when I was a wee kid in the UK decades ago and watching this series aged 8 or 9, I used to worry that when I left home I'd have to move into a lodging house like this! It terrified me. I thought Rising Damp was my inevitable future. Thankfully it wasn't! I always managed to have a flat of my own. What a relief!

I'm loving watching Rising damp, I'm old enough to remember when it was on originally but never really watched it, I didn't realise how good it was, I look forward to the next episode.

Two things to remember about Rigsby's racism, first it is a self defence reflex when faced with someone deepdown he believes is better than him. Philip is more intelligent, more articulate, more attractive than he, he needs to take him down. You will find he behaves in the same way with other characters who intimidate him, he only has two approaches to such people, attempting to ingratiate himself with them, then when that doesn't work, mockery using whatever characteristic at hand, with Philip it is race with others to will be their social class, morality or their sexuality. The other thing is that he has very little actual experience of black people to base his views on, I don't think he ever refers to any other non white person that he might have known. And this would be the normal experience of a working class white person from a northern town. Rigsby would have grown up in the 20s and 30s, when black people were rarely seen in the UK, outside of ports. Indeed even by 1974, when this was made, immigration from the Caribbean had only been going on for 25 years. Rigsby only source of information would have been old stores from his childhood.

Yes, you’re reading to deep into things. Just because Philip gives her a kiss on the cheek doesn’t mean he’s romantically interested in her. He’s being nice, making her feel better, being a friend.

One of the genius things is how well Rossiter played Rigsby. He clearly believes all sort of ridiculous stereotypes, but at the same time, he clearly looks up to and admires Phillip. I never knew what Phillip was doing there. While I don’t think he was actually the son of a chief, he is clearly pretty well off and sophisticated, so ought to have been able to afford something better

Philip can't turn off the charm. It's not that he is attracted to Ruth, he just likes pleasing people, he wants her to feel good, and he knows she wants his attention, so he he gives her a little. Of course that leads to trouble, as however much she realises that he doesn't really have feelings for her, she can't help hoping.

If you get a chance check out a TV series called Porridge starring Ronnie Barker and Richard Beckinsale who is also in this and is also the father of Kate Beckinsale. Ronnie Barkers jokes are so well delivered and the whole cast is excellent.

Great to see someone of your generation appreciating that not everything is negatively ‘racist’ and that we should be able to laugh and joke with positive humour and banter about our physical (and otherwise) differences. With people like you, there is hope for the future. With those screaming “racism” at every opportunity, there can only misery and suspicion in store. 👍🏻

I always enjoy your videos, you crack me up when you're in stitches because of the "dark humour "🤦‍♂ i think a lot of people back then didn't realize that they were actually poking fun at Rigsby for his bigoted views.
