I had serious political depression over the past few years, as a Chinese woman living in the US. I finally feel hopeful about humans and the world lately when I see genuine and kind communication between ordinary Americans and Chinese on REDnote, as the world was supposed to be. I want a better world for my kid, and I want to help Mandarin learners learn the tonal language better, as always. Please be respectful and kind, or go somewhere else to BS. “Finding Your Mandarin Voice" Intonation Boot camp starts on Feb. 3 ritachinese.com/

There has been "genuine and kind communication" between Chinese and Americans for decades. I know tons of Chinese people (my wife being one, as well), and have never once met one that said they felt Americans were unkind toward them. Nor have I heard any American say they were treated unkindly by a Chinese person. I'm sure it does happen sometimes, but iI don't think it's a widespread phenomenon. I don't know what "political depression" means, but it seems you're implying that your perceived dislike of Chinese by Americans has to do with politics. But that is simply untrue. The vast majority of Americans I have talked to are very clear that the CCP does not represent the Chinese people.
@RitaChinese7 күн бұрын
@ In-person talk is usually kind, and it’s also a privilege for people who get to travel across the world to have the conversation. I got some weird looks when I moved to the US at the beginning of 2020, and that doesn’t represent “Americans” since I’ve met, taught, and became friends with so many Americans. Political depression can be caused by both sides. A lot of misinformation in China, too. Non-government communications are even more important now than ever.
@xuexizhongwen7 күн бұрын
@@RitaChinese Well, people being mean online is not limited to any race or language. The few people doing that are not even worth paying attention to. The political situation is awful, not just in China or America, but in every country in the world. I can see how that would cause one to be depressed. I don't worry about too much, though, since there's not much we can do about it, anyway. Yes, it is difficult for some people inside mainland China to communicate with foreigners, that's true. Depending on where they live, they might rarely encounter one. They might not be able to afford a plane ticket, and might not speak the local language where they go, anyway. And it would be unlikely that they would happen to run across a foreigner who speaks Chinese well. Foreign social media sites are blocked, and some people might not know how to use a VPN. And non-Chinese people don't use Chinese apps much, until now. I agree that conversation between normal people is more important now than ever, but since the app is highly censored, it makes it impossible to talk about the things that could actually make a difference. In order for the political situation to change, people have to first realize how bad it already is.

I have also been so excited to see this! I am a Texan and my wife is from Hubei. We use Rednote all the time to brainstorm with local Chinese people about recipes, childcare, restaurants etc. Seeing the flood of Americans onto the platform for me feels like the first time our two worlds have collided in such a direct, personal way. Its been very entertaining to watch them interact! I'm afraid Rednote is likely to suffer the same fate as Tiktok eventually, but this is a good moment for the world.

A lot of Chinese websites and apps do require a Chinese phone number to register an account but apparently Xiaohongshu is the exception here. And since so many foreigners are using it, I get on the platform as well and use it to share my art like my Instagram account. I also really like the Q&A between Chinese people and American people. It’s interesting but I also think there is a lot of self-glorification and self-deprecation going on. I am Chinese American so I can definitely offer my own perspective as a Chinese American and what we do to survive in the USA. 😅

Yes, that made me super sad to see. I made the mistake of searching the term 黑人 in hopes that it would be as wholesome as a lot of the other interactions I was seeing. My husband is Black and when I see the things some people say, it makes me feel he/we probably shouldn't travel to China. I would hate for him to run into that way of thinking on a trip. He doesn't speak Chinese so he might not realize, but if I heard people saying something about him I know it would really affect me.

I think I am too old for this. My first thought was: What? Mao's little red book?
@RitaChinese6 күн бұрын
1. The Chinese name of Mao's little red book (weird translation anyway) is 红宝书, so no one would think about Mao when we see a modern app called 小红书 2. Young Chinese don't know much about or even care about any of those, so yeah, they won't overreact to an unofficial English translation

@@RitaChinese In western languages, like turkish (küçük kırmızı kitap), german (Das kleine rote Buch), english (LRB), 红宝书 is known as "little red book". So, me as an old western person, reading "little red book" in chinese immediately reminds me of my chinese teacher in 1991 telling me about that book. @@avalotikeshwara6136 thank you for sharing! Would love to know how you learned Chinese from a teacher back in the 90s🤔
@avalotikeshwara61365 күн бұрын
@@RitaChinese 1990. In order to read chinese books on TCM I started learning chinese by myself. Struggling with no system, I started studying Sinology at university. In germany there are no fees, you study whatever you want. In third semester we were able to say "Merry Christmas", "This is not the car of my mother", "Let's go fishing!". Those sentences would be useless for me in China. Back in that time in germany, chinese were known as "Working ants wearing grey uniform clothes". No one knew green tea or fresh ginger. Thats when I quit university and went on for myself, getting all kinds of "teach yourself chinese" books and travelling to china several times. The best thing that happened to me was a six cassette tape course "chinese pronunciation", which taught me "news announcer pronunciation", so people in China would communicate with my like they would to a chinese, which sped up my learning. As a turk, in China I switched to traditional turkish behaviour mode, which made me lots of "Oh, you will be my brother!" "Oh, let me be your sister, you are family!" "You are one of us!" reactions.
