It's always nice to see a composer join in on one of these reaction streams, and it was incredibly gracious of Chris to stick around and answer questions. Dan's interview with Chris on his podcast channel should also be very nice.
@thend44272 жыл бұрын
Does that change your image of him?
@Rubberman2022 жыл бұрын
@@thend4427 The jury is still out on that, I'm afraid. I'm not a huge fan of his stance of covers of his music, even if he's within his legal right doing so, and his advice to "stop listening and start reading" for would-be composers still rubs me the wrong way, to say nothing of the imaginary person he made up just to avoid answering what DAW he uses. Even if it is just his sarcasm at play, I don't much care for it.

@@Rubberman202 context? What exactly happened?
@Rubberman2022 жыл бұрын
@@plasmodius9449 What I just described is on his FAQ page on his website, on it he says covers of his music are fine, but that the cover artist is not allowed to monetize said cover at all, and that they're "legally obligated to be creative". He also wastes 5 questions dodging actually answering what DAW he uses and in general comes off like a smartass about the whole thing, when most other composers would just freely say what DAW they use. I'm told he's just a sarcastic guy, but this, coupled with him telling inspiring composers to "stop listening and start reading" create this image of him being somewhat pretentious and condescending, which clearly isn't the case given how he behaved in this stream's chat or in Dan's interview with him. Still, the fact that this is how he presents himself on his own website just leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
@cataclystp2 жыл бұрын
@@Rubberman202 I lost a lot of respect for him after seeing that a month or two ago. he also had a comment on one his videos where someone asked how many songs he abondons/throws away and he gave a smartass response like "none, composers who act as professionals don't throw songs away". really get the sense that the acclaim of the ost and game really got to his head. incredible musician and composer, awful attitudes.

This was a great showing of this type of format. Excellent music, excellent commentary, excellent advice, and the composer's here too. Risk of Rain 2 is one of my personal favorites so this was awesome to see. Personal pipe dream is seeing someone break down the soundtrack of The Dog Island like this. It's an ost comprised almost entirely of music with an acoustic guitar lead, so it puts time into exploring the different ways the same lead instrument can express different emotions depending on technique and accompanying instrumentation. It's really got some stand out compositions that most people have never heard before.

I'm surprised no one caught that those instruments in A Boat Made From a Sheet of Newspaper and The Face of The Deep were talkboxes, not really guitars or synths. A talkbox essentially takes the sound of an instrument, usually a synth, and then runs the sound through a tube into your mouth where the musician can shape and contour the sound in the same way we can with the sounds that come from our vocal chords, essentially mimicking human speech. You can't really make consonant sounds and mostly have to stick to vowel sounds because consonants are created by manipulating forced air out of our lungs to interact with our mouth in specific ways rather than manipulating and contouring sound created by our vocal chords and also because it's hard to make consonants with a tube in your mouth, but the musician can still mouth words like "yeah" to make the instrument "say" them. The talkbox is technically an effect that manipulates the existing sound of an instrument but the sound of the talkbox is so distinct that it is usually referred to on its own and sometimes as its own instrument.
@cryptcarts2 жыл бұрын

Always loved the little sprinkle of the Prelude right at the end of Who Can Fathom the Soundless Depths. The other two RoR albums are already consistent (and phenomenal) experiences to listen to with how many motifs are shared amongst the songs within them, but the little reprise really sells this album being its own experience even when entirely removed from the game. Of course, I always end up listening to all three back to back anyways, but its the thought that counts.

I feel compelled to suggest the Rain World OST as a step after Risk of Rain, though I'm not quite sure whether that makes sense to anyone except me; maybe I just want more spotlight on Rain World's music. Rain World's OST sometimes does not sound the way it does in-game due to the way threat music works, but it still feels atmospheric and bizarre just like the game itself. A lot of Rain World doesn't have music either, it's designed to sound and feel very immersive, so the music just kicks in either in set locations or to indicate when you're in danger, which is _a lot._

When it comes to other game suggestions, like for calamity or undertale I'm kinda like 'eh...' because it's a huge time commitment and doesn't have much to do with music other than containing it, but I think playing one of 7th beat games' games could be fun. Their two rhythm games both involve just pressing one button to a beat, and both take their respective concepts in interesting places (in my opinion). Their two games are 'A Dance of Fire and Ice' and 'Rhythm Doctor'.

Why even have a second number in a time signature? You can always normalize it anyways. Can't it just be a single number plus a bpm?
@DankLonk19802 жыл бұрын
A time signature itself is a fraction, 4/4 means it's divided into quarter notes and there will be a total of four quarter notes within that measure (the notes aren't strictly quarter notes but they all add up to those 4 quarter notes) so when we go into something like 3/4, it's saying the measure is a total of 3 quarter notes. Things can get more complicated and you can divide things into 8th notes and have things like 6/8 where there are 6 eight notes per measure. Or you can have it in 5/4 where there are 5 quarter notes per measure
@Bliss4672 жыл бұрын
@@DankLonk1980 yeah I'm aware of that but 6/8 can just be 6 with half the bpm of 6/4.
@DankLonk19802 жыл бұрын
@@Bliss467 that's not how that works. 6/8 would be closer to 3/4 and 6/4 would be already be half the speed of 6/8 and the songs division of measures would be very thrown off. Yes they are both in 6, but they are in a different 6. I understand what you are trying to achieve by changing the bpm, but it wouldn't work out. On top of it, songs with lower bpms are slower, a whole note is longer than a quarter note, a quarter note is longer than an eighth, etc that's why 6/8 would not transfer to 6/4, 3/4 is closer because 6 eight notes make up 3 quarter notes, however you play two of those eight notes instead of one of those quarter notes
