I recall reading somewhere that the purpose behind 2 or 3 seat outhouses was actually not so everyone used the facilities together. It was so you rotated the seats, so the buildup wasn't concentrated in one spot. Kinda makes sense.

That's exactly right. No one wants to do their business with someone sitting right there next to them. But a 3 holer will last 3 times as long as a one holer before needing to be moved.

Fascinating place. Never seen such swarms of Horse Flies. Darned things take a pound of flesh per bite. Where I lived in NY, it was Black Flies in the Spring, and Deer Flies in the Summer. Horse Flies were kind of rare, but they sure could give you a nasty bite. Here in our part of West Virginia, its the Mozzies that are the most annoying. I haven't seen more than a few Horse Flies in all the years we've been here. Thanks for taking us on your adventure, sans the flies!

What a find, this place is. The three of you certainly earned your adventures' stripes, with those horrible pests attacking you... as well as what you endured, nosewise... They did seem to have an abundance of outhouses, and facilities. This was a very interesting place, Andrea and Steven.

Hi Steve and Andrea, interesting video. I am always intrigued to see 2 and 3 seater loos. Was using the facilities a social activity in some circles? It certainly was for ancient Romans. I remember seeing about a 10 seater at a Roman vills in Sicily.

Neat find and adventure! Maybe not as suitable for lunchtime viewing as other videos! lol I don't know, but I've found the clouds of black flies and mosquitos far worse than horse flies ... especially with your pants down around your ankles! Just an fyi ... the well pump there is a deep well type and is located inside the well casing. The blue-green tank is a pressure tank. It has an air filled rubberized bladder inside that compresses when filled with water. It allows you to have water pressure without the well pump kicking on every time you turn on the tap. I thought Andrea was going to do a little time traveling towards the end of the video with those special effects!
@PinInTheAtlas3 ай бұрын
@@normstephens8354 ah ha. You liked the special effects then Norm? Thanks for all that info. And yes those bloody flies. I was calling them horse flies but they may be the black flies. Either way they attacked and hurt 😞

@@PinInTheAtlas Yes ... I liked the special effects! Blackflies are small like a knat and may be called noseeums. The horse flies are big. Both draw blood with their bites.

@@PinInTheAtlas I worry about that, too. Hantavirus is mainly spread to humans through breathing in air contaminated with rodent urine or droppings which have been disturbed by wind or walking through a rat nesting area. Disinfecting afterword is a good idea but it’s more important to avoid disturbing or even walking near those areas where you see rat droppings. Gotta stay safe so we can enjoy lots more of your adventures in the future :-).
