Golden Gordon, Original air date - 17 October 1979.
Plot: Barnestoneworth United is the worst football team of 1935, who lose every match. Gordon Ottershaw is however their loyal fan, determined to prevent them from being disbanded after their final game. To this end he recruits the players from the renowned winning team of 1922 who turn up to defeat rivals Denley Moor.
Ripping Yarns is a British television comedy series. It was written by Michael Palin and Terry Jones of Monty Python fame. It was first broadcast on BBC 2 between 1976 and 1979.

Wonderful. Some fine character actors like Bill Fraser (the scrap man) and I loved the brief cameo of John Cleese reacting to the wife shouting "I'm having a baby!" down the street. They used some real Yorkshire locations like Kildwick Hall and the old butcher's shop in Bradley near Skipton.

Best ever episode. But, if a father is making his son learn all the team sheets from bygone games, there is no way he is gonna leave the lad at home, while he goes off to watch United play on a pitch just round the corner from their house. That lad will be stood by his side, scarf in one hand, wooden rattle in the other.

On screen you are right but Terry Jones is the genius behind the filming of these series as well as the Python films. So much of the humor is wrapped up in the "real" look of the times represented and the great vision he had in presenting each scene! Its almost like Palin is Jones' muse in this series but that would not be giving Palin credit for his own genius!

I’ve never understood why Ripping Yarns isn’t as well remembered as Fawlty Towers. The basic premise of Fawlty was the same every week, and the slapstick and misunderstandings were really a throwback to classic Brian Rix type farces in many ways. I can only guess that Ripping Yarns is less well known because it sends up British, usually English, stereotypes which we recognise the UK, but others won’t understand. In this episode, for me the best of all Ripping Yarns, the clichés are obvious, right down to the brass band playing the Match of the Day theme. I wonder how many Americans will spot what the jokes are about.

Colin Baker, I’m a yank but enjoy these. I may not get every inside joke, but apparently I get more of the British/English satire than many of my country’s compatriots likely would. But they’re all a bit daft, if you ask me. 😉

There is no limit to the number of episodes I’d be willing to watch! If there were a thousand, I would find the time to watch them all - twice! I can’t remember being this delighted by television, except maybe, when I was eleven holding on to the “rabbit ear” antennae so that Monty Python was visible through the static. We said we had three channels then. But it was really about two and a half! My little son asked once if there were cars when I was a boy😂.

My favorite Monty Python line was 'GEE BUY GUM'... So to this very day, even when his majesty the king is talking to his subjects, I'm thinking of that one Python phrase from all those years ago = 'GEE BUY GUM' 🙂
