I’ve seen a few people say to always wash a quilt before gifting it so if any seams are going to pop you’ll see them before it’s gifted. I didn’t know this when I started quilting and luckily the first few quilts I made were for my kids so any with dodgy seam allowances etc I was able to fix anyway. It’s a good habit to get into and I always wash quilts before I gift them now. It also means any colour runs I can deal with too.

For added stability I would hand stitch the hole first with a simple tiny running stiches to secure the hole (on the batting and the batting only) before applying the applique pieces on. But all in all it was a wonderful expression of love to your mum for the second time around. Thank you very much for sharing.

Very nice quilt. Had to do that with a few of mine, too. Some was me being in a hurry. Some I think I had purchased cheap fabric. I have learned alot about fabric, so I hope I'm done having problems with fabric.😊 beautiful quilt.😊

Thanks for the demo Rachel. I made my granddaughter a quilt several years ago and like you the owner has returned it for some repair. I did find the baggie of scraps that I kept from making the quilt so I figure I’m in good shape to follow your example for the repairs. Ok, here I go!

We have something in common. The first quilt I made was a string quilt made from mens used silk ties. I gave it to my brother and a few years later it did the same thing yours did. I thought maybe it was silk and it didn't hold up so well but I see yours and it did the same thing. It was only 10 years old but maybe my brother was too rough with it. I'm sorry you had the same problem but it was good to see yours did the same thing. Your quilt is beautiful. Thanks for sharing your quilt story it helped me a lot.
@grandmajane25934 ай бұрын
A UTuber suggested that if you use polyester thread it tends to pull the cotton fabric apart after a while. I don't know if that is true, but it's a thought. My quilt did the same thing after some years of use. I didn't pay attention to the thread I used.

My goodness! I just pulled out a rescued top in the same pattern! It got tons of 30's fabrics and a few 40's all sewn by hand! Its queen size and done in quadrants, with a big seam up the middle I could just bind and tack but theres a tiny problem ! None of the blocks were squared so the blocks were fudged a little to a lot .It has a charming effect and Im undecided as to what to do as the edges aren't straight. It such a bright quilt and makes me happy! As I said, its hand sewn and wouldn't be a problem to take apart. 🤔 Im mainly afraid my ocd will ruin its appeal. Perhaps just the major connect seams,across and down ? It causes a slighr bubble . You've done a lovely job in the quilting and repair ! I do love these old paterns ❤😊

I love so much about this for multiple reasons. You mentioned my favorite youtuber (Kate) and I also love Karen Brown. I really don't watch that many, but those are on my list. Also, I've done some purposefully visible embroidery about a year ago on my well-loved, but thinning quilt gifted to me about 20 years ago and am about to do some more. I'm also brainstorming how I want to approach repairs on my very first quilt, which is flannel and in need of several seams being rescued. Thank you for this video.

From my experience with permanent iron adhesives is that they are stiff and bulky and eventually (20 years later) you end up stitching it on anyways. 💖🌞🌵😷

Rachel, Hello. I must say I really enjoy your channel. Your voice is very soothing, and I like to watch/listen while I'm hand stitching my largest quilt ever. I truly enjoy hand sewing. I have 2 years of collecting Liberty fabric and going to finally start my bucket list quilt. Was wondering if you have any suggestions on a pattern where there will not be much waste. At 40$ a yard, I am leery about the cutting. I think it would be cheaper if I moved to the UK 🙂 I absolutely love Liberty!! Have a wonderful day! Deb
@stitchwithrachel8 ай бұрын
Hi Deb, I am glad you are enjoying my channel. I too have been collecting liberty 🤣 so I know what you mean about reducing waste. Whilst I do live liberty hexagons, you do end up with some (a small amount) of scraps. Anything that's squares/rectangles based will have less waste
