Sunak says:
To all the Conservatives candidates and campaigners who worked tirelessly but without success, I am sorry we could not deliver what your efforts deserved.
It pains me to think how many good colleagues who contributed so much totheir community and their country will now no longer sit in the House of Commons.
Following this result, I will step down as party leader, not immediately, but once the formal arrangements for selecting my successor are in place.
“I will shortly be seeing his majesty the king to offer my resignation,” said outgoing PM Rishi Sunak. “I will step down as party leader, not immediately.”
“Starmer is a decent public spirited man who I respect,” Sunak added.

I wish Mr Sunak and his family well. His choice is clearly to go forward with grace, and that seems best for himself, at this stage, and a smooth hand over of power is surely best for the country. I have not agreed with some of his major decisions but note that this change seems to have brought back a zest perhaps weighed down dealing with the events of the last few years. The Labour Party has supported some of his decisions, so we will have to see how this plays out. All democracies need effective opposition, so hopefully that will be built up. One thing we can all celebrate is something that should not matter but does, put simply we have shown that the UK has broken the senior white guy mold. We have had a female PM and celebrated ethnic diversity in Politics,a work in progress in every country. The financial constraints remain the same, the answers to global issues have felt rather too aligned between the outgoing govt and former opposition. And the need to modernize our electoral system must be agreed. Will things be really different, or better? Time will tell. A hinted at bonfire of planning regs is worrying as it has to protect the public. An overhaul of Britain's regulation of water quality is one for the urgent intray. Everyone living person should have unhampered access to safe drinking water as a birthright, Mr Starmer. Best wishes to the Sunak family as we all go forward.
