Unless the copyright owner wants to make and release a similar game. You see, Nintendo does C&D any mods based on games that they want to make themselves - but not mods or fan-games that they have no interest in making themselves. Because Total War: Rise of Mordor could still steal money from the copyright-owner if the the players prefer it over an official game. Take Pokémon for example - Nintendo doesn't want rival Pokémon games that earn them no money. With the above said it's still horrible news and I think it's a shame because this was the first mod with a map for Attilla.

@@molmonlomek6336 Comes down to pride, if they hired them it would send a signal of "We don't know what we're doing" and they don't want that, because then investors will start asking questions like "Why the hell weren't you doing this before?" and make comparisons and possibly create a divide between the Dev teams, it happened when Ensemble Studios was told to scrap their RTS and make a Halo one to which Bungie employees were pissed off and were purposefully not being helpful as they saw it as "whoring the franchise"

There are many reasons why it does or doesn't happen, but pride is not one of them (people are not hired based on just skills/knowledge. Making a mod is not same as making a game either). And modders that do become commercial developers are not going to publish confidential information discussions on public media platforms. I'm not surpised by this mod being targeted for commercial reasons by copyright holders. I'm surprised it took so long. (dosen't matter If I like the mod or not) Look at this from a non emotional perspective.

I think the modders were naive, it was just a matter of time. Why do you think they don't use trademark names in games? Ie Take a car racing game, a logo on a car. It will be called something like "Fanaray" not "Ferrari" unless they have the rights to use it. Just because a mod is not being sold dosen't mean it has no commercial value/impact to the copyright holder.

This is something I've been seeing more recently in the gaming industry. Alot of Video Game companies have been laying copyright claims to smaller game developers and modder. A game company called Take 2 for example (owners of Rockstar games) have not only taken down the mod community for games like GTA but also sued a small game studio for creating a game called "it takes 2". Hopefully things don't take a turn for the worst in the Total War community and I really hope Rise of Mordor will see its full release

Maybe they will. It’s likely it’s because they are using the designs based on those in the movies. When I worked on Forth Age Total War we specifically stayed away from using the movies for influence, and stuck to the books. That and the films mixed up Rhun with Harad. A point that could be made to strengthen your argument is that Warner Brothers did this back in the day with MERPP (Middle Earth Role Playing Project) for Skyrim. Project was close to release, but this would have been at the same time "Shadow of Mordor" was scheduled to be released, so the project got a cease and desist. At the moment it is only moddb, and I hope it remains as such, but if WB is killing this mod too, I will investigate very carefully in future spenditures if they are involved in what I want to consume. Edit: I also just got made aware, that the Saol Zaentz Co. is selling their Tolkien holdings at an auction. This including rights to games, live events and mechandises.

This also happened to a Lord of the Rings mod called for Age of Empires 2. The CD version that is 20 years old mind you, not any version of th game on steam. That mod was called Tales of Middle Earth and it has been taken down due Copyright as well, you can only find an old 0.6 Beta Version of it....it's a bloody shame.

Occam's razor suggests that they're taking the mod down because of the name really. Bethesda did something similar with Minecraft because they copyrighted the word Scrolls or something. Warner Brothers clearly copyright at the name and a clearly have an issue only with the name.

Listen, here is my theory. 1. There is a new TV show about LOTR being made. The Rings of Power. 2. Warner Brothers has the LOTR rights for gaming. I think they are waiting for the TV shows to generate a lot of new fans, then launch their new LOTR game to cash in. There are more things at play here, moving in the shadows, it does not yet show us its face. But things are going to happen to/with the LOTR universe this year. I feel that this TV show could be the catalist for a LOTR revival, and other companies are preparing for it.

I think you really underestimate some mods out there. If anything, making a mod is easier to do, and therefore has more potential than a new game on an equal engine, as you have more time to iron out kinks and add flavour. If a game has full mod support (and newer games often have) a mod can rival AA games on what it can achieve. The only real advantage a new title would have is that its devs work more efficient and that the game can be launched on a new engine.

Can agree with possibility of those conclusions just want to say one thing that is somewhat based on feelings but also would fit with big companies way of working. The game they would make by themself if it would not be total war may not necessary be close in form to total war. With how companies act it could be any kind of new generation map/battle strategies and they want to take care of any possible comparison with other recent games/mods (like you said DaC and rest would always be the old generation of games) even if it would not work with exactly same mechanics. There are some flaws in the reasoning of this video: -it presumes the dmca is part of an attempt to combat Rise of Mordor. But, as you know, RoM remains available on Nexus. The DMCA does not appear to form part of a hunt. -it presumes WB have taken the time to delve into Rise of Mordor. Ask yourself though: how realistic is it that a busy legal department of a large company took the effort to delve into all RoM pages, download it, assessed the extent it would be a competitive force, etc. -it presumes it mapped out the entire TW LotR modding scene and decided RoM was the threat as opposed to other mods. This is again very unlikely for the same reason I mentioned above. More than that, it is very unlikely the legal department consulted with the marketing department about Rise of Mordor or the developers of a presumed LotR TW. At this stage, I would not lay any links with a LotR TW based on a DMCA of a large legal department that probably took them less than 15 minutes, which is the max I would spend on RoM if I were a WB IP lawyer. This would also explain that the name "Mordor" is the problem, seeing as the inclusion of such a characteristic Middle Earth name is a difference with other mods this video overlooked

1. They legally cannot target the mod, but they can target the platforms. By allowing it on less popular sights, they hurt the mod greatly + the move to Nexus is new, and therefore a ban on Nexus could be in the works, which has to be factored in. 2. I don't think you need to look too deep into it. Just a simple look at a YT video of it can confirm it will be competitive, as a free alternative on an updated engine only has to exist to be competitive. 3. It's not that hard to map out the LOTR modding scene for Total War. You can probably find the main 5 in just 10 mins of research. Google the game and mod. Also, if they have contacts with CA, which they do through Games Workshop, then they can send them a list off all LOTR mods in under 2 mins if need be. I don't think the marketing department is really needed. We don't know it took less than 15 mins. If there is a game in the works, then surely it would have more time. However, with CA's help, they don't really need any more than 15 mins. The made-up probable timing means nothing. Finally, as for the name. The LOTR mod for Rome 1, called The Lord of the Rings -Total War, is still up and deemed fine so far.

We also have to take into consideration that back in the day when Shadow of Mordor came out, MERPP (Middle Earth Role Playing Project) for Skyrim got a cease and desist from WB when they were close to finish, because WB feared the competition. So they are clearly undertaking a show of strength. Back in 2013, my Skyrim Total Conversion Mod that I was a Team Member of (The Middle Earth Roleplaying Project) received a C&D from Warner Bros. We even tried to fight it with a Lawyer, but Warner Bros would not allow us to continue unless we changed our mod name, removed all Copyright Names and changed our beautiful Middle Earth Heightmap so it didn't resemble the Map in the Books so closely. They also would be overlooking our work to decide if we met their expectations. We preferred our Mod die with honor then become a mockery of itself (we discovered some limitation with Skyrim soon after anyways). Warner Bros is ruthless with Copyright. Our mod was safe when EA had the LOTR Gaming License, believe it or not. They never bothered us. Then they got the license sometime soon before 2013 and we were a primary target of theirs (Shadow of Mordor was soon to be released ... and we knew they considered our Mod a threat). Warner Bros will always be viciously litigious. As I tried telling the RoM Mod Team: you guys better have a backup plan if WB go after you. I hope they do.

After units stopped feeling like invidual warriors, Total wars lost their charm for me. In warhammers especially it feels like units work as single blocks that can absord certain number of damage and units are just a visual to show shape of the block. In older total wars when you for example rained arrows on units, only those units who got hit took damage and you could track every injury.

I agree, your comment highlights how I've felt about the modern total wars and why I have lost interest in the newer entries after Shogun 2. The only total war I play nowadays though is Rome Remastered and it's mods as I feel the engine in earlier total wars is more suitable for battles in my opinion. Sad that an entire franchise built around real time battles doesn't have a proper engine to capture these battles as in depth as it used to.

But that time is not now." - I think there will a release because the only settled from moddb to nexus, which is a less popular site for TW-Mods. Ok, i dont know it but i hope it. CA registered Medieval 3 and Empire 2 Domains, so i think there will be no LOTR-TW in the future. In additional to these 2 games they have to develop content and dlc's for Warhammer 3. I simply think they have not the Workforce to develop a LOTR-TW in the near Future. This would be a massiv Monster of TW.

The biggest problem i see is that when community gives devs EXACT what they want to see in the game.Devs just take it add just few bits and that that is added is barebones or extremely shallow versions of what players wanted and then the rest goes to clean der asses and flush down the toilet and THEY BEING PAID TO DO SO.While moders SOME pour their own money,do for free or via donations and for 100x less money and some even at their own expenses make 100x TIMES BETETR GAME that is closer to what people/community asked for even in so restricytive hardcoded enviorment it still tries its bets to circumvent it.

I have a problem with the Retrofit mod. I never used mod before, but when I go to the workshop and subscribe to that mod then It downloads and validates. what then? do I just launch the game? IDK how to play with the mod. Also, I tried launching the game, but it just opens a regular one.

Companies don't want to provide mod support because they mistakenly think it will cut into their sales from additional content. They're so dead wrong - mods have lead to the most successful titles of all time, to new genres of gaming and cement brand recognition into history. It's laughable how out of touch the corporate sector of the industry is. This motion just sends a clear signal "There can only be one Ring of Power". Tolkien's rollin' in his grave.

I wanted to rant about WARNER - which had retracted all their LOTR titles from STEAM during the last two years - some of them praised by nerds for lorefriendly writing (e.g. 'War in thew North') - and considering that corporate AMAZON will 'politically correct' scholar Tolkien, expectations should be entirely abysmal (behold the 'queer black elves corps', rattling their chains for having only one hairdo). But I agree with the plausibility of Your speculations, especially in face of the ongoing infatuation of Creative Assembly with fantasy titles like 'Warhammer'. If there's going to be mod support for new titles, most will be well - although it would take work to port mechanics and to correct battle stats away from counter-tactical unit grinding (I can't tell how much 'Attila' differs from 'Warhammer III' - only that bugs e.g. for external installation paths appear to be similar).
