How precious, 4 Highland babies on the homestead. Congrats on all your hard work. It's paying off. I always look forward to your videos. Watching you and your family work together and actually love it. Im Praying for a small homestead soon. Im 53 with 2 adult children who live here. One lives away from here and the oldest of my children passed away 2 years ago. It was both our dreams to have a place to homestead. This year I started with a memorial rose bush in his memory. I tell people, IT STARTED WITH A ROSE BUSH. I heard Justin Rhodes say, plant one thing and I did. Next I had completely planted a 15 x 20 ft garden with mine and my son's favorite vegetables. Some of it is over my head. Completely organic. Hand full of Cucumbers daily, dozens of Cherry tomatoes every week on my oldest plant. The other 15 tomatoes are all different varieties. And in full bloom. 20 jalapeno plants in full bloom and lots of lettuce ready to pick our second batch. We got our first long neck yellow squash yesterday. Now waiting for a few more ready this week and cooking a batch of fried yellow neck squash. I Can't wait to plant my fall garden. It's crazy a cucumber can grow 3 to 4 inches a day. And my watermelon Vines grow a foot or more every night. So excited. The owners of the small lot we live on were kind of skeptical about my plan for my garden but very encouraging. Omg she came over a week ago and put up her hands saying oh my, look what you've done. I thought oh no, she doesn't know about the Hobit movies. Then she said " OMG" this is right out of the Hobit movie. She loved it.

We had badger issues on the ranch I grew up on, but not with our poultry or geese. We had to have the game warden come out and live trap them and remove them. They kept digging big dens into the sides of our irrigation ditches and causing washouts in the wheat fields. Badgers are just a large weasel so I am not too surprised they will kill geese. Unfortunately they are also territorial and will kill just about anything they come across, whether they need it for food or not. It has got to be so discouraging to try to raise free ranging animals under these conditions. I am so sorry for your loss. Your children seem to take a healthy attitude about it and that is good. I hope this does not put too much of a financial burden on your prospects for the year. Farmers have never had it easy and are so at the mercy of many things. Try not to be discouraged, you have a beautiful farm with beautiful animals, and it is so enjoyable to see. Thank you for sharing.

Yes there is a beeper in the cabin so driver knows the bale is tight enough. Then twine starts rolling around the bale, bale chamber opens and finished bale will roll out. And of course... it's an art to get even, cylinder shaped, sharp edged bales :-)

I notice how sheep don't protect their lambs to this extent. The way a cow will stop at nothing to attack anyone daring to touch her calf. Sheep don't go that far, and it seems like there are many more videos of ewes rejecting lambs than cows rejecting calves. Are cows just more warm hearted mothers than sheep?

Definitely pretty big, I wouldn't want to be at the other end with the charging mother and gang! Very cool haymaker. How does the bail get wrapped? Or does it get spun? Damn badgers. Her pausing as she approached is a true sign that she submits to you and trusts you. If she didn't, she wouldn't have hesitated continuing forward and possibly even goring you or striking you with her front hooves. One can tell that you work with your cattle quite a lot. Hi Simeon , I see that at least one cow has good teats. I do not understand why you do not milk your cows. I know that you have said that you do not use much dairy. Your family drinks no milk ? You eat no cheese ? You use no butter ? All of which you could make yourself. I have read that your highland cattle do give a high quality milk. You could have even more use from your cows if you also milked them.. Ha ha , not only did mama coming charging up but it looked like the whole herd came to help her also.
@simeonandalex6 жыл бұрын
Right now it would be too much for me to train a cow and milk it. Maybe in the future.
@Theorimlig6 жыл бұрын
You could alternatively get a single dairy or combination breed cow and milk her, plus using her for breeding meat breed crosses and get an income from the calves and the milk as a bonus. Something like one of the old swedish landrace cow breeds would work fine as a mother cow to the light meat breeds you're interested in. They make good suckler cows as I understand it, and are better adapted to being milked (especially their temperament is more suitable).
@donaldmiller86296 жыл бұрын
Hi Simeon , A cow will learn the routine pretty fast . They want to unload that milk you know. Even so , they will always think that the grass is greener on the other side of the fence. If you have enough milk you can always sell it for extra income.

Those doggone badgers. So sorry for the loss of your two geese. So discouraging. I'm thinking that maybe the badgers felt threatened in some way, by the geese, or they had babies or something. Badgers can be really mean when trapped or threatened, from what I hear. You sure have some beautiful healthy cattle there. All we have here are cats, chickens, and a blue and red mix heeler cattle dog that thinks it's his job in life to protect those chickens. A neighbors' chicken jumped the fence into ours, and the dog went after it, but I grabbed their rooster and carried him home to safety. Even other chickens, if they don't belong here, are at the dog's mercy, other birds, feral cats, skunks, raccoons as well. He guards his chickens with his life. One time a big black dog jumped the fence into their area, grabbed one of the hens, flat-footed it over the fence with the hen in his mouth before the heeler could get out the door. After about 20 minutes that hen came sauntering into the yard, wanting to come back into the gate. I still don't know how she got away from that dog. Guess I'll just rack that up to being a miracle. Maybe you need to get a blue or red heeler pup, I know they're good watchers. Good noses and big ears. :)
@SolaceRadioMeanderRadioNetwork6 жыл бұрын
Also, the heeler runs around the entire area every evening when it's time to put them up, checking to see if any are left out of the coop- he looks like he's counting them. He wasn't trained to do this, it's just in his breeding, I guess. Amazing to see.
