“Stannis and his troops were ground down by enemy attrition and harassing.” More like bad writing, plot armor, and 20 good men. Book Stannis would never have lost to Ramsey who never saw a real battle a day in his life. In the books there is a Grand Northern Conspiracy by the Northern Houses for a Stark restoration. In the books the Boltons days were numbered with many of the “allies” plan to defect to Stannis as well. Stannis would easily have been a good opponent for Dany to fight at the end instead of Cersei.

@Justin Pachi You're absolutely correct that Stannis is the rival that Dany needs, as their philosophies on ruling reflect and deflect off each other in so many ways. But the fanatical denial of the reality Stannis finds himself in needs to stop. He will be defeated in the Books, that is abundantly clear to anyone who has been paying attention to this story. Stannis is nothing more than a doomed pretender, and George has kept him in that role. I will remind you he can summon magic Lannister-Tyrell armies to teleport across the country when Stannis needs to be defeated. Or you can remain in denial until you read the words on the page. It's only that the latter will be harder to bear.

Hell even in the show it's idiotic. The way they show Ramsey's strategy in the show is firmly in the territory of "never interrupt your enemy when he's making a mistake", and a commander of Stannis' caliber would've easily dealt with the way the Boltons attacked. All it takes is those 3 words: "Withdraw to squares!", and cavalry is all but eliminated as a threat as spearmen can keep them out of the lines while archers pick them off. Maybe if the showrunners actually hired someone who knew the first thing about tactics, they'd not have written it in such a stupid way
@whensomethingcriesagain9 ай бұрын
@@avisupadhyay One could easily point to counterexamples though, such as the Scottish schiltron formation or indeed the entirety of the pike-and-shot era. Also, my whole point was based around how the show basically ignored the incoming infantry entirely and made no efforts to include them as a factor in either side's battle plans. Lastly, I'd argue Stannis' men are as close to professionals as existed in this time period. They're knights, men-at-arms, and other veteran soldiers who've been following him for his entire tenure in the show, and we know from all available material that he wasn't the sort to just throw together conscripts, but rather training what men he could gather up to a higher standard of discipline in order to compensate for their lower numbers

This video is very nice to Sansa. There's no mention of her not telling Jon about the vale and none at all of Jon picking to fight with less numbers thinking he had no choice.

I just like how Game of Throne as a story is so grounded the fans agreed technicality in war is important. I mean any story that is not GoT would be filled with people saying "It's fantasy" and what not but this one you can barely see any.

Matt Ries they should do a video when TWOW comes out and Stannis defeats the Boltons. What happened in D&D's shittastic fanfiction is a crime against humanity
@mattries373155 жыл бұрын
@@KingsandGenerals It won't be pretty, things always go wrong in ASOIAF battles for the victors. However the "Pink Letter" and the Theon TWoW chapter gives hints that Freys will drown in the Crofter Village lake, Stannis' death will be faked, and his men will wear Frey uniforms into Winterfell and take it from within. The Boltons are a "2nd Act Villain", they're get cleared off the board early in TWoW.

It's a valiant effort to pretend it made sense. I was almost convinced when I shut off my brain. No really. Great camera work, nonsense strategy/tactics.

Too fuckin' true. This battle won't even happen in the books. The fall of House Bolton is going to be because of Stannis Baratheon and thr other Northern houses.

Apart from anything else, it is absurd an army could approach Winterfell--as the Vale forces are supposed to have done--with neither Stark nor Bolton armies knowing about them.
@DonMadruga725 жыл бұрын
Of course yes. There are several ways to move an army in silence, it has been done several times in history and 2 times in the series (in battles of the book) before that.
@DavidMacDowellBlue5 жыл бұрын
@@DonMadruga72 Name these instances. My bet is that you're talking about a small force moving swiftly over a short period of time. Or an army sometimes might take a path deemed impassible (usually for good reason). I can think of four real world examples of that, which is not the same as depicted here--a relatively open land through which a significant cavalry force is passing for weeks (the distance from the Vale to Winterfell). Likewise it is possible to hide an army's exact position and deceive as it its exact size, but not that it exists, not if it is present for more than (maybe) a few days. Likewise it is possible an army moving as fast as possible might enter an area without properly scouting ahead and encounter an army that way. Which is not the case here. As at Waterloo, both Stark and Bolton armies should have known via scouts the Knights of the Vale were in the North, just as Napoleon and Wellington both knew the Prussians were on their way. Just as the Lannister/Tyrell army should have known there was a large horde of Dothraki (and a dragon) nearby via scouts. A force that large moving (as it must) through a territory for days cannot be successfully hidden even if it didn't have a dragon that needed feeding. The Free Folk were distracted by a full on battle and were not the most professional army so I can just barely believe Stannis' forces could surprise them. The same logic applies to the slave masters besieging Mereen (which however does indicate a grave tactical error on their part). But I cannot think of a single instance in military history wherein one large army could approach another large army over the course of days without both knowing the other was there pretty soon. The nearest example I can think on is Little Big Horn, when Custer leaped to a conclusion that a settlement was smaller and less defended than in fact it was. I think it was in Austerlitz Napoleon did successfully hide a portion of his army during the chaos of battle, but that is not at all the same thing. There was also Midway, wherein a scout plane was delayed taking off, but even so the Japanese fleet soon realized there must be a carrier or two in range. In Operation Market Garden the plan was so hastily put together the staff ignored intelligence involving a panzer group (I forget--it might have been a division) at Arnhem, in part because the Resistance was not trusted. That, again, is something else--a willful refusal to believe intelligence.

There's a possibility Shireen's death paid for Jon's ressurection. Shireen's death was very recent and melting of the snow was either coincidental or used up only a bit of the power granted to Melisandre and the rest remained with her until she brought Jon back to life.
