Good review and great winter skating. The main advantage of the Riptide for me is that unlike the plastic pivot cups that come stock in all trucks, the Riptides are made of urethane. The reason this matter is that it absorbs much more shock than plastic making riding around town on rough and varying pavement way nicer. Plus the urethane will last longer before deforming. Keep up the great videos!

Geographically the North American continent has many regions and sub-regions. ... In contrast to the common definition of "North America", which encompasses the whole continent, the term "North America" is sometimes used to refer only to Mexico, Canada, the United States, and Greenland. This might clear up the confusion many are under. The UNITED STATES of America(or, the untied states of THE Americas)...Canada would not be part of that, but CAN be considered part of the Northern Americas....just, not the states. I'm Canadian so I understand why it's bothersome to some, but that's just because we assume it's implying something it's actually not.

I've swapped pivot cups before....from I think a pair of Orions, to my thunders...or maybe ventures, I can't remember. But I found that it was more about the frictional resistance of them rather than their density or hardness. I also once found that the pivot nub on the hanger was almost too big or too conical to fit properly in the pivot cup, and so I took it to a bench grinder and gently removed a little material from it's circumference, not at the very tip, but about 1/4" back or so to make it more like the tip of my ring finger, rather than my middle finger if that makes any sense. The type of urethane or polymer that is very resistant to sticking, like if you were to try to tape packing tape to it it was hard to stick...they work better, because there is less binding, and the material squishes out around and rotates smoother against the nub. Also, I have a bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from WPI, and I think about all the same types of things you do....So glad you have this channel and directly talk about all the little things about boards that make them feel the way they do that I always wanted other people to understand when I was younger and there was no youtube.

As a longboard rider, that rides 38", 48" and 59" boards, the riptide pivot cups as well as there bushings are essential to smooth carving and a nice controlled ride. Can't really say for trick/smaller decks. But i definitely notice a difference with 180mm kingpin trucks.
@sleepy22874 жыл бұрын
I know I'm like a year late here, and I'm sure you already know this by now, but you're not supposed to use the stock washers with bones bushings. You completely remove the bottom washer and then use the little tiny metal black one that comes with the bushings on the top, and this is what allows the nut to fully sit on the kingpin.
@peacelovebrad3 жыл бұрын
That applies to Indys or Ace, but Thunder baseplates are too skinny where they contact the bottom bushing. I blew out two sets of Bones bushings on Thunder trucks until I tried them with the bottom washer. I am riding Indys now, no bottom washer and no problem.
@yokaibyte21335 жыл бұрын
For sound reduction, I would just put a little oil in the cup bushings and on the king pin bushings, too. Cheaper and it works really well. By the way, the weather and the surrounding temperature affect bushings too. I find at first bushing are a little stiff and after 5 - 10 minutes they warm up. Kind of like my old body... 😄

They make a massive difference in RKP trucks for longboards. Stock piviots are usually like 90a and unlubricated, leading to squeak and the cups gripping the hanger. In RKP it makes the turn more consistent and precise than stock cups most times. (I do downhill and freeride longboarding)

The biggest difference I have noticed in changing to riptide pivot cups, is in my Bennett Vectors. Vectors are notorious for destroying pivot cups, and after using a pair for only a month, I can attest to this. After changing to riptides, my trucks are noiseless and still going strong after a few months of ldp usage(meaning 250-400mi a month). Also, can tell a difference in freeride, stiffens the truck up just that much more after swapping for premium bushings and cups.

I've been running the Riptide pivot cups and the Riptide steet series KranK bushings on my cruiser setup (Indy 159s) for a while now. I will say that the actual Riptide bushings make the biggest difference over the Bones. They don't have that little plastic piece in the center, so they definitely give you a bouncier feel with more rebound than the bones. If you wanna go absolute nerd level, try out a harder duro on the boardside bushing and slightly softer roadside. They also make shorter barrel bushings for the boardside to fix the issue with the bones changing the geometry.

To remove pivot cups, I always use a butter knife on the edge, and needle-nose pliers to pull them out. These days I find the biggest issue in truck response is actually the cold. I use this Riptide pivot cups in my Theeve TiAX trucks too. They don't make a big difference but I like to customize my parts. I'm also using a KranK cone bottom-bushing from Riptide and Bones Hardcore soft top-bushings. New bushings and pivot cups doesn't squeeze after you broke them in until they get dirty, which happens pretty fast if you skate outside. also if you lube them or use soap, they'll atrackt dirt (even if they're dry and start squeaking again, doesn't matter that much for me. I'd like to see Theeve TiAX 5.5 vs the Independent Stage 11 forged titanium 149 in comparison. They both weight 344g. I guess the Independent turns a little bit better but for grinding both trucks are good. The Indies are a little bit softer so It's easier to break them in as the Theeve-Trucks, which should last longer and have more kingpin-clearance. I saw you reviewing the TiH trucks, which have an hanger made of titanium. Either Titanium doesn't grind that good or it just needs more time to break this trucks in. But the TiAX and TiKings have hangers made of aluminium, so they should feel closer to independent trucks.

I switch all my pivot cups for riptide now. it makes a big difference with some, and a little with others. The WFB formula has a lubricant that allows a bit more turning with their APS formula, which is still more turny than most urethane. my first trucks were gullwing tracker 1's, and I didn't like the bushings. I switched to bones and it was better, but no cigar. I figured if the bushings suck, probably the pivots do too. looking for aftermarket pivots then, I found there was not much to choose from, and riptide seemed to have done the most testing, so I tried the WFB 96a pivots and the ride was much better. some pivot cups are softer than others and some are harder. it depends on how you ride. riptide also makes some harder ones as well, but the majority of testers liked the 96a better. if you're on a budget, I suggest riding your stock pivots as long as possible, but if you have to replace them, I would suggest giving riptide a look. I have not tried riot cups, so I can't offer any feedback there. I have a few trucks they don't offer a pivot cups for, a polster rkp that came with my mellow drive, the mellow drive itself and the unbranded rkp trucks that came with my eggboard. when they need replaced, I'm sending them to brad and tracey at riptide for matching up, or just send in the measurements for the depth, ID, OD and height. there is a lot of crossover in the sizes of cups, so they can generally find you a match. I like to use WFB Chubbys for my boardside bushing if possible. They really let you lean effortlessly while the lubricant lasts, after which they still turn better than most stock bushings. I think sabre truck bushings are also really good, but only come in a few shapes and duros.

Gotta take the caps off those bones hardcore bushings.(looks weird I know) I leave a flat washer under the bottom bushing, but only a thin flat washer, not the typical caps.

Try using the Bones bushings without the bottom washer. That’s how I set up mine on Indy 149s
