I've been trying to do this kind of detox for almost a year now and I have 4 personal tips that I've learned from my experience. I'm writing them here in case some of them are helpful, sorry if this comment is too long lmao (disclaimer: English is not my first language) ❤️ -Instead of shutting down your phone completely, try deleting the most distracting apps. I think nowadays phones are just necessary, so living without a phone is not realistic. And I don't think texting my friends is harmful so I want to keep that. What is harmful to me is spending hours mindlessly consuming stuff on twitter, KZbin, tiktok, etc. Stuff that doesn't really makes me happier, stuff that just fogs my brain, stuff that I will forget before I go to sleep. By doing that I just create empty and meaningless days that I won't remember. That's why I want to keep my phone and use it every once in a while for things that I genuinely enjoy. And if one day I want to use twitter, I download the app, use for a while and immediately delete it afterwards. This process of having to download and log in the app everytime I want to use it made me go from being on twitter 24/7 to use it just a couple of hours a week, or don't even use it for months. -By deleting those apps, now you have a lot of time that's waiting to be filled with other activities. So plan ahead, make lists of things that you genuinely enjoy doing and commit to choosing one of those options everytime you feel desperate and want to go back to your phone addiction. If you don't have anything in mind to substitute your phone, you will end up using it again. -Realise how great it is to just do nothing and *think about nothing* . It took me some time until I noticed the peace I felt when my brain is just existing, chilling without any external intrusion or stimuli. Obviously you think about many things through the day, but there are also times of nothingness, just peace. And honestly it feels like my brain needs those, the same way that our muscles can't be active all the time. For me, embracing the emptiness, the silence, helped me heal my anxiety. We are constantly bombarded with external stimuli and our brain needs to just *be* and do *nothing* every once in a while. And when you detox from your phone you get a lot more of "empty time" that allows your brain to just stop grinding for a minute. It happens unconsciously and it's honestly great. An example of this is: instead of mindlessly checking twitter when I'm waiting for the bus, I just "zoom out" and allow myself to exist without pushing my brain to constantly process external information -Realise that you are not actually missing out anything of true importance. Your brain won't even remember most of the things you watch/read on social media. And also you don't need to be constantly updated about every single thing that happens. That's just exhausting for your brain. You can check social media just a couple of times a week and you won't miss much anyways. Your addiction makes you feel as if you needed to absorb all that new information but in reality you are not missing anything

I had to leave my phone with my fiance while I was going to work for several weeks. He didn't have a phone because we had been laid off for 3 months and couldn't afford his phone bill and so he needed my phone to stay in contact with our hiring agent. Those few weeks I was more productive than I've been in a couple years... I was taking my journal and a book and reading and writing during all of my breaks and I was actually so proud of myself! Now that I have my phone back I'm definitely addicted to KZbin again... 🤦‍♀️

Props to you for actually completing the 24 hour goal! Have you considered doing an easier version of the week detox? Going a whole week without a phone is pointless imo, especially because it does have functional uses. BUT if you wanted to try a "detox lite" version of the week long one, you could delete/hide (or put on parental controls/screen time and not know the password) apps that aren't like texting and phone calls. And then, say, get 1-2 hours a day for phone use. That way you can still communicate with others if you need to, but there's nothing fun left on your phone. I dunno if you're interested in this, but I did it and it really helped. After my week was up, I just tweaked the rules a bit to be more friendly for long term use. My usage dropped from 12+ hours a day to averaging 1-3 hours a day... which is usually mostly from reading on my phone.

I used to be just as bad, I am also in college and I was starting to realize being addicted to my phone really deterred my productivity, and would even cause me to not pay attention when my friends were around. I slowly started leaving my phone on the counter or like on my bed and I was like okay with it not being ON my person. But VERY slowly! Let yourself be on your phone during this process. Start with 5 minutes of it not being on you, then 15. And then as time gets longer you’ll find things you like to do in replacement of phone time!! Don’t beat yourself up for being on the phone especially. The last thing I did to make it even better was a social media cleanse. I realize you’re a creator so it’s not easy to do that, but starting with breaks from ones you don’t use as much is a lot easier. LAST TIP I PROMISE: go to your clock app and go to the bedtime section and choose for your phone to go onto do not disturb around a later pm time like 8. You can still get on your phone, but it won’t be AS distracting with notifications! I like using that late night time for homework or reading. I’M SORRY I’M SO BORING BUT I HOPE THIS HELPS ! OR AT LEAST HELPS SOMEONE WHO’S READING ! YOU ARE SPECIAL AND LOVED IF YOU’RE READING THIS!! Thank u for getting this far 😊

if it makes you feel better, for all of college i read maybe 3-4 books TOTAL after spending a childhood reading 1-2 books a week. college had so much reading that i got fatigued really quickly.. but then a year or two out I started reading again and finding it to be a really great retreat, it just took a while to find enjoyment out of it! but it's definitely not a character flaw to not find fulfillment from books for a period of time.

I did this once last year for the same reason as you did but I did it for a week instead. During the ~detox I felt like I have so much time on my hands, it was a very (for a lack of a better word) interesting experience. I used my phone significantly less after the detox week and I felt so sick and bored of my phone I would not go on it for months. Maybe the next time you give it a try, do it for at least 3 days? Cheers xx

You seem like the kind of person that reads like..kpop fan fiction or something obscure like that. I love that! 😂 I’m essentially saying ‘do you read fanfic at all?’

i am. so addicted to technology too and this video just remidned me of that i- the app i latch onto most is instagram,, i just sit there and scroll for like 3 hours stragiht and then i get up and the worlds a blur, wtf where did the past 3 hours ago (same with youtube). one thign that really helped me tho was that i completely turned off all notifications apart from messages (where only my parents contact me) so im not always distracted by other apps, it rly reduced my screen time and my friends just learn to deal with me being a late replier, lol

YESSSS thIS IS MEEEE I average 8 hours at the least per day and then I did a complete electronic detox one Sunday and I read a massive chapter book in almost one sitting. I lament not being able to read for hours and hours anymore and I loved the detox because I DID ITTTTT.

this is so relatable, I have to delete insta, twitter and tumblr from my phone when I have to write an essay or study for an exam because otherwise it just won't happen
