After years of being uncomfortable and chronically inflamed sinusses I underwent a septoplasty and turbinate correction last tuesday. The first night was horrible with the tampons in (my surgeon used operating gloves pushed in). So much easier to remove but still a bit painful! Also experienced a lot of palpitations the first 2 days after and felt so tired from the anesthesia for days after the surgery. Also it feels like my face is broken still after a week, medication offers some pain relief. Tampons were removed the day after the surgery and that was a huge relief. I have to cleanse/rinse the nose 3-5 times a day with salt water running it through each nostrill or you will have no air at all going through your nose. I am looking forward to being fully healed up. Definitely isn't a small surgery like some people think, they are still operating on your face. Best of luck everybody!

My surgeon told me most docs don't use packing anymore, he said he would probably put splints in. I can handle pain, but am terrified of not being able to breathe. I have Sjogrens which makes my mouth, nose and eyes are CRAZY dry 24/7. He says use my nasal irrigation machine every HOUR and I would be able to breathe through my nose, but I'm thinking very little. So how much air could you get through your nose after nasal irrigation?? Thanks for any input, I'm kinda in panic mode about post op...
@seanrobesyn7808
@seanrobesyn7808 2 жыл бұрын
@@RodStewartFan actually had a post op check-up today after 5 weeks. Everything is healing up quite nice but not yet all healed up surgeon said. There is 1 night that is horrible and it's the first night. When the splints/tampons are removed from your nose you will be able to breathe for sure. I have a Rhinohorn to rinse/cleanse the nose and still to this day use it. It is less agressive than blowing your nose. Rhinohorn is a gamechanger I have come to love it after hating it at first. Seriously... I have a lot more air now but still suffer from dry throat cuz I now take in almost too much air (surgeon said, cuz he made the nasal cavity really wide). Ah well glad I healed up nicely 😊 best of luck!

I had this surgery with turbinate reduction done 18 months ago here in the UK. I had NO pain after surgery. Some discomfort, but NO pain. You can't blow your nose for a week, and you won't be able to lie completely flat for about 4 weeks because you will feel everything pulling in your nose. I had no splints, and no packing (they don't use it here anymore) I had to wear a pad underneath my nose for about a week to mop up the goo. I was passing a lot of scabs through my nose for about a month (they don't warn you about this, and some are pretty big) but after 4 weeks it suddenly stopped and that was it. Even 18 months on, I still can't believe I can breathe so well through my nose. My sleep has improved, and the hayfever season was a LOT more tolerable. I wish I'd had this done 20 years ago, rather than waiting until my 40s. I have a low pain threshold and was amazed I was in no pain. I took zero painkillers after the operation as they were not needed. I could breathe through my nose pretty much straight away after surgery

Thank you for the video. One thing I learned that helped me. My nurse did the gauze under the nose to catch the blood, but instead of taping it to my face and having to change the gauze often, my nurse used a mask. The same masks we use for covid. It was perfect. Its holding the gauze in place and changing the gauze is so easy, and I don't have marks on my face from constantly replacing tape.

Hey me too! Septoplasty two days ago with NHS. They gave me hardly any advice and I have no follow up with them for 6 weeks. I have this packaging in nose and wondering when do they come out. Been told I douche 72 hrs after op but how will that work with the packaging within tbe nose? How are you now? Xx
@Yasmin9494
@Yasmin9494 Жыл бұрын
@@rodeo2009 the advice after was awful, they just assume everyone knows I think 🙄 bad you don’t have the follow up appointment booked as well - definitley contact the hospital when you feel able enough to do so! So I was told the most awful way of douching - having to tuck my head completely under myself so my nostrils were pointing at the sky, the syringe the water in my nose and hold it in there for a minute before turning my head upright again. I tried doing this and failed miserably.. I don’t know how anyone could do that!!! So I just filled my syringe up and pushed water into my nose whilst I looked in the mirror then had a tissue close by to hold under my nose to catch the water. It honestly seems like it does nothing but it helps!! My packing started falling it on day 7 and 8, little clumps at a time - then I was able to breathe but couldn’t smell or taste for another couple of days after that.
@Yasmin9494
@Yasmin9494 Жыл бұрын
@@rodeo2009 my best thing was Q tips or cotton buds.. I used so many a day, and I just carefully went around each nostril and it caught blood, junk etc that I couldn’t physically blow out of my nose. It helped when the packing was low enough to fall out but again, couldn’t blow my nose to move it! I would also recommend douching more often. I was told 5 times a day but I was sometimes doing it every hour - maybe because I didn’t do it the ‘proper’ way but I wasn’t going to torture myself upside down!😅 By day 7, 8 and 9 things really moved and that’s when I felt like life was getting back to normal. Didn’t need gauzes under my nose, the blood stopped, packing came out etc! I now feel incredible. I’m just over 4 weeks post op and I can completely breathe through my nose, I no longer snore, I can breathe whilst I eat, drink, brush my teeth etc where I haven’t been able to my whole life. I know it might not feel like it now but it works and it has completely changed my life!!! Hopefully within the next 4ish days you’ll start noticing changes 🤞🏼 All the best, I know how awful it is for the first week 😖 Good luck, and wishing you a speeding recovery!!

Watching this makes me so glad I got mine done in America! I had no pain when I woke up from anesthesia because they had given me fentanyl through my IV at some point. However, I was so nauseous for the rest of the day. The nurse immediately got me some ginger ale and a bag of pretzels, but it took me 4 hours to eat the snack sized bag. I’m on like 5 different medications: an opioid as needed, a steroid, an antibiotic, an anti-nausea, and some sort of nasal gel. I also have to rinse with saline spray & I’ve gotten myself some vasaline to cover my skin before putting on my bandage. My splints come out in two days and I’m a little nervous for that, but I’m excited to no longer have to wear the bandage 24/7 and to be able to breath out of my nose again! Thankfully, my bleeding mostly stopped around the 18 hour post op mark. I still have a little coming out, but it’s mostly snot.

Hi There, I was diagnosed with deviated septum over 20 years ago, I should have had the septoplasty operation then but, got scared at the last minute at the operating theatre and since then ( I did not take much notice at first), I found that I was struggling to sleep but now I cant sleep at all , now ended up on antidepressants, lost my good paid Engineering job. I feel all this happened as I should have had my operation back then. I do have a new appointment in just over months time for surgery but, again I am scared, especially that I am on antidepressants. Please can any one help to put my mind at rest.

Thanks for the informative video. I've just had a septoplasty in the NHS in Wales, UK, and my experience has been slightly different with dissolvable gel and stitches used instead of nasal tampons (is that the medical terminology?- made me giggle!). I also didn't have any stents. I'm currently on Day 5 of recovery and also didn't sleep great on the first night after the surgery, but have slept better since, and I am trying to rest as much as I can and self-isolate so that I don't pick up any infections that could ruin my recovery. All the best with your medical degree.

I just had this done yesterday as well as inferior turbinate reducation and left ear tube implant. This was my first surgery ever. I was absolutely frightened to the point of dry heaving and crying. All I remember was breathing the gas and waking up in recovery. I wasnt in pain and didn't have a headache like I was warned could be a possibility. However the guy next to me immediately started asking for pain meds. I think it all depends on your pain tolerance. I noticed right away that the pressure, headache and vertigo I'd been dealing with the last 6 mths was gone. The most aggravating part for me is the constant dry mouth and not being able to taste. I woke up every hour to drink and urinate. This is my 2nd day. Whats hurting for me is the turbinate incision because the gauze keeps rubbing it. Bleeding wasn't too bad. I changed the gauze about 3 times and irrigated with simple saline recommended by my ENT.

I had this done in my 20s & now in my 50s, I have to have this procedure done once again. Yes, he's right. The procedure itself isn't painful; however, post-op and the week following was uncomforable. Mouth breathing was hard because it dries out your mouth quickly. Drinking & eating was difficult. Inhaling & taking a breath before eating & drinking was always necessary. Prolonged chewing wasn't an option since breathing was a priority, and choking is always a possibility if you try to breathe with your mouth full of food. The most painful part of this procedure is the doctor pulling out the gauze from the insides of the nostril. Just imagine the crusted blood, snot & slime all melded with all your nose hairs & the doctor ripping all that out in a long strand. I still have tears just thinking about it. It basically looks like Kimchi when he pulled it out!

Im not sure if im using the right technique. but amt no pain just alot of drainage and spiting. I am just snorting and spiting . I hope this is normal. I sent a message to my doc to see if i can come in on Monday. If anyone has similar please let me know!

I just had surgery yesterday. From watching videos I saw that when rinsing you want to make a "K" sound so you block some of the pathways and "raise the palette", this way it won't go down your throat. As for me, I did my first rinse this morning and it did not go through the other side, some blood and very little mucus came out from the same side I was rinsing

I got mine done last week & I didn’t get splints I went to remove my packing yesterday & its not that bad its just weird having a long thin suction tube in there and it feels like ur going to sneeze well i did sneeze after the procedure was done but yes having the packing inside was the worst part cus ur congested and u get irritated/frustrated of having ur nose stuffed w the packing & mucus i lost weight because I didn’t really want to eat cus i could feel the congestion evey sip/swallow of food & then the blood it just didnt give me a good appetite but its worth it i didnt take any pain meds i didnt feel any pain at all only when I accidentally hit my nose w something so yeah during ur 1st week it feels long till they remove ur packing it makes it feel like the wait time was 10x shorter. Idk if u have or havent gotn it done yet but either way good luck 👍

My surgery was yesterday, and there was not much pain but had alot bleeding and it's normal to bleed after this surgery, today removed tampons and waiting to remove the wings inside, I just feel only clogged nose like flu symptoms, and sometimes get blood stain while spit saliva, Anastasia and surgery was completely fine, NO side effect, or other issue's, only while talking feel little difficult like you have cold and flu, God grace feeling better, As he said need to be hydrated as breathing is completely through mouth and it's keep dry, and u need to sleep facing up slightly head up, and not allowed to sneeze or blow your nose, Need pure rest and hydrated, everything will be fine, wish all the best to whomever going through this surgery or planning to do, waiting for the result of the future effect, take care.

Feeling a bit better now but sleeping is terrible. Was given the option to have the splints removed at the 72 hour mark or wait until 7 days after the surgery. I’m trying to hold it together but I’m feeling like throwing in the towel. Any suggestions?

hey whats your thoughts on a bigger contributor to nasal congestion. would it be the nasal septum or turbinates. and are there good non surgical ways to get the turbinates to shrink? thanks
@DallasStorm43

I had a turbinectomy first to reduce the turbinates. It didn't work for me. So I am 10 days post op from the Septoplasty with another turbinate reduction. I am congested, but I can breathe and sleep so much better! There is no nonsurgical way to do either. The first one was done in office and awake, but my nose was numbed.

This surgery is not easy as they say. I did this 3 days ago and I am recovering. I had a septoplasty, sinus surgery, concha bullosa crushing, nasal polyp (3.1 * 2.7) removal. I am writing this comment for updated surgery procedure. Day 1: I was admitted to the hospital at 9pm after having light dinner and I was forbidden to eat or drink anything past 12 am so that I wouldnt choke on my food when I am given general anesthesia. Day 2 : Doctors will place you in general anestheaia so you wont know shit. Trust me absolutely nothing and the surgery will be done in ziffy. The duration should be 45 min to 1.5 hr if you plan to do just septoplasty like the gentleman but mine took 3 hrs and 10 minutes. Doctor put a windpipe from my mouth to my windpipe so that I can breathe. After you wake up after surgery, you will be in ICU and you wont feel any pain and stuffs until the anaesthesia wears off. You will be kept in ICU until you urinate and your surgeon inspects you. Your nose will be packed with different kind of splints. There is no more packing like above video. Doctors placed 4 splints and stiched it inside my nose. You will have 0 breathing from nose and it will be very very very uncomfortable. You will be given antibiotics and non inflammatory pain killers through your canal. And you just rest in your cabin suffering. Day 3 : Doctor called me to OT and then cut my stiches and removed all of those splints. The experience was a bit painful. But , as soon as they are finished with removing splints. You will breathe in 4K for like 2 hrs. After that the swelling hits you hard. You will be recongested and will have bloody discharge along with post nasal drips. They sent me home with oral meds and only decongestant drops. Day 5 : You are expected to visit doctor. Doctor will clean your nasal airway with a suction and then inspect your healing. That suction also hurts moderately. After inspecting doctor will provide you nasal irrigation concept and also nasal steroid along with some cream to ease your stiches. You are supposed to do irrigation twice a day. A lot of videos say to do irrigation as much as you like but those are wrong. You need your nose to slowly build mucus for normal functioning. There will be no hard pain after the splints were removed. But due to swelling, you will feel stuffed and congested. Quick Notes : 1. Getting a Humidifier Helps 2. You can have pain in the front two teeth and the gum. Its normal as the cartillage shares the same base. But its extremely annoying. 3. You might have a stiff jaw as you open your mouth for a prolonged amount of time to breathe. 4. You are not supposed to blow your nose no matter what. 5. I personally think you should try nasal irrigation prior to surgery, it will be a bit hard getting used to it with wounds inside your nose. 6. Rest is essential. Take a week off. Don't listen to others saying that you are work after 3 days. Its not worth in long run. Good luck with your surgery. I am resting. Eagerly waiting for 1 week to end.

Also i was to to use afrin spray. If you nose bleeds spray afrin to stop the bleeding and it definitely do that. I have constant blockage in my nose - some days are worse then others, but it's always there. It's led to me suffering from severe sleep apnea which has been going on for 7-8 years now. I did a sleep study a few years back (during the Covid period) and was told that I was only getting about 30% of the oxygen levels of a normal person. Up until now I have been putting up with it, but the past couple of years it's been getting to the point of dangerous. I fall asleep and have naps at my desk at work almost every day which people have noticed and is not a good look, and I've had three car accidents over the past couple of years because of microsleeps - two of them were very mild (I just scraped the car against a wall with minimal damage) but the third was a rear end collision that actually wrote off the other person's car. When I get a cold or flu and actually get a blocked nose, my breathing gets so restricted that I have (2 or 3 times) woken up in the middle of the night gasping for breath thinking I might not make it throught he next 30 seconds. Every single night I use nasal strips AND dab some vicks under my nostril which helps just enough for me to be able to get a passable sleep - that has been helping to the point where I'm not longer having the microsleeps and falling asleep at work has become less prominent (but still happens). I've tried nasal sprays and salt water rinses - occasionally they help a little bit, often they do little to nothing. I've told all of this to my doctors in the past and all they basically ignore my comments about my nose blockages and keep pushing me towards CPAP machines - which I already tried and struggled to breath with it on. I have kinda been holding off, but I think I'm at the point where I really need to see an doctor and push them to book me in for the surgery. I've reached a point where I am sincerely concerned for my career, my health and the people around me.

Agree with others that after one week, I still couldn't breath any better than prior to surgery. With that said, after one week, the blood clot removal via salt water irrigation slowed. I am hopeful that the final result will be like how I could breathe right after the stents were removed. Dr. said it could take up to 3 months! Ok. I am waiting. 🙂
