Except of course that the land was never intended to be sufficient to support a growing population, but not for the reason stated. Few wanted to see the Lakota go extinct (it would be improper to say "nobody" because that wasn't true), but they did want them dependent on the government so that rebellion would be impossible. Something to be learned there. When government makes you dependent upon it, it isn't doing you a favor. It's trying to keep its thumb on you. Never get so attached to government aid that you can't image life without it--because that is how a cycle of dependence starts.

4:16 In 1979, the Supreme Court ruled in United States V Sioux Nation that the United States had violated the Fifth Amendment and annexed the Black Hills without adequate compensation, and demanded the Federal Government pay 105 million to the Sioux Nation. However, the Sioux refused to accept the money, since doing so would mean legally releasing their claim to the Black Hills. As of today, the current value the government has to pay sits at around a billion dollars due to interest, enough to give every currently living Sioux 10,000 dollars, and yet they still refuse. This scene very much reminded me of that.

2:12 “Not a Lakota, not an Arikara, not a Crow…” I reckon he would know a thing or two about the Crow, especially, considering the Lakota stole the Black Hills from them, who, in turn wrested it by force from the Kiowa. Rather amusing to see them blame our people for doing exactly what they did to other indigenous nations prior to Europeans conquest. The Lakota were a very, very powerful people. They were greatly feared and detested by other great tribal nations in the surrounding regions, such as the Pawnee and Northern Cheyenne. Right around the time the U.S. was getting over the turmoil of the revolutionary war, they continued to push other peoples off of their land by force. They are not victims.

The NMAI in Washington DC had a great exhibit on the broken treaties. All the US had to do was pull an Indian off the street, have him sign the treaty, and claim he was the chief. If there was a treaty from years earlier, the US always found a way to break it. The Brothertown Indians were moved ten times by the 1850's, to the point that they were shipped from Long Island to Lake Michigan.
