As military leader he was quite good, yes. As a lord and politican he was on the other hand really dumb, since he was unable to see behind the masks of many people around him (or hear the advice of those people who had a better understanding of such things), and one time placing honor far too high and the other time far too low. The list of his mistakes is very, very long. His downfall was at least to some degree deserved.

@@El_RibsJR Well yes and no. I mean on the one hand he put the honor of Jeyne Westerling high, but on the other hand he tramples on the honor of his own word and on the honor of Lord Frey? I think that make not much sense (and let us not think too hard about what kind of guy goes to bed with a woman of a hostile family the night after he has heard from the death of his two younger brothers). And I would say he was not only the son of Eddard Stark but also of Catelyn Tully, but was far to often not to see that she did know a lot - and while the lady was not without flaws herself, she gave him more than once better advice that he ignored. I also do not think that Tywin was really that much afraid of Robb, at least after he had delt with Stannis and secured a alliance with the Tyrells. After that all Robb could hoped for was some kind of agreement, but the numbers were more and more against him. I mean at the moment Robb was killed he was already loosing the war. He was about to lead his northerners back home to drive away the Ironborn - leaving his "bannermen" in the Riverlands to the "mercy" of the Lannisters. He would be able to hold the Neck, for sure, but he must have known that there was little hope in defending anything south of the Green and Red Fork (and even that border was no longer secure). Here we also see how a curious thing Robb's "honor" was. He was proclaimed king of thr North AND the Riverlands (being half a Riverland-man himself), but always he put the interests of the North higher and was already in the process of abandoning those who had suffered the most in that war (the people in the Riverlands). I understand why he did that to a certain degree, but I think that shows that his honor is much more fragile than he himself thought.

@@El_RibsJR People underestimate both Ned and the Starks as whole... they became kings of the North by defeating hundreds of other lords, they were ruthless, conniving themselves. Ned was an amazing warden of the North, he wasn't underestimating anyone, he knew how to play them his own way... I don't think anyone put in his position had any chance... when basically everyone in King's Landing was his enemy. There was nobody he could rely on, nobody that was faithful to Robert. As for Robb... he was actually pretty cautious politically, what happened at The Twins is almost singular in the 8000 years of history of Westeros. It's unheard of to do something like that...

@@Bayard1503 don't get me wrong the Starks are my favourite especially Robb but who in their right mind would tell the enemy their plan? That's exactly what Ned did and that's what gotten him killed in the first place much like Robb who married Jayne Westerling when he had formerly promised to marry Roslyn Frey. In short the Starks have the worst political mind but the best military one.

The Game of Thrones universe is probably the one that is best for the kind of documentaries Kings and Generals usually do. It has all the components of a real conflict, from tactics and strategies on the battlefield and threatens of operations, to politics, personal interests and inclinations of rulers, and even consider the impacts of the war on the economy, and of the economy on the war. Suggesting some corrections : - at 6:12 you misspoke when you said "their son's murder" referring to Bran. - Tyrion joined Tywin's army only at the crossroads, and by then Jaime had already won his early victories. Tyrion looks over the body of the innkeeper at the very inn where he was captured; she was brutally executed by Tywin as punishment for allowing his son's capture. - Ser Addam Marbrand is a young man, around Jaime's age, so I suggest changing his icon. - Ser Kevan Lannister is Tywin's younger and only living brother.

@@parkbahce100 I disagree at least at this point. While Bolton was as a commander not very good, I think the defeat there was in no way planned. Furthermore in the battle Riverlanders like the Freys also suffered quite some losses, so it is hardly so that Bolton just put "loyal" northerners into the meat grinder - three "full" members of house Frey and also a bastard were captured by the Lannisters. This demonstrated, that the Frey-troops were right in the middle of the battle. It is possible that Bolton planned some of the later defeats, for example when his rearguard was crushed at the Ruby Ford just before the Red Wedding. But at this early stage he was surely not counting on or supporting a Lannister-victory.

@@parkbahce100 No as far as I know he did not - at least it was never confirmed in the books that he send Lord Hornwood (I guess you mean him?) to death. In the description of the battle there are very few details. Bolton is with no doubt a opportunistic predator in any way, but that does not mean that he always follows a great masterplan from the start. I would much more think that Bolton (and his bastard) saw a chance after the death of Lord Hornwood and try to used it in their own brutal way. Yes, some people believe that Bolton planned everything from the start, but there is no proof in the books for that. And with numbers it is also difficult since we have almost none numbers about which house send how many men and how many were alive in the end. We have some rough estimates how strong the armies were, but even that goes often not into much detail (and it is even harder to tell how much the numbers were influenced by disease, desertion, additional men joining the army etc.). I think it would be far too easy to see everything what Bolton did from the end result. His plans may very well have changed over time.

@@reaver1414 Bannermen is a generic term for all armed retainers sworn to a given noble (although more often a Lord Paramount such as the Starks or Lannisters). Lords Bannermen are the lords sworn to that noble, but in that phrase bannerman is used _descriptively,_ as in they are vassals who carry a lord's banners. You do not have to be a lord to be a bannerman: landed knights and masterly houses (those who are not authorised to dispense the King's Justice, such as the Glovers of Deepwood Motte) are also bannermen. It is broadly true that bannermen is used to mean vassals of note as opposed to peasant levees, mercenaries, and freeriders, but there's no reason it means to _prescriptively._ All it means to be a bannerman is to be armed and in the service of a lord.

22:18 This is my one significant criticism of your channel: it would really help if you paid a bit more attention to how your battle animations line up with your narration. Here, for example, your narration correctly describes Robb Stark as attacking the *western* Lannister camp (which is the same one that just tried to send reinforcements across the river). But your animation shows the Stark forces attacking the *eastern* Lannister camp instead, which they actually never did - the eastern camp is the one with the forces that mostly withdrew safely, and the mercenaries who switched sides. This issue has shown up across your various channels. For example, quite a large number of your animations of naval battles for your main channel's Pacific War series have all the ship models sailing backwards. Honestly these aren't horrendous issues, but considering your level of professionalism with almost everything else in these videos, it seems like it should be a relatively simple matter to double-check these animations for basic stuff like which direction an attack goes or whether a ship model is facing the right way.

Great video but many many inaccuracies. Sir Kevan is Tywin's brother not cousin. Also, at Riverrun, the Young Wolf, did not cross the river. Actually, a part of the Tully and stark army attacked from two sides and did not have to cross the river. They were two separate attacking contingents.

Its laughable that GRRM cant finish 1 book in 11 years, when he had already written part of it as of 2011, and there are no news that he is close to finishing Winds of Winter. There is still the big ending which isnt gonna be easier to write than Winds of Winter.

Problem with Robb Stark he was never winning the War. Even if the Red Wedding didn’t happen and if some how beat the Lannisters. He’d still have to try to fight the Greyjoys attacking his coast and Stannis Baratheon the true King would also be coming for him. If the Vale joined him I’d say he’d have a shot. But the North and Riverlands weren’t strong enough to beat the rest of the Westeros
@boobah5643
@boobah5643 2 жыл бұрын
Robb never had "Conquer Westeros" as an objective. His objective was to protect the North and the Riverlands, and convince the Lannisters to trade Ned back in exchange for peace. Mind, it was always going to be tricky to accomplish, because unlike the North's Neck, the Riverlands have relatively porous borders. Mind, fighting with the Greyjoys would have sucked, especially since the navy he had been building was on the wrong side of the continent and moving it was probably more difficult than building a second navy on the ocean side.
@gfilmer7150
@gfilmer7150 2 жыл бұрын
If Edmure didn't attack Tywin at The Fords, Tywin would fallen for his trap. He'd attempt to beat Robb in battle where the high ground and Robb's force being entirely made of cavalry would've broken The Lannister army. Now, if Stannis tried to invade The Riverlands, Robb can easily withdraw from The West (as he was gonna try and reorganize his force to move back North) and gather all of his forces together to meet him. Robb would move more men, more experienced fighters, and the homefield advantage. Stannis' forces would already be tired after Blackwater, as Tyrion's strategy bled the front of the army. Seeing that Stannis won't allow for Northern/River Independence, Robb would have to kill Stannis which means taking King's Landing (he'd also have to take Rosby to kill "King Tommen") and once The Capital falls, Robb's bannermen may force Robb into taking The Iron Throne just as they did with forcing Robb into becoming King In The North.

Actually, he was, the Greyjoys weren't much of a threat, he could deal with them, and they didn't even need to go after them, as long as they took Winterfell back it would be fine. Stannis also wouldn't be a problem either, because Robb had no desire for the Iron Throne, he just wanted his family back, so Stannis didn't have his position threatened, the only problem would be the independence of the north, but that would be the least of Robb concerns, he would easily give up the crown and independence to have his family back, which would be easy to do with Stannis on the throne. And if Edmure hadn't screwed up, Stannis would have won the battle at King's Landing.
