them, or that it’s just metaphor after metaphor. It’s also that half of this song including the chorus seems very focussed on identity; on saying “you’re a star, I’m a star, we’re all connected”. Despite all the awful grammar and lyrics, the actual themes presented could’ve worked somewhat (albeit a bit on-the-nose) if the previous scenes were about Asha not understanding who she was, or not feeling good in her own body. But - from what I interpreted of it - Wish doesn’t set out to explore themes of identity and self-esteem/dysphoria. That’s just not what the message of the film is. It feels like all the songs and, well, all the scenes, were each made by separate individuals and mashed together at the end, there’s no cohesion to it. I’m so sick of Disney churning out mediocre (at best) films. There’s no excuse for it.
