Hello Doctor, I was prescribed Finasteride (1mg) by my dermatologist almost a week ago, but I was quickly discouraged from taking it once I looked up more information on the drug. I'm thinking of giving the pill a try, but I am wondering if it is safe for an 18 year old male to take it ?(I'm almost 19). I'm sorry to report that my dermatologist didn't really go over many of the side effects, or if it was safe. She just told me that her patients had seen a lot of success when taking it.
@AmiyaPrasadMD5 жыл бұрын
Hi edward bibriesca, The risk of side effects from finasteride are pretty rare at about 2% of patients. A DHT-blocker like finasteride is very important for someone your age who already has pattern hair loss, because your scalp is highly DHT-sensitive. In the 20 years I've prescribed finasteride, none of my patients had permanent side effects. I hope this clarifies things for you.

@@OneOther1 Sorry for the late reply. I've been taking it for a month now, and I don't have any if those side effects that people worry about. The only thing I'm seeing are red marks spreading all over my body (it kinda looks like chicken pocks). I'm not sure if I'm having some sort of reaction to the pill, or if it's some other factor. I wouldn't be too afraid to take the pill if I were you. I've talked to 3 doctors already about the pill, and they assured me the pill was safe. Statistically speaking, the amount of men experiencing sexual side effects are very low. There's a lower amount experiencing "permanent side effects". As the doctor mentions in the video, these cases are inconclusive. There's a large amount of men that are prescribed Finasteride daily. If it truly were a horrible drug, there would be a significant number of men complaining about it and the FDA would've looked into this by now. You can believe that their best interest is money, thus they continue to keep this "dangerous" pill on the market. That's just conspiracies at that point, keep that in mind.

Hey doctor, I have a very unique situation I’d like to get your opinion on. I brought it up with my doctor the other day but she didn’t have any opinion at all on it. Have you ever heard of a single patient who got complete loss of ED, complete loss of erections, and even numbness from a single dose of 1.1mg finasteride? Whether you have or not, what’s your opinion on this situation? Is genital numbness even supposed to be a side effect of the drug? I don’t see it listed anywhere.
@AmiyaPrasadMD7 ай бұрын
Hi @nothinggood000 , I have never heard of that happening, and my opinion is that it isn't even possible for it to happen. I hope this clarifies things for you.

Hi mister pinkman, You're correct that actual cases of side effects are very rare, and I have not seen long-term side effects in my patients after prescribing the drug for 25 years now. You're also right about the small minority being very vocal about it. Also, there are more common causes of erectile dysfunction which also affect men who are not on finasteride, including: stress, excessive alcohol intake, smoking, lack of sleep, lack of exercise, an unhealthy diet, and aging. Often, men on finasteride just blame the drug if they encounter problems, but don't take into account an unhealthy lifestyle. I hope this clarifies things for you.

@AmiyaPrasadMD5 жыл бұрын
Hi sshyguy85, Finasteride is meant to slow hair thinning, and I haven't seen it have a significant effect on thickening thinning hair. If you want to thicken thinning hair, and stimulate growth from dormant hair follicles, you can look at the Hair Regeneration treatment featured in this video and my other videos. You may want to try a different DHT-blocker like dutasteride, as high DHT-sensitivity is still an issue if you had pattern hair loss starting in your 20s or early 30s. While older patients with less DHT-sensitivity can have the Hair Regeneration treatment alone, I do prescribe a DHT-blocker in conjunction with the Hair Regeneration treatment to patients who start pattern hair loss at a younger age. I don't find low-level laser light therapy, or LLLT to be very effective. I did a video about it, for your reference: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pavVeqRtm7RjfK8

Hi @HorrorbleDriver, While there are supplements that claim to be a DHT-blocker like finasteride, supplements are not regulated like drugs with consistent dosages, and claims of blocking DHT are not completely verified. Treatments like PRP have a similar effect to minoxidil, but like minoxidil it needs to be repeated to be sustained. If you suggest, i can stop finasteride, like....I can only survive on minoxidil 5%. Thanks in advance.
@AmiyaPrasadMD3 жыл бұрын
Hi Sourabh Vaishnav, Finasteride is more beneficial than minoxidil as it can slow down and stabilize hair thinning, and it can be used long-term more predictably. Minoxidil won't thicken your hair, or stop hair loss, but it appears to delay the hair shedding cycle, and extends the hair growth cycle so you appear to have more hair on your head. You will have to use it daily to sustain these effects, but these effects can also decrease with time even if you use it daily. Since minoxidil delays the hair shedding cycle, and prolongs the hair growth cycle, if you stop using it, you will likely have a significant hair shed. I hope this clarifies things for you.

Hi Muhammad Shabir Dar, 1) Finasteride is a lifetime drug. Minoxidil is not as effective as finasteride, and the effects can wane with time. Finasteride treats pattern hair loss more directly, while minoxidil is a more of a cosmetic effect, and our TrichoStem Hair Regeneration patients stop minoxidil, but men with high DHT-sensitivity continue with finasteride. 2) DHT is present in the bloodstream, not just in the scalp, so a pill is more effective. 3) You need to have this reviewed by your prescribing doctor. @AmiyaPrasadMD6 жыл бұрын
Hi oribv1324, If you are suffering from pattern hair loss this early, you are highly DHT-sensitive, and will need to take a DHT-blocker even if you had the Hair Regeneration treatment. Patients with a later onset of hair loss, say in their 40s, are less DHT-sensitive, and can have the Hair Regeneration treatment alone without finasteride. Most patients have one treatment like all the ones shown in my videos, but a second booster treatment is included in the price. For a person like yourself with pattern hair loss this early, a DHT-blocker is a requirement for your treatment plan. We have patients coming from around the world every day for this treatment, and someone like you from another country found us, so we are certainly well known enough to keep us busy :)

@AmiyaPrasadMD2 жыл бұрын
Hi Casper Krause, You should not have a hair transplant under age 30. A hair transplant is more appropriate after age 30 for several reasons: 1) only 20% of men in the 20s experience hair loss, so men in their 20s keeping up with their peers with a lot of hair will expect more density from a hair transplant to match their peers with lots of hair 2) if you experience hair loss in your 20s, you have a very rapid progression of hair loss, so you are losing hair faster than it can be transplanted, also known as the treadmill effect 3) if you continue to have transplants in your 20s, you won't have any donor hair left in your 30s and beyond 4) the amount of hair density to match your peers lessens as you get older, as more men your age experience hair thinning and hair loss 5) if you continue to have hair transplants without stabilizing rapid hair loss in your 20s, you would have spent tens of thousands of dollars on multiple hair transplants, but won't have much hair in your 30s as your native hair does continue thin after a transplant alone, leaving only sparse transplant coverage. You can refer to this video about it - kzbin.info/www/bejne/aHjOdKxjaJWbfMk

Hi Dr, if finesteride is effective, and you stop taking after 9 - 12 months is it better to take cycles on and off to allow alpha 5 reductase production again for example 6 months to boost libido and normal hormone production for short term, than return to medication to preserve growth?
@AmiyaPrasadMD Жыл бұрын
Hi jagz888, First, you should be asking your prescribing doctor as finasteride is a prescription medication, so you shouldn't be taking it without a prescription. That said, finasteride should be taken continually to inhibit 5-alpha reductase to block DHT formation. The effects of finasteride on the libido are very rare. There are more common causes of erectile dysfunction which also affect men who are not on finasteride, including: stress, excessive alcohol intake, smoking, lack of sleep, lack of exercise, an unhealthy diet, and aging. Often, men on finasteride overlook their lifestyle choices if they encounter problems, but a healthier lifestyle needs to be considered as well. I hope this clarifies things for you.

@AmiyaPrasadMD7 жыл бұрын
Hi Eyüp Öner, I advise you have your scalp checked by a doctor to confirm your hair loss is genetic. Your doctor can also prescribe finasteride and minoxidil if needed. The two drugs work differently: finasteride blocks the conversion of testosterone to DHT, which is the hormone that causes hair to thin; minoxidil extends the hair growth cycle, and delays the hair shedding cycle so you have more hair on your head at a given time. You can actually benefit from using both, but see you doctor before you start on either medication. I hope this helps you

And sir ıf we have a genetical hair loss we have to use Finasteride our all life or how long? When we stop Finasteride our Hair loss come back?
@AmiyaPrasadMD7 жыл бұрын
Hi Eyüp Öner, Finasteride would have to be used at 1 full pill daily for life to be effective. If you stop taking it, your hair will soon revert back to its state before you started taking the pill, and your hair loss progression will continue. Finasteride can slow down hair thinning, but it won't stop it completely. If you do no want to continue taking finasteride your whole life, you can still consider the Hair Regeneration treatment. It is only needed once by most patients, and you can stop using finasteride and minoxidil after the treatment. The treatment lasts at least 5 years, but time will tell how long it really lasts. I hope this clarifies tings for you.

Hi Thufail Moozhikkal, Testosterone is generally more needed by adult men. DHT is still a form of testosterone, as it created by testosterone being converted to DHT by the enzyme 5-alpha reductase. Hi Jonathan Morrison, Finasteride is for progressive thinning of your native hair, which hair transplantation by itself does not treat at all. While donor hair from the permanent zone is genetically DHT-resistant, it is the hair surrounding your hair grafts that need treatment. When hair thins around hair grafts, you will be left with obvious looking hair plugs without further treatment. You can refer to this video about why treatment is still needed after a hair transplant for progressive hair thinning, but finasteride alone may not be enough - kzbin.info/www/bejne/qHrPemhre5lqbtk

Hi@@jonathanmorrison9439, Our TrichoStem Hair Regeneration treatment works better than growth factor concentrate in thickening thinning hair, but our treatment, as well as GFC, or PRP alone still don't block DHT-formation, so finasteride is still needed especially among younger males with high DHT-sensitivity. Hi Sagar Verma, Finasteride should not cause hair shedding. The primary effect of finasteride is to slow progressive hair thinning. Shed hair grows back, but male pattern hair loss happens when shed hair grows back thinner, and/or there is a delay in hair growing back. It is normal to shed 50-100 hairs a day. If it exceeds this rate, you can see your prescribing doctor to determine the causes of your hair shedding such as stress, but usually shedding is temporary, and no treatment is needed for it. I hope this clarifies things for you.

I did a video that features this question kzbin.info/www/bejne/a5CbkKCfnrSrgM0 Many international Hair Regeneration patients actually do get back on the plane home the same day as treatment, but I don't recommend this for everyone as it is dependent on general health condition and age. The tenderness after the Hair Regeneration treatment usually subsides in a day or two, and many patients don't experience the tenderness as bad at all. The face does not swell after Hair Regeneration treatment. I hope this clarifies things for you.

Thanks for the reply, :) Can the procedure be optionally carried out under intravenous sleep sedation or general anaesthetic, so that the patient will be fully asleep and will not notice the injections? Is the patient prescribed pain killer medication for a few days afterward or just advised to use ordinary over the counter pain killers from their pharmacy?
@AmiyaPrasadMD7 жыл бұрын
Hi Abc 123, The injection procedure does not need local anesthetic, but rather topical and injectable anesthetic. We do use local anesthetic with sedation for almost all our surgical procedures, but this is a non-surgical procedure. General anesthesia should be avoided whenever possible because it has its own set of risks that are increased when used, it increases recovery time, and the after effects are uncomfortable for the patient. The pain after the Hair Regeneration is minimal, so a pain reliever is not needed. You can use an over-the-counter pain reliever if you choose, but most patients don't need it. Tenderness of the scalp usually doesn't last more than 24 hours.

Hi ashim sarkar, Scalp DHT-sensitivity is likely the main reason why you are experiencing hair thinning, but you do need to see a doctor for a proper diagnosis, as well as a prescription for a DHT-blocker like finasteride. DHT is present significantly in the bloodstream of all males, but not all males have a scalp sensitivity to it. I hope this clarifies things for you.

Hi@@ashimsarkar8350, Finasteride is the most popular male pattern hair loss treatment in the world, so it may seem like a lot of people have had side effects. However, side effects are actually quite rare at 2% of patients. I advise you to not worry about the small chance of side effects before you take the drug as it's not likely you will have them. I hope this clarifies things for you.

Hi 17 yr-old, I usually prescribe finasteride at the minimum age of 18 as it is considered a drug for adult men. DHT does play an important role in male physical development, and finasteride is DHT-blocker, so you don't want to take this drug while your body is still in an important development stage. Hi Alenk Alby, If you have male pattern hair loss starting in your 20s or younger, you are likely highly DHT-sensitive, and need a DHT-blocker like finasteride to control it, and slow hair thinning.Risk of side effects of finasteride is about 2% in patients, so it’s very rare. You need to see a doctor to confirm male pattern hair loss, and write you a prescription for finasteride. I hope this clarifies things for you.

But i dont have any other issues..But the problem is im confused that is the side effects really happening biologically or it has just become a psychological issue( i was very concerned seeing videos and comments before taking finasteride).. What should i do now? Should i take hormonal test? I dont want to lose my libido forever🥲
@AmiyaPrasadMD9 ай бұрын
Hi @tanzidkarim9593, The vast majority of finasteride users do not experience ED. The small minority of men who think they are affected are vocal about it, making it seem like a bigger issue than it actually is, but they could have other causes of ED, not just solely finasteride. There are more common causes of ED which also affect men who are not on finasteride, including: stress, excessive alcohol intake, smoking, lack of sleep, lack of exercise, an unhealthy diet, and aging. Often, men on finasteride overlook their lifestyle choices if they encounter problems, but a healthier lifestyle needs to be considered as well. You can discuss possible testing for other issues with your prescribing doctor. I hope this helps you.

@AmiyaPrasadMD4 жыл бұрын
Hi Arijit Kumar Paul, That is not listed as a possible side effect of finasteride. The risk of other sexual side effects is extremely low at about 2% of men using finasteride. TrichoStem Hair Regeneration is not a finasteride replacement, although some older men with later onset of pattern hair loss and less acute DHT-sensitivity have had success without finasteride. We don't currently offer the treatment in India, but we do have many Indian patients coming to the US for treatment. Since it is a non-surgical treatment with little to no recovery time, and in many cases no additional treatment, you don't need an extended stay in the US. Many patients actually get back on the plane home the same day as treatment, but I don't recommend this for everyone as it is dependent on general health condition and age.Some patients with advanced hair loss may get a second treatment 15-24 months after the first, and results for international patients are monitored through Skype, Facetime, or email follow up.

@AmiyaPrasadMD7 жыл бұрын
Hi Halmat MBA, Shedding 50-100 hairs a day is normal as those hairs do grow back. Hair loss happens when shed hair grows back thinner with every growth cycle, and until it grows back very thin, then stops growing altogether. Finasteride will slow down hair thinning, but will not stop it completely. The Hair Regeneration treatment featured in the video can stop hair thinning, and reverse it so thinning hair grows back thicker. I hope this clarifies things for you.

Please help!! Can I just take Saw Plametto instead of finasteride!?!?! Also wants you stop taking finasteride doesnt all your hair fall out?
@AmiyaPrasadMD5 жыл бұрын
Hi robert jordan, Saw palmetto is a supplement, and not definitively proven as a DHT-blocker. Even if it is a proven DHT-blocker, since it's a supplement there are no regulations to ensure a consistent dosage of the active ingredients in each capsule. Being a drug, finasteride is regulated so 1mg is ensured in each tablet. Finasteride is a prescription medication, so you do need to see a doctor before taking it. Finasteride as a DHT-blocker slows progressive hair thinning due to pattern hair loss. Hair doesn't fall out and not grow again. Hair normally sheds, then grows back. Pattern hair loss is when shed hair grows back progressively thinner, and/or there is a delay in regrowth after shedding. I hope this clarifies things for you.

Hi, I have been on finpicia for more than a year and it didn't work for me I was still shedding and loosing hair. I then moved onto Avodart and it seem to stop the shedding for about 2 months and then it started shedding again. I'm on Avodart for about a year now and it is not working for me anymore. Im still loosing hair. Should I continue with it? I now have propicia and was wondering if I can use it with the Avodart alternating the dosage, one night propicia and one night Avodart. I have also had about 6 treatments of prp but still loosing hair. Can you please give me advice. I would really like to do your hair regeneration but unfortunately the USA is to far away from where I stay and the cost to fly there just for one treatment will just be to much.
@AmiyaPrasadMD5 жыл бұрын
Hi Daniel slabbert, Finasteride and dutasteride are both DHT-blockers, and both require a prescription. If you are DHT-sensitive your hair will gradually grow back thinner after it sheds, or there is a delay in growth after shedding. Pattern hair loss is not hair shedding, and these medications slow hair thinning, but don't treat hair shedding. You need confirmation for pattern hair loss with a proper diagnosis because you haven't mentioned hair thinning among your issues. It is normal to shed 50-100 hairs a day, and the hair grows back. Hair thinning is what happens when the shed hair grows back thinner. I hope this clarifies things for you.

@AmiyaPrasadMD3 жыл бұрын
Hi MK, Sorry, but I can't make a diagnosis based on your description alone, and would need to examine your scalp to confirm the cause of yourhair loss. Minoxidil delays normal hair shedding so you appear to have more hair, but if you stop using it, a sudden and severe shed normally occurs. Proper treatment, if needed, can be prescribed after a physical examination of your scalp. I hope this helps you.
