The NMAI in Washington DC had a great exhibit on the broken treaties. All the US had to do was pull an Indian off the street, have him sign the treaty, and claim he was the chief. If there was a treaty from years earlier, the US always found a way to break it. The Brothertown Indians were moved ten times by the 1850's, to the point that they were shipped from Long Island to Lake Michigan.

I believe the biggest mistake was to put the Noth American People's on reservations. They needed to have been assimilated.
