Very nice. Thanks. Hunter gets a bad rep that is not deserved. How many boat have moulded in aluminum backing plates ready to go. And I love the traveler/arch, and the “pilot house “ that you have made. I am a US Sailing instructor and have cruised for nearly 30 yrs. I worked for an outfit in San Francisco. At the time we had a fleet of nearly 50 boats, 80%+ were Hunters. We taught more off shore and costal classes than any other school. Sailing in the SFO bay is a challenge as normal winds are 20=30 kts! Strong currents, cold water and heavy shipping lanes makes for challenging but good learning. Saying off shore SFO is even much more challenging. I remember when I first moved there from the E coast, I was listening to VHF weather and thought I heard them say seas 15 feet! Ok. Not a good day. Upon listening closer, they were saying not fifteen but FIFTY feet. Yeah, we’ll stay in the bay today. I once remember beating up the coast in a blow with very large steep seas. We dropped into a hole on the back of a large wave, maybe 3.5-4 M. We his so hard that the radar antenna mounted on the mast snapped off it’s mounts from the shock and hit the fordeck! Nothing else broken. We put those boats through some crap.

I worked on a 41 Morgan charter boat in Florida and a yacht detailing service 40 yrs ago. I always thought Hunter's had issues with leaking in Florida and sailed poorly. My mind was changed when a friend had a Hunter 29 or 30 in San Diego. The owner/skipper was one of the owners of the Neil Pryde loft. For years, we raced that boat and won countless races and the High Point Series races a couple times. We did have a gray whale hit the boat on a race around the Coronado Islands. It stopped the boat dead in the water. I'm glad I decided to not be aboard that day. No damage and the whale did swim away. Fortunately, for the crew it was only a gray whale. One day, fishing in the same area on a 90' boat, we saw a blue whale that was bigger than our vessel. It was one of those experiences you never forget. Sounds like you had a lot of fun sailing in that cold water and current.

Well we were hit by an Orca mid Aug. Just of the coast of Sines. (Pt) - it took 2 tows - 2 months and 40k€ to get the boat’s rudder replaced and up and runing

It all ads up - we for one had to hire a professional tow from Sines to Cascais - replace the rudder and the kwadrant etc. Luckily much was covered by our insurance cover

Another great vid indeed. Perhaps you could reach out to Bluetti or Anker and "try" one of their power storage units. Your solar setup could keep the unit charged. This would help your boat without having to fire up the generator. I would get one that had enough power to run the water maker. Just a suggestion guys. I am always impressed with how clean you keep the boat. Thanks for all you do. Very entertaining as always. Fair winds and safe travels.

I recommend taking some banger thunder/flashes to drive of the Orcas. There's some kids ones, like little grenades that won't harm the orca but may just keep them off. It's for their own good. Lots get hurt butting into yachts and props. They're not stupid and will soon learn.

The whole Orca scare aside (which would totally shoot my anxiety through the roof), the sea states sure seem calmer than the easterly Atlantic crossing when you first came over. Not sure if that is typical or just your expertise in professional weather sail routing:-) Wow, expresso machine while crossing the ocean? Now we know the real reason Travis insisted on picking up that additional generator!:-) Wish you both the best!

Happy to hear it! The easterly crossing is upwind so tends to be a bit more demanding in weather routing and sportier of a ride. We lucked out on the first leg of that crossing! Haha the espresso machine is a game changer but now, we only have 1 Ext genny. The first one has since bit the dust!

RE: Orcas and sailboat rudders Is it possible that Orcas are going after voltage leaks out propeller shafts? The props sit right in front of the rudders. This could be easily verified by checking the zinks of boats that have been attaked.

Anyone care to guess why orcas contacting boats in North America is very rare ( it has happened but its unusual) there is a reason, you can all figure it out if you think about it.

Re. Your coffee (power) issue. I have been cold brewing for over 30 years, and never prefer hot brewed if I can avoid it. Cold brew is much less acidic and tastes great. There are several inexpensive CB systems. (Toddy ~$35 US.)

Sailing AWEN carried a couple of bags of sand to repel the whales if that started to bite the rudder. Zatara carried some for of large fire cracker to do the same thing. you might check their most recent episodes. they both made it through unscathed.

I meant to mention it, but it’s an off-angled block so it has a bigger upper lip on the sheave You could throttle up and motor away quickly and ppl have been throwing sand, firecrackers

I'd get rid of that stupid spin sock. Those are more hassle than they are worth. Maybe try a symmetrical spinnaker with a pole some day. Much easier and more stable to go dead down wind with. We carry 3 kites. 1 light asymmetrical, 1 light symmetrical, and one 1oz symmetrical for heavier winds. Some use a 1.5 oz reacher in 20+knt winds, but are heavy and hard to handle with just 2 people IMO.

Your path to avoid the Orcas went right through the most reported attacks. It was not by planning that saved you it was your buddy boat that took the hit. If you did better research you would have traveled the north coast a lot further before crossing. That would have been the best planned route.
