Love animated chronological maps! Puerto Rico really should have been named and colored green since the Spanish-American War. It may have been confusion with Hawai'i, which I thought had been nominally independent for awhile and I don't remember Spain having claim to it. Anyway, Puerto Rico deserves the attention and its present political, physical, and economic condition warrant clarity.

1842- Prior to this year U.S. claimed a bit of New Brunswick the Webster-Ashburton Treaty settled the dispute 1846- Prior to this year U.S. claimed a bit of Saskatchewan and Brittan claimed a bit of North Dakota, Minnesota and a very small part of South Dakota. 1861- Shouldn't Oklahoma be light red for occupation as it wasn't a state in the confederacy. 1876- It says Wyoming when it should be Colorado 1898- It might need to be clarified that Hawaii wasn't taken from Spain like the rest of the territories that year 1914- Shouldn't part of Panama still be colored as occupied? as the U.S. didn't return the panama canal until 1977 1940- With the fall of Denmark in WW2 (Neutral) U.S. occupies Greenland as a protectorate 1941- U.K. Gives protection of Iceland over to U.S. for the remainder of the war. 1942-1945- You might be able to include the occupations the U.S. had over North Africa, Europe and the Pacific during and due to the war. (also U.S. lost some islands briefly to the Japanese) 1979- The marshal Islands becomes independent from the U.S. 1986- The Federated States of Micronesia becomes independent from the U.S. 1994- Palau becomes independent from the U.S. 2000's- Possibly could include U.S. occupations of areas in Iraq and Afghanistan for the intermediary years between their governments

Borders were uncertain at the time, usually settled only after the treaties that supposedly defined them. A lot of those areas were barely explored when the relevant treaties were first drawn and so borders had to be renegotiated. An example for that is the Webster-Ashburton treaty, another is the treaty that split Oregon territory (which at the time IIRC included British Columbia) along the existing northern borderline. What's being shown here is actually disputed territory pre-resolution. Fortunately we were resolving these disputes with the British, and we'd reached the point in history where both sides really didn't want to mess with each other, so the boundary disputes were settled fairly and differences were usually split down the middle or decided in a way that makes sense for both sides.
