This track is about a guy that has sleep issues / night terrors. He falls asleep at night and has terrors about killing his wife (the part with the female is his wife talking to him during a terror). One night he wakes up in the woods covered in blood, he discovers that he actually killed his wife. He gets in his car/truck and somehow crashes it. He ends up in a coma in the hospital and he is stuck in a constant terror, him killing his wife over and over again. Hence "face a fate thats worse than death". Pretty intense concept, Vincent said he wanted to try to make this a movie. I'd watch it.

LYRICS Instead of fighting the sickness she is You’ll become the disease Give your life to the witch Give your life to the witch Give your life to the witch Give your life to the witch “You look in their eyes, even in a picture, doesn't matter if they're dead or alive, you can still read 'em. You know what you see? They welcomed it... not at first, but... right there in the last instant. It's an unmistakable relief. See, cause they were afraid, and now they saw for the very first time how easy it was to just... let go. Yeah They saw, in that last nanosecond, they saw... what they were. You, yourself, this whole big drama, it was never more than a jerry rig of presumption and dumb will, and you could just let go. To finally know that you didn't have to hold on so tight. To realize that all your life, all your love, all your hate, all your memories, all your pain, it was all the same thing. It was all the same dream, a dream that you had inside a locked room, a dream about being a person. And like a lot of dreams, there's a monster at the end of it.” “Remember the old days... How everything used to be? We used to be so happy. I miss that. I miss us. How normal it used to be. You and I used to smile so much... Look at all that water. I love the ocean because it reminds me of all the wonderful times we used to have here. The sounds and the sights, and the smell, it just makes me so happy. All of those memories and feelings help me live. The hope that maybe everything will be like they used to be gives me a reason to wake up in the morning. I don’t dream anymore. I know a lot of people say that but I really don’t. It’s hard to dream when everything you used to dream about is a nightmare. I don’t know. I’m sorry. Sometimes I still cling to that memory, hoping. You always look the same while you’re asleep. It’s like reliving an old memory. So calm, so peaceful, almost happy. It reminds me of the old me, the one I thought I knew before all this. I’m not a stranger to these feelings. Loneliness, emptiness, anger. But I thought we worked through them. I thought we defeated them, together. Instead they stand in defiance in the back of my mind slowly inching their way forward again. When’s this going to stop? Tell me. Please tell me. Say you’ll make it better again. I miss the way it was. The way things were. I would rather die than know that I will never relive those moments again. Because this isn’t living, this isn’t anything at all. I would rather die.” She pulls you deeper from the world As you gasp your final breathe Say goodbye to the world And face your fate that’s worse than death She is the one you see when you close your eyes Spared all her fear, paralyzer of lives Gasping for words, she exploded your heart Where is the distance alone in the dark? Give your life to the witch Surrender your last breathe to the witch Give your life to the witch Surrender your last breathe to the witch “But you have no right to call me a murderer. You have a right to kill me. You have a right to do that... but you have no right to judge me. It's impossible for words to describe what is necessary to those who do not know what horror means. Horror... Horror has a face... and you must make a friend of horror. Horror and moral terror are your friends. If they are not, then they are enemies to be feared. They are truly enemies!” Frozen to the bed and terror in my mind She calls out to me. I cannot scream I leave the world behind I cannot scream I cannot scream I cannot scream I cannot scream Bury me in a nameless grave Bury me in a nameless grave Bury me in a nameless grave Bury me in a nameless grave

Good fucking lord. This is what I have always wanted from TAS. This almost feels like pure Doom metal. For someone who was lost a loved one, this song is far too emotional to me, especially the woman's monologue halfway through. Not to mention the use of the greatest scene from "Apocalypse Now", There's just so much to be said about this song. The rest of the album is good but this alone puts it to shame. If TAS retires after this record I wouldn't be upset at all. Masterpiece.

Absolutely beautiful. Instrumentation, lyrics, meaning, all of it. It truly sums up the record. The first ten tracks are the terrors a man has (as he has night terrors/sleep paralysis), about killing, disregard for religion, and losing those he loves. They go into thorough detail about what he dreams about (How he kills someone, burning down shrines and terrorizing people), but this final track truly links everything together, telling the story in whole from the mans perspective. The man falls asleep once more, having another horrible dream, this one about murdering his wife for wanting "things to go back to the way they used to be", presumably a time before the mans night terrors started. He hears her every word as she talks to him in the dream, hence the muffled, dreamy sound of her voice. However, this time he "wakes up", realizing that he has actually killed her, hinting that while he was killing her, he was under the immense pressure of his emotions, and imagined it was just a dream. From here he starts his car, and decides the only thing he can truly do is kill himself. He drives his vehicle, and throws it off the road, presumably off a cliff of sorts, crashes, and waits for death. The paramedics reach him first, hinted by the sound of the sirens, and is rushed to the hospital. This is where the albums title comes into play. We here his heart rate, nice and steady, and as someone else pointed out in the comments, he undergoes surgery. He lives, but is put into a deep coma. "She pulls you deeper from the world. As you gasp your final breathe. Say goodbye to the world. And face your fate that’s worse than death". That final line there is hinting at the fact that in this coma (similar to Metallica's "One"), the man cannot move, cannot see, cannot escape, and can only relive the murdering of his wife, over, and over, and over. "Give your life to the witch" hits hard. It's essentially the man pleading for death. He cannot go on living like he is, and "welcomed it...not at first, but...right there in the last instant. It's an unmistakable relief. See, cause [he was] afraid, and now [he] saw for the very first time how easy it was to just...let go". And he does. "I leave the world behind I cannot scream", but has one last wish. He wants to be buried in a nameless grave. He wants to leave the world unnoticed, and forever so. He doesn't deserve to be named on his tombstone. No fingerprints, no face, gone without a trace...

Going through the comments I see a lot of people leaving their stories / connections to this song. I remember when this record came out, I listened from front to back. The ten tracks preceding this song took me on a journey themselves, but an entirely different experience was to be had listening to this masterpiece. The only way I have been able to describe this song to my peers was to compare it to a movie. Every time I listen, I feel like I see a story unfold behind my eyelids, and its something I have never EVER experienced from anything else in my life. Observer is the purest embodiment of pain, suffering, and hatred in any auditory form. I will never cease to listen to it in full whenever it comes on.

Holy shit, this struck a personal chord with me. The speeches made in the song, and sounds, the lyrics. A lot of this goes deeper than most listeners will understand, and that's just a fact. I saw the fear in his eyes because he knew he was going to die soon. I tried to convince him it was fine. That he lived a full life and should look forward to "the afterlife" or wtf ever. This song can only be heard as intended when played on vinyl. There are certain parts in which you are supposed to shift from 33rpm to 45rpm and, and parts where you have to switch back to 33rpm. It still sounds good when played in its entirety on 33rpm, which is what you're hearing here, and on the CD and digital versions; but it's not supposed to be as sludgy as it sounds here. You're given audible cues of when it's time to switch speeds, and it's up to you to interpret them. I dont wanna spoil it by giving them away. This is a brilliant song, and I wish more bands would release long, listener interactive songs like this.

The song certainly gets more interesting as it goes on. At first I didn't really feel any emotion from this but after the mid-point it got allot of help from the monologues. This is pretty decent for a Rise band. I honestly didn't expect to be able to stay enticed in the music for 30 minutes, although the track does reuse allot of ideas throughout the song I don't really mind because I enjoyed listening to them. I don't think the orchestra part was needed, if anything that's the only place this song goes wrong for me.

As a raised Christian from birth it is hard to hear TAS' message. At the same time, i love their music. God forgive me. Sometimes death is better.

This track has been my sole companion for weeks. Longing to be buried in a nameless grave. I tried to let go. I did. Only to be found by the police, dogs, helicopters… unfair! Loss, grief. Despair. Terror. Companions. This is an epic track. If I had had my own way this would have been the last thing I had heard. Finally something worth listening to.

The structure (obviously not the content or the sound, obviously) of this reminds me a lot of Natasha by Pig Destroyer.

I personally love Coma Witch, this song is the one song that puts the lasting impression on the whole album. Basically it is about someone trying to kill themself with carbon dioxide poisoning by looking themself in a running car in a garage. Someone breaks the window, this is like a modern day Shakespearean masterpiece honestly. Just the tragedy and sorrow, but there is a deep lesson to be learned in this song, it is just up to the individual to decipher what that lesson may be.

"You look in their eyes, even in a picture, doesn't matter if they're dead or alive, you can still read 'em. You know what you see? They welcomed it... Not at first, but... right there in the last instant. It's an unmistakable relief. See, cause they were afraid, and now they saw for the very first time how easy it was to just... let go. Yeah, they saw, in that last nanosecond, they saw... what they were. You, yourself, this whole big drama, it was never more than a jerry-rig of presumption and dumb will, and you could just let go. To finally know that you didn't have to hold on so tight. To realize that all your life - you know, all your love, all your hate, all your memories, all your pain - it was all the same thing. It was all the same dream, a dream that you had inside a locked room, a dream about being a person. And like a lot of dreams, there's a monster at the end of it." "Remember the old days? How everything used to be? We used to be so happy. I miss that. I miss us.. How "WE" used to be. You and I used to smile so much..... Look at all that water. I love the ocean. It just reminds me of all the wonderful times we used to have here. The sounds, and the sights and the snow. It just makes me so happy. All of those memories and feelings help me miss. And hope that maybe everything will be like they used to be. Gives me a reason to wake up in the morning. I don't dream anymore. I know a lot of people say that but I really don't... It's hard to dream when everything you used to dream about is a nightmare. I don't know... I'm sorry. Sometimes I steal glances at you when you're sleeping. You always look the same while you're asleep. It's like reliving an old memory, so calm, so peaceful.. almost happy. It reminds me of the old you. The one I thought I knew before all this. I'm not a stranger to these feelings - Loneliness, emptiness, anger, but I thought we worked through them. I thought we defeated them together. Instead they stand in defiance in the back of my mind. Slowly inching their way forward again. When is it going to stop? Tell me. Please tell me. Say you'll make it better again. I miss the way it was. The way things were. I would rather die than know that I will never relive those moments again.. because this isn't living.. this isn't anything at all... I would rather die..." Thank you Vincent & The Acacia Strain!
