My dad owned a drilling company. One time he got hired to drill a water well for a guy on black mountain in Colorado. He took my mom, my older brother and me in the camper truck to stay with him on the drill site until the well was finished. One day my brother and I took off walking into the woods and walked for about an hour until we found some old faint two track road heading into a small canyon. At the end of the canyon was a cliff face with a mine dug into it. Alongside the trail leading to the mine and on both sides of the trail were houses. Old and filled about a quarter of the way up the walls with dirt and some with the roofs caved partially in. 4 houses on each side. In each house was all the stuff these people left behind but it was strange. There were old bones on the metal plates on the tables. Cups sitting out. Clothes on hangers. It was like they all just up and left suddenly without taking anything with them. There were even guns laying about here and there and ammunition boxes on the shelves. In one house we found dentist tools and bottles with various kinds of powder on the shelves. I being just 10 years old and having a good sized bottle collection at home was stoked about the bottles and so I gathered them all up and my brother took the guns and some old cash and coins in an open safe that was half buried in another house. When we got back to camp my dad confiscated the guns and money but I was allowed to keep the bottles. In one bottle was some white powder. I tasted it and instantly my tongue went numb. My brother tried it too and quickly sniffed the entire bottle up his nose which I didn’t understand but I thought was funny. He said his whole face was numb and then he disappeared for two days. We searched and searched and finally he came back home. My parents were mad as hell. Later he told me it was cocaine in that bottle. I didn’t know what that was but now I do. My 12 year old brother snorted about 3 grams of coke and went on a run to get the shakes to go away and got lost. We never went back to that place but I’ve always wondered why those people left all their stuff and just left.

Wow. What an adventure. Thanks for sharing
@jaidamoon299325 күн бұрын
Oh my goodness!!! What a trip that musta been. Esp when you learned what the powder was. Your brother is quite lucky. A ton of different substances were white powders in history. Could’ve been anything - arsenic or morphine. Also, it was likely a purity that no one can get anymore so he’s very very lucky. Obviously he knew what it was (how it’s identified by the numbness) soooooo …..lol.😅😅 it must’ve been a fun trip.

From someone who has had the misery of getting to use one of those. It’s called a horse drawn slip. The two wooden handles are to dump the bucket over as it gathers the dirt and you need to empty it. It is only possible with a very good horse. My grandfather actually used one of those to dig a basement for their house.

Loved the views! Another interesting video and explore! I'd think 9,000 feet would be about average for a mine in Colorado, but the snow comes earlier and stays longer in Montana. It would be interesting to find out if they spent the winter there? I tend to think they did based on the spoil pile. The period of time without snow would have been kind of short! The basement to my house and some of the surrounding houses were dug with a horse and slip scoop. My uncles dug the pond at the family homestead with a horse drawn plow and slip scoop.
