There's a lot to be said about Rise of Flight, even now in 2022. Pros - Large Selection of aircraft at coffee shop prices makes getting into it extremely easy. When stuff is on sale you can quite easily build a backlog of half a dozen aircraft to fly on 20$. - Three well put together maps for those interested in World War 1 aviation - Fun, and not too terribly complex engine management. For those that want to (you can make it automatic!) you can experience the fun of keeping these old engines properly cooled and their fuel/air mixtures in line to get the most out of them. - Very flexible settings. Including the ability to set joystick curves on individual aircraft, a feature we lost with the newer Il-2 GB. - A solid career mode that can be a lot of fun for those who prefer single player - A decent bit of mods that have been made over the years that help to alleviate some of the base games problems. There is also a wonderfully crafted campaign generator that the community uses to this day that adds even more to the aforementioned career mode. - It's still fairly pretty, despite being over 11 years old. - The PC Min req was made long ago, most modern pcs (even ones you'd pick up from cheap retail outlets) can meet the minimum fairly easily. All else fails, just go download it. It's free to play on both Steam and their own launcher, which can be connected into a singular account. - Good in game view controls, head tracking is really not a requirement and can be alleviated with some intelligent resetting of views in game. - Many modern flight sims feel like you're seriously at a disadvantage without a full set of controls but RoF can be easily made very playable with something as simple as a Logitech 3d pro. - Okay mouse controls, they're not the best thing ever, but if you're used to a game like War Thunder you will feel fairly at home. - No more broken patches. What's done is done, and that leads into the cons. Cons - The game has been abandoned. 1C-777 has moved on to Il-2 Great Battles, and though they are porting the Rise of Flight aircraft to it (via the Flying Circus packs) it is taking time. - The multiplayer scene is comatose. I choose this word specifically because dead really isn't accurate. There exists a huge number of people that still play Rise of Flight, or would return to its multiplayer if others did as well. The Il-2 GB Flying Circus community runs a few servers on their side that still see quite healthy populations during the week. - No built in VR support. For some this is a must, and there has been work done to try and get VR headsets working in it using 3rd party software. To my knowledge, it works okay, but I'm still using a gigantic TV as a monitor so I can't say for certain. - The damage model can sometimes be a bit odd. The aircraft are often much more fragile than they should be. I'm talking 'he put three bullets into my wing in just the right place and it fell off' levels of oddness. This is (mostly) fixed in Flying Circus. If you're looking for a WW1 flight sim then RoF is still a fantastic option, especially if you're on a budget. The other two options are the aforementioned Flying Circus (which is NOT cheap, being only sort of reasonable on sale) or Wings Over Flanders Fields (which is relatively expensive, but cheaper than Flying Circus when not on sale and offers the best single player experience. At the cost of absolutely no multiplayer one at all.)

It even does the oil spill thing, wow! Watching you try of spot your target with your goggles covered in oil gave me a real sense of what i might have felt like to be a fighter pilot in that era. Pretty scary!

Is there a flight simulator for ww1 planes that doesn't really matter with fuel mixture or anything super overly realistic like that. Just engine start, and throttle, and other stuff like that. Also, can I play this without vr? Can I set different controls to look up, down, left, and right

all of the above are configurable in the settings, it can literally be as easy or as difficult as you want it to be, mixture and radiators can be automatically or manually controlled, however since these planes are fairly rudimentary planes like the Airco DH.2 doesnt have a throttle, speed is controlled from mixture, if you play late war this isnt really an issue though.

It did not have the option to fly without the cockpit when I used it. You can see much better in real life so I think it's a level playing field to have the option to remove it.
