The Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) rose to power after the fall of the Yuan Dynasty, established by the Mongol rule. Zhu Yuanzhang, a former peasant and monk, led a rebellion against the Yuan, founding the Ming Dynasty and becoming its first emperor, Hongwu. Under his rule, China experienced significant economic growth, population increase, and cultural flourishing. The Ming government restored and expanded the Great Wall and established a strong, centralized bureaucracy based on Confucian principles.
During the early Ming period, the famous admiral Zheng He conducted maritime expeditions, enhancing China's influence overseas. The Yongle Emperor moved the capital to Beijing and constructed the Forbidden City, symbolizing Ming power and grandeur. However, over time, the dynasty faced internal challenges such as corruption, inefficiency, and power struggles within the imperial court.
The Ming economy struggled with a silver shortage crisis, causing deflation and social unrest. External threats, particularly from the Manchus, further weakened the dynasty. The final blow came from widespread peasant rebellions and the capture of Beijing by the rebel leader Li Zicheng in 1644. The last Ming emperor, Chongzhen, committed suicide, marking the dynasty's end. The Qing Dynasty, led by the Manchus, subsequently seized control, establishing a new era in Chinese history.
