I encountered this song in the Pete Seeger version in the sixties and it was well known in Britain in my childhood so the punk generation in Britain knew it. So there was a band called the Notsensibles who played a version of it I think it was the B-side of "I'm in love with Margaret Thatcher" They were the second gig I ever went to and played with The Southern Death Cult who eventually became The Cult. kzbin.info/www/bejne/n3K2p4FoaNOMa68 By the way I read this song as a satire on suburbia and conformity so is a great punk song LOL BTW - Pete Seeger's father was a collector of folk songs in America in the early 20th century and his step-mother was the classical composer Ruth Crawford-Seeger whose music is amazing and she was writing the most amazing American modernist classical music but when she married Charles Seeger she gave up composing to look after her step-children.
