She was absolutely exceptional. Her "Médée" (in the original French) is overwhelming, and it's no exaggeration to say that in a different style more than a match for Callas' one.

I'll have to look for it, after hearing her here I don't doubt she could do Médée justice as well. I am really only familiar with Medea as sung by Callas, and I was distinctly underwhelmed by Médée at the Scala in January this year (I'd hoped to see it with Marina Rebeka, but she was ill that day, so no luck, and I was not at all impressed with the various cuts and the staging). All this to say, I'm still looking for a good Médée in the original French, and now I know where to look!

Great Rita Gorr ! Here, she is the epitome in malevolence, BUT, when some of her colleagues are tempted to scream and forget the legato, she never ceases to sing admirably. And the match with Elisabeth Grümmer's angelic voice is ideal.

58 years after her debut (1949 Fricka) she still dominated the scene at 81 when I saw her farewell performance in Antwerp 2007 as Countess in Tchaikovsky's Queen of Spades.

I find Wagner quite hard to digest, no doubt in part due to my poor knowledge of German. On an intellectual level, I do appreciate his quest/goal to create a Gesamtkunstwerk, but the music in itself brings me less pleasure than Italian opera. And I suspect I also lack the stamina for it, in small doses I am certainly more able to consider more than sheer beauty and see the genius in the way he works with the sound. (And again, I am sure knowing more German would help a lot.) I must say, this fragment is great enough to make curious as to what is going on and to make me want to listen to more of the opera... And to more of Rita Gorr.

Geniuses!!! Verdi, Wagner, Rossini, Handel, Monteverdi, Bellini, Donizetti.. each created a Universe
