I won't lie, I've heard these explainations dozens of times over a decade of schooling, and I honestly thought I just wouldn't get it with how it was taught so I didn't bother learning something I couldn't understand. But you're explanation is the best thing I've experienced and I honestly actually understand the differences between the phases and why they are different.

I have been walking right before the dawn recently and notice the different moonphase and its position. I was wondering why it is that way. and this is the best video I have seen so far. Great job. The only thing i am still wondering is why the earth did not block the sunlight at full moon since it is positioned between the sun and the moon.
@EnjoyYourUniverse3 ай бұрын
@@bhyydy6353 An excellent question. I just addressed that on another post. Here’s what I wrote: The answer is it does sometimes. The drawing makes it look like the orbits of the Earth and Moon are in the same plane, but that’s not entirely true. The Moon’s orbit is tilted about 5-degrees relative to the Earth’s orbit around the Sun. When things line up just right, the Earth blocks the light from the Sun and we see a lunar eclipse. It can also happen that the Moon gets in the way and blocks the Sun from hitting the Earth. That’s a solar eclipse. But for most of the time that’s not the case and we see the Moon go through its normal phases

Thank you for this video! It's a great explanation! I have been trying to find information about the impact that latitude has on the moonrise and moonset times and I am having a difficult time finding a good explanation. Any chance you would be willing to try to explain this in a new video? Or do you by any chance know of a video that already does a good job of explaining this? Thanks again!
@EnjoyYourUniverse3 ай бұрын
@@biology197 Thank you for your kind words. The times of moonrise and moonset are certainly going to depend upon latitude, but I am unaware of any videos covering the topic. The overhead view I used in this video is a simplification, perhaps an oversimplification, but it works reasonably well for most northern mid-latitudes. I am unaware of any resources that approach this from different latitudes. It becomes complicated because of the moon’s orbital inclination, which I think would make the times somewhat seasonal as well. This is something not covered in most intro classes, which is about all I teach these days.

The only thing most people don’t explain is how come every one gets to see that phase of the moon. And that’s because the earth takes 24 h to rotate while the moon takes about 28 days
@Happy_so3 жыл бұрын
Q: When do we usually experience the dark side of the new moon? In the night or in a daylight? I presume daylight according to your well explained drawing. If so correct, then why cant we see the dark moon in the broad day light? Please explain.
@EnjoyYourUniverse3 жыл бұрын
You can see the new moon in the daylight, but it is difficult. The new moon is always in the same region of the sky as the Sun, so you need to know where to look to find it without damaging your eyes, and you need a better detector than your unaided eye. Google new moon photos. They’re out there, usually taken with telescopes. But when the moon becomes a thin crescent, then the moon has moved farther from the Sun and it’s easier to see the illuminated side with your unaided eye. You can also see it’s dark side, and with a telescope you can see features on its dark side. This video was made from a naked eye perspective.

@EnjoyYourUniverse Жыл бұрын
The times shown are approximate and vary seasonally. Noon is the time when the sun is on your overhead meridian, not necessarily 12:00 on a clock, and probably not at the zenith for most people.

Ok, why when I see the Sun up 4-6 hand widths in the east, & the moon northwest the same hight, why isn’t the moon fully lit (full)?
@EnjoyYourUniverse2 жыл бұрын
A handwidth is about 10ish degrees. This makes the Sun roughly 45 or so degrees above the horizon and the Moon about the same. That means there are about 90 degrees between the Sun and Moon. You need 180 degree separation for a full moon. The phase described is closer to third quarter than full.

You’re east and west is wrong when finding out the time of the moon, you made me fail my test.
@EnjoyYourUniverse Жыл бұрын
I doubt that. But if it’s true then your professor is the wrong one. Regardless of phase, the moon rises on the eastern horizon, sets on the western horizon, and the 1st quarter moon is on the western horizon at midnight. This is what the video shows. The reversed E and W on the sheet of paper appears the opposite of what you would see on a standard road map, but it is correct for the way the material is presented in this video.
