Here's a look at the Gray scales on the Native 5 Maxamet getting dyed. Sort of a boring few minutes as I wait for results, but the process is this quick and I wanted to show the whole thing.
Next: CRKT LCK, Kershaw Fraxion vs. Method, D2 Testing Video
Thanks for watching and take care!

It was easy to do, as you can see. Just dye and water, piece of cake!

I've seen a few people ask, so I'll share my own experience. I have a Yellow Spyderco Dragonfly that was blue fade dyed by KnivesPlus. After a year of being carried everyday the blue green rubbed off and faded into what is a purplish color. Knife now looks like a bruised banana. Going to re-dye. Just thought I'd share that the shelf life on my dye job was about a year of constant carry.

I like the tutorial format, and I love the results you got using RIT liquid dye on the Spydie scales. You got a wonderful fade effect that looks like Spyderco did it at their factory. Questione : How well does the dye adhere to the material? Does any color rub off, like when the knife is in pocket ? Maybe try rubbing a white cloth on the scale if you are not sure. Anyway, nice work JT!

Mike Jergens I'm not answering for JT but in my experience with RIT dying it stays really well if you know how to thoroughly wash off the excess dye after you are done dying.

It'll stay just fine, even with use. After the first few seconds the color sets and it's pretty much a done deal. Nothing that I've ever seen rubs off.

Thank you for the video. Much appreciated. Always wondered how it would work. Please forgive the noob question, but will the dye eventually wear off?
@JTsKnifeLife
@JTsKnifeLife 6 жыл бұрын
Well, it could, but it would take a lot of unconventional wear. Somethings I dyed years ago look exactly the same now as when I first did them. Removing dye can be a long an tough process, so I'd call it pretty permanent.

@@JTsKnifeLife Loved the video man, i'm starting to play with dyes now, and will start with Titanium Ano someday(gathering everything i need). It is possible to remove the dye on G10? i'm tryng to find any info about that, and... no luck!

It looks good..modding knives is interesting but not my thing.. Off topic but picked up a BNIB BM 484 (G10, M390) at store up in Maine.. It says December 2013 Prototype on blade and box.. The F&F is great..Not sure how rare it is..Any idea ? Thanks....
@JTsKnifeLife
@JTsKnifeLife 6 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure how many prototypes get made for each model, but usually they're much rarer and harder to come by than knives in the first production runs. It's a really cool thing to have, especially for such an excellent model!

Thanks JT... It is cool..I know you are a big BM guy.. Did a search and only found 2 or 3 that had been for sale..I'll probably hang onto it..I still have 50ish knives so it would be foolish to use it..

JT's Knife Life What do you reckon that dye would do to titanium scales say.... A Spydiechef :)
@JTsKnifeLife
@JTsKnifeLife 6 жыл бұрын
Jordan Steffanson I don't think it'll take. Some GFN scales work well, FRN, etc. But anything else is a struggle. Anything polished in terms of G10 and plastics can be difficult too.

Sorry for the snarky reply hahaha. I do have a number of videos on the honey badger with mods. It's pretty simple to do, and the tan is light enough that almost any color will work. I thought it wasn't possible to remove a scale w pins? I see screws but I also see 1 pin toward the top. How do you remove pins?
@JTsKnifeLife
@JTsKnifeLife 6 жыл бұрын
That's just the stop pin, so it pops out when the rest of the knife is disassembled. Otherwise though, yeah, pin together construction can ruin a lot of plans.

@@JTsKnifeLife It turned out pretty good! I did the reverse from you, from blue to grey-black. I have a deep carry clip coming soon but just wanted to thank you now. i.imgur.com/krPzAUb.jpg I put my lockbar together again backwards, the little flat steel tension spring, so everyone should spare themselves the headache and make sure they don't do that. I kept it on the stove for about 30 minutes because I wanted to achieve a darker colour and my local store didn't have the synthetic dye in black, only the powder stuff. One of the little metal inserts with the threads fell out so I probably cooked it a little too hot, but it was nothing a little superglue couldn't fix.
