I can understand why some people are anxious about change. But no one's going be forcing us to immediately buy a new electric car in 2030. I, like many other people will have to make do, as I have done all my life, with second hand cars for quite some time after 2030 (though I'd rather go electric now if I could). However, even now, more and more companies are introducing tax free electric car schemes and other green incentives, and with a combination of careful investment and fully costed policy, I believe the 2030 target is scalable and completely achievable. Unfortunately, all Sunak is doing is to kick the inevitable and unavoidable can down the road whilst delaying vital investment in new UK green economy business. I can't help but to think this is all down to pressure from the Tufton street sect if I'm honest.
@DigiDriftZone Жыл бұрын
It's more the fact the grid can't sustain more than about 10% of cars being EVs, in most places we need to rip our existing infrastructure and replace it with out at least 4x the size. This isn't going to happen for several decades. We can't even get good internet to Plymouth or complete HS2. Who are we kidding? - we can't quadruple our entire grid by 2035. Beyond that, the world can't refine enough lithium to replace more than about 10% of cars by 2035, it will take 30 years to ramp up production by any meaningful number. It's also important to remember that despite heavy subsidies and incentives the past 10 years, we've managed to transition just 3% of cars to EVs, that's basically a pointless exercise. The incentives for buying an EV are going away in 2 years, so we will see this already snail pace adoption slow or stop. The 2035 ban will likely become a 2050 ban and then the net zero agenda will likely be scrapped. It's for the best as China produced more emissions during COVID no less than we did in total since the industrial revolution. There's no reason bankrupting the country if it will have no effect on climate change. Our future is sea walls and adapting. It is sad, but I believe it is the right decision.

@@DigiDriftZoneyour numbers are way off. Already last year UK new cars sales were 16.6% BEV and 6% PHEV. The 2035 date is for all new cars to be BEV not all cars. It's perfectly doable. The National Grid has said that EVs won't be a problem. I've done my own calculations and just the drop in grid electricity usage in the UK over the last 20 or so years since it peaked is enough to power 80% of the car fleet. And that's before you factor in that EVs will be mostly charged in off peak hours in which case they don't add anything to peak electricity demand which is the limiting bottle neck. It's only fast charging during peak hours for people making very long journeys which is problematic. That can be mitigated by installing static batteries at charging stations so that the battery charges slowly in off peak then dumps the charge into your car at high speed so you don't have to wait long. The idea we have to quadruple generation to run EVs is just nonsense.

Ah, politicians! The masters of the art of "clarity." When they say something, they mean... well, probably something entirely different. They don’t make promises; they “suggest potential possibilities” - it’s like magic, but with words! And responsibility? Oh, that's for other people. A politician would never be caught making an error; it's just that circumstances changed, or perhaps we all misinterpreted their very clear statement.
