Rit Dye 101 - Color Remover

www.ritstudio.com Rit Color Remover is used primarily to remove or reduce color from fabric prior to dyeing with Rit Dye. It reduces the color to an off-white or cream color, creating a clean, even base color for dyeing. Color Remover is suitable for use on most washable fabrics, including cotton, linen, rayon, silk, and nylon. It may have a limited effect on polyester, depending upon how it was dyed commercially. Color Remover is a non-chlorine, reductive type of bleach that will not damage or deteriorate washable fabrics as chlorine bleach will.

THIS STUFF SMELLS VERY STRONG. I would advise you to have THOROUGH ventilation when using this product. It works very well, but my entire apartment REEKS and the smell will not leave.

Put a pot of vinegar/water next time on the stove and boil for at least 20-40 minutes, set an alarm so you do not forget and boil it dry.......Works when cooking fish indoors. I dye outside with a turkey frying set up when I can.

Thanks for the video! I think Rit colour remover will solve my problem. I bought a 100% cotton casual shirt that was supposed to be off-white, but when it came it was too yellow. Hi Ashley, Color remover can work quickly, especially when used on something dyed with Rit. This might take only a minute, or it could take 10-15 minutes, depending on how much you want it to lighten. You'll want to watch it while you're doing it, stirring to have the color remove evenly, and take it out and rinse it as soon it's the color you want. Depending what the graphic design is made of, there is a chance it might also lighten the design so watch for that too.

Hi Rit, I used color remover on a 100% cotton suit and It didn't really do much. The temp was around 180 degrees I agated it with spoons and then rinsed after 30 minutes and It didn't take out any color. Suggestions?

+MRblahface Commercially dyed items can sometimes take as much as 60-90 minutes to lose color. Not sure how much color remover you used, but a full suit might need 2-3 packets of remover. Definitely using it on a stovetop with constant heat (temp you used sounds good) is needed.

I have a question regarding this technique. I have purchased RIT colour remover and would like to use it for classroom curtains which I tried to revitalise but turned brown : (. I don't have a stainless steel pot large enough for the technique but I do have an aluminium one. The instructions say not to use aluminium - would you be able to let me know why? Because if it is 'safe' to use it is the only container I have to do the technique via the stove top method. Looking forward to hearing from you.

+Tamara Da Silva Thanks for asking. You can use aluminum for this, however, the reason we don't recommend it is because the pot could become scarred or pitted from the salt in our dye/color remover. So if you're not too attached to the pot, go for it, but if it's something you love or is expensive, just a word of caution that it could get damaged.

As the instructions say, it depends on how the polyester was colored in the first place. If it is printed or dipped so that the the dye sits on top of the fabric, you can probably use dye remover. If the dye is melded into the polymer, probably not.

Crystallites Kawaii Hi! While you can dye Keds, there's not necessarily a perfect method for getting a green material white. There's no white dye--dye is formulated based on the theory it's dyeing something white a new color---and while Color Remover will take out the color, it may get it to a cream or off-white rather than a pure white. Additionally, if the fabric is striped or patterned, that pattern will remain on some level with the color removed, so it won't be an even color. On the upside: color remover does not damage material like bleach does, so you can always dye the shoes a new color after using it if you can't get the white you want. Not sure what the wedge is made of, but color remover works best when used in a pot on a stovetop so it stays hot throughout the process (it can take 10-60 minutes to remove color). If you think the shoes can handle being immersed in it, we say use that method. You could also pour water heated on a stove into a bucket if stovetop isn't an option. Ashley Kurten Hi Ashley, you could definitely try. We can't guarantee it will work as bleach can damage the fibers of fabric and sometimes its effects can't be reversed. But no harm trying to save the shirt, right? There are two ways you could go about this: 1) Use color remover to remove all the color and bleach stains from the shirt and tie-dye it new, www.ritstudio.com/faq/will-rit-dye-cover-bleach-spots/. 2) Try removing just the bleach spots by brushing on the color remover, letting it soak in and then rinsing it out. This could bleed a little and remove some of the blue color too, but since you're going for a tie-dye effect that's probably okay. Good luck!

Hi, You could try to use color remover to remove the color of the stains, but when bleach stains are yellow it usually means the bleach has damaged the fabric's fibers. When that happens the fibers don't absorb anything anymore so neither the color remover nor our dye would take to the fabric in the stained areas. If you want to try and see if it works, the best thing to do is use the stovetop method--put water in a pot on the stove, add a packet of color remover, stir, then add the shirt, stirring occasionally, and see if the stain's color goes away. You want a pot big enough for the shirt to move freely when stirred. Color remover can work its magic in 10 minutes, or take up to 60 minutes, depending on how the fabric was dyed to begin with. In this case 10-30 minutes should be enough time to see if it works. Good luck!

The packaging suggests that color remover will remove or reduce color from most fabrics and to not use on denim or on fabric that is dry clean only or that has metal fibers. So if the suit has any of these characteristics we would recommend that you not treat it with color remover.

+William Wood None of our products need to be used for more than an hour or two to get results. And since color remover works best when used stovetop, we definitely don't recommend your leaving the stove on unattended! Color remover can work in as fast as 10-15 minutes, or take up to 60 or 90 minutes to gain its full effect, depending on how the material was originally dyed. +Bre Sutherland Hi Bre, This can definitely be fixed. Color remover should remove the pink splotches, however, it will also remove ALL the color in the jacket if it is immersed in it, so could take out the black and gold too. It might not get the splotches back to a pure white but a cream or off-white instead. You could try heating color remover (mix color remover with water in a pot on the stove) and using rubber gloves to protect your hands, sponging it onto the pink splotches to try to spot clean it. Either way, that's a good place to start as you'll want to try to remove the pink splotches before dyeing the jacket black as those splotches could cause the dye color to take unevenly (depends on how big and dark they are). Dyeing it black is easy. Not on the original color. That is baked into the resin. However, it works great on stripping color if a dye job doesn’t look right

Hi Justin! We've noticed that color remover doesn't work on the screen printed areas, it acts as a natural resist when dyeing, too! Hope this helps

It sure does, we use Color Remover to do reverse tie-dye on black garments. Although, it all depends on what the original color was prior to the commercial dyeing process. Oftentimes black garments will "lift" into a light grey or brown.

+David Sanchez Every manufacturer has different dyes and processes which makes it difficult to give a set answer to your question. If the design is a dye-based design, it is possible that the design will be removed or fade to some degree with this process. Generally speaking, however, it is likely that the design on your shirt is something more permanent and will remain in place when using Rit Color Remover. If this shirt and design is something very important, it would be best to not use this method for this particular shirt. If, on the other hand, the shirt is not being worn at all and you could live with the design potentially fading to varying degrees, that would be up to you to try. Sorry we can't give you a more specific answer. You can always post a photo of the shirt on our Facebook page to give us a better idea of what you are working with too.

While color remover does work on cotton, it does not work on jeans even if they're cotton due to the dye process involved in dyeing jeans indigo. More on that in the link in our comment to you above. People do use bleach to turn their jeans white. We recommend searching for a KZbin video on how best to do that without causing damage to your jeans. That's not our area of expertise. Sorry.

Because our Color Remover works best with very high heat, it is possible that this could be too hot for a fabric that incorporates rabbit fur. I have recently been having some dyeing troubles and found this video, and I think it may be the answer to my problem but I am looking for a bit of advice on what I am proposing to do I have a 100% cotton khaki jumpsuit which I wanted to change to a grey blue colour. I therefore mixed a combination of grey and navy dye. Sadly, when I took it out, it became extremely dark (more of a navy denim colour). Will colour remover be able to help help me lighten my jumpsuit and give it a washed, faded look as it could strip some of the dye off (providing that I don't leave it in for the recommended time so that it doesn't take it out completely)? Karlie W Hi, Using color remover this way could work. It's a lot like bleach only it doesn't damage fibers. So it will lighten the color of the jumpsuit. It can work quickly, though, so you'll want to keep an eye on it. And also stir often like you would when dyeing to remove color evenly. If it fades the color too much, you can always keep the jumpsuit in the color remover until it removes all the dye, taking it back to a cream or off white color and dye it again. So even if this method doesn't work, you'll have a clean slate to dye the jumpsuit the color you want. We have lots of color formulas on our site in the color library under Pantone and Archive colors that might help you get the color you're looking for, and we also create custom color formulas if we don't have a formula for the color you want. Rit Dye Many thanks for your prompt response. I will try the Colour Remover method and see how it goes. If not, I see that you have instructions for Country Blue in your Archive colours which is near enough exactly what I'm looking for (although it is a tad darker than what I'm looking for).
