There is also a snowball effect. After consolidating control over one piece of land or colony, they then aggregate those new resources (material and man power) to conquer even more territories.

Not to mention intelligence and innovation of the European people is an advantage they had over the world which led to the technological advantages.
@92alexmaster
@92alexmaster 7 жыл бұрын
991Weeman Yeah, that wasn't really a thing. Europeans were no more intelligent or violent than other peoples 5 centuries ago. The advantage that Europeans had was that there was never a centralized authority in any part of the continent, this allowed a greater degree of flexibility for the implementation of laws that took advantage of greed (like intellectual property), and a lot of competition.

Actually it pretty much was. England in 1000 ad had a population around 1,6 million compare that to the vikings who were kicking there asses front and back, collectively had a population of around 1 million and they were never that united, Denmark who was the main player had a population of around 500k and Norway 200k Sweden who did not really attack England at all had a population of around 400k and the Icelandic commonwealth around 50k. so if you take out Sweden the people left fighting England were just over 750k vs their 1,6 million. But let's be fair and compare them to other nations at the time. france had the highest population in Europe during that time and were sitting roughly at 9 million and the HRE came in second place had a population of roughly 54 million. so yes compared to them they had a relatively low population. But when you compare them to countries relative to their size they had a pretty decent population.
@Jinseual
@Jinseual 7 жыл бұрын
Óðinn Well I was comparing Britain to India when the British was fighting both in India, Europe and the Americas. Their population was tiny compared to India and they had to manage other places around the world ,yet, Britain managed to conquer it.
@ThatIcelandicDude
@ThatIcelandicDude 7 жыл бұрын
Jinseual well to be fair India was way back on tech. look i'm not undermining their achievements but i wouldn't really call it fair to compare their population to any other than European countries. plus India was split into many small kingdoms (some of which were still called tribal) Population matters very little if you don't have the tech to back it up, Look at it this way the Aztec Empire had a population of around 5 million when the Spanish came, yet they conquered them with very little effort (the Spanish having a population of 8,5 million. China had a massive population yet got their asses kicked in the Opium wars.

Donald Trump alot of the north american territory that the British took were French or Spanish or Dutch, just watch the video. India was not a savage backland, it was quite advanced, and they were taken over by the British. The Boers were taken over by the British and they weren't backwards savages. the Ottoman Turks that lost land to britain during and after ww1 weren't defenceless natives. England, before it united with Scotland, wasn't taking lands from defenceless natives, but instead powerful medieval kingdoms. Stop over generalising. alot of the land britain took were not defenceless natives. some, but not all.

There's an error here I think and that's that in 1607 British settled a colony in Hampton Roads/Virginia, USA. It was the first colony in the US and was the first time people began to explore northern america. I'm from Hampton Roads so I'm pretty sure this is correct, plus I was taught this in school and also wiki. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colony_of_Virginia I suggest you edit the video with annotations or something because this was not only there first colony but also the "birthplace" of the usa. EDIT: Just read a comment near the bottom of the comment section but you should still maybe put a annotation because it was actually considered a colony when Jamestown was founded which was in 1607.

Very Interesting video, I liked the part in the 19th century which presented the development of the British Empire, a phase I didn't know much compared to the 18th century. However, England did not become the seat of real power after William the Conqueror's invasion. Normandy, and later Anjou (when the Plantagenets took over) were the places where the Kings of England spent most of their time. Henry II spent most of his life there and is buried in Anjou, Richard I only spent 6 months in England, did not know a word of English at all... Because these Kings were French in theory. They spoke French, came from France, and were vassals to the French kings for their lands in France. It means they were Kings for England, but vassal lords to the French Kings in France, and their counties and duchies part of France. This is what created this mess between England and France, the first one trying to defend the King's lands in France and the other one gradually seeing the Plantagenets as threats and foreigners. Therefore, we can't speak of the Angevin Empire as an English empire, or English possessions in France. Because the lands of the Kings of England in France were not considered english or part of the english crown... The Angevins were counts of Anjou, Dukes of Normandy, and married Eleonor for Aquitaine even before becoming King of England. England was part of the Angevin Empire but not the other way around. This is why we call it "Angevin", because the roots and seat of power was in Anjou, France.

Also we ended the Atlantic slave trade (of which we had previously only been a small part of), and banned slavery across the empire. We came to those backwater shitholes and left behind hospitals, schools, railroads, and agricultural techniques all of which have allowed their populations to sky rocket. You cannot tell me that a continent like Africa which had previously struggled to sustain 40 million people in abhorrent conditions, did not benefit from the empires that conquered them, when afterwards the continent sustains a population of 1 billion people (which is still rapidly growing) in conditions that would've been considered luxury in comparison to China 2 centuries ago. www.reddit.com/r/dataisbeautiful/comments/9valp9/gdp_per_capita_in_africa_vs_china_1980_2016_oc/ Honestly we should've left them in their squalar, most of the empire cost us far more than we ever got back, and we could've gotten nearly the same military value with military bases and port cities.

Interesting map. It is rather odd that the Virginia settlements do not show up until the 1661. Jamestown was established in 1607. Also the maps do not include the several occupations of Acadia prior to the 1710. It should be noted the map (1713) shows Prince Edward Island under British control. Under the 1713 Treaty of Utrecht France retained control of the Islands in the St Lawrence, excluding Newfoundland. The reach of British control in the Maine regions extends too far east. It should not extend beyond the Kennebec River until the Seven Years War.

The top three most impressive empires (in my opinion) 1. The Roman Empire 2. The British empire 3. The Mongol empire
@EvenWaysMusic
@EvenWaysMusic 8 жыл бұрын
+Darcy Puccini You see, the Mongol Empire, to me anyway, is just impressive in size. In reality they did nothing but butcher and massacre. Nothing really impressive or beneficial to mankind. The Roman Empire did much in the advancement of mankind and The British Empire was both impressive in size (obviously being the biggest in history) but also propelled technological advancement and the advancement of mankind like no other.
@EvenWaysMusic

***** When things like globalisation, massive advancements to shipping and transportation, connecting all the colonies with telecommunication, linking every corner of the Empire, and subsequently the countries themselves with rail roads, huge medical advancements and the biggest one of them all: pushing mankind into a completely new era and age out of the Renaissance Era, the Industrial Era: " The Industrial Revolution began in the United Kingdom and most of the important technological innovations were British" which subsequently has led to everything technological we have today and our very way of life. Saying the British Empire wasn't the entity of massive advancement is like saying the Sun isn't hot. It's just false. And yes, it was the largest. Both of these are indisputable facts. We all know about the deaths etc. That's what Empire's do. Name me one that's different. The only reason the British Empire has a figure of deaths higher than any other is simple: It was the largest so naturally that means more conquest which = more deaths. That's just a given and is no different from any other Empire. If you expand, you naturally cause more death. Secondly, during the days of the British Empire the world population was much larger which of course just translates into more possible deaths. All this when IN FACT the Mongol's, in regards to world population percentage, killed waaaayyyy more people. The Mongol's alone in their time reduced the world population by 11%. I don't even think Britain and France did that combined... So yes, all they did was destroy and butcher. That is a fact. Sure they had some literary stuff etc but yh, butchering... So get over yourself and stop crying.

It means right now, if the British Empire hadn't existed, you wouldn't have internet to be on to bitch about your little, insignificant hurt feelings and living as it it was 300 - 400 years ago.
