His supporters have called his background "humble" and "modest".
(Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)
From the start of the Conservative leadership campaign, Rishi Sunak has sought to downplay his vast wealth and privilege to tell a story of middle class aspiration, seeking to demonstrate he understands the financial challenge faced by ordinary citizens.
But tonight an investigation for this programme has uncovered new details about Mr Sunak's education, property and financial dealings - and raises new questions about whether his hedge fund paid him with assets in offshore tax havens.

It’s not about being jealous or angry about someone’s wealth, it’s about recognising that someone in that lifestyle, who has always lived in that lifestyle, will never understand what life is like for the overwhelming majority of British people who don’t live anything remotely like that, the single mums, the disabled, people on council estates and those who will never be able to afford a property or have to choose whether they can afford to have children!

The problem isn't whether or not these special tax arrangements are legal or illegal. The problem is that the ones who write the law are the ones benefiting from the loopholes. Of course all the juiciest loopholes are legal. They've been written that way.

I don't think that money brings happiness to someone who has never had any problems with money. The next best thing that makes one happy is power/control. Having power over a loophole means having power over people who use the loophole, which is more important than any money that the loophole can bring. So to your point, yes, they do benefit from loopholes, but not in a monetary way.

The term privileged is ultimately subjective and broad. Everything can be a privilege. Being raised by two parents can also be regarded ss privilege. "We believe in aspiration in the Conservative Party." No you don't. Social mobility is plummeting, meaning that, if you are born poor today, you are more likely to die poor than at any time since the 1920s. Achievement is still dominated by accident of birth: who your parents are and which community you were born into. Half of all prime ministers of Britain attended the same school! The British class system is stronger now than at any time since the second World War, which is because the country is becoming evermore unequal again.

I can’t help feeling like it’s Rishi’s PARENTS who are the meritocratic success story here, and Rishi’s trying to pass off himself as having the same humble beginnings they did. I don’t know many middle-income families that have an extra £22k per year for Winchester fees. That is some people’s annual salary after tax. The average middle income family would struggle to cover the fees of the private school Rishi was already attending, let alone Winchester. Of course It’s not a crime to be rich, it’s the pretences that irritate his fellow MPs and the public. Matthew Stuart writes about this ‘cosplaying poor’ mindset of sorts in _‘The 9.9 percent: the new aristocracy’._ He details how well-off professionals of the 9.9%, whose necks tire from looking up at those with even more, _“convince themselves that they don’t have any privilege at all [..] and conflate the stress of status competition with the stress of survival.”💬_ Did anybody here watch Gossip Girl? The Upper East Siders made the Humphrey’s feel so poor that they actually started believing it. Nevermind that their elite education was paid by their former rockstar dad who ran a successful art gallery, while they lived in a multi-million dollar loft in Brooklyn’s nouveau-riche hipster hangout, D.U.M.B.O, not to mention their Dad eventually marrying a billionaire - but they’re poor, remember? 😂 Dan Humphrey’s character was constantly called out for ‘cosplaying poor’ whilst living alongside billionaires and marrying into Manhattan’s most elite family. I was due to attend private school under a full scholarship even though I came from a council estate, because I aced the entrance exam. They are so heavily invested in the current economic state of affairs, have so much potentially to lose - that they will never support any change that might redistribute vital wealth. Rishi is not only married into a mega-rich family, but he's worked for Hedge Funds and been involved with financial and economic elites throughout his entire career. The British people aren't all idiots. They want to know why on earth they should ever believe Rishi will work for anyone else, instead of his elite, establishment friends who are begging him to stay the course.

200k minus tax, NI and expenses. You over estimate their income greatly. Back in the 80's just arriving as immigrants for a long time they should not have had that much money, the pay was far lower back then compared to pay today they will still not earn anywhere near 200k. Today a doctor in specialist training starts on a basic salary of £39,467 and progresses to £53,077. Salaried general practitioners (GPs) earn £62,268 to £93,965 depending on the length of service and experience, if you are a lawyer I would think attention to detail are important. I would suggest that there was family wealth back in India. They also had 2 other kids to support, all looks a bit dodgy to me.

I love how they keep telling us that they've done nothing illegal when it comes to offshore tax havens. No, it isn't illegal because the financial elite have had the laws changed to suit themselves. If you look into what it takes to set up an offshore account its incredibly difficult, there are companies upon companies, mostly holding companies that don't actually employ anyone, but are there just to hold money. The whole process is very difficult and very expensive. Their entire purpose is to avoid paying tax and the premise is actually simple. As there is no tax on debt, someone from the UK with an offshore account, when needing money, contacts the offshore account company and gets a 'loan'. Of course it's not actually a loan because it's their own money. But because it's recognised as a loan when it comes to the UK, and therefore debt, there is no tax applied. The entire reason for having an offshore account is too evade paying tax, they have no other purpose. One of the real reasons the UK was sold the idea of Brexit was for that reason, the EU were closing tax loopholes such as tax avoidance or evasion from offshore accounts. Not the lie about regaining our sovereignty, we never lost our sovereignty so how could we regain it?

Phase One: Don't be dirt poor, have two parents (who stay together) who are middle classed professionals, ensure you live in an economy where social mobility is possible, and in which one can simultaneously afford to buy a private education and afford a home, food & transport. Phase Two: Go to Oxford, then marry a billionaire's daughter. Phase Three: Buy investment properties (because your mum & dad can afford to lend you £100,000) manage hedge funds, & then become Prime Minister of the 5th or 6th wealthiest countries in the world. Rishi is just the icing on the cake to already demoralised common people of Britain. He's just a pawn used to confuse and distract the public from uniting under one culture. We need a strong central culture to unite each nation under. Multiculturalism dilutes this and causes tensions in our way of life. Once again the people get divided and the top of the pyramid finds a way to maintain their hegemony. Rishi was lucky and worked hard to get to where he is. His parents worked very hard to send him to Winchester. That means they had to sacrifice nice things to send him there. But Rishi then made use of it to get into Oxford and then MBA Stanford. He then did the banking thing like many others of his generation. The biggest step up was he married into immense wealth. So he has gone from middle class to very rich with luck, help from hard working parents and made use of everything around him.
