I'm sad to hear the street stalls have vanished. I lived in Beijing for 4 years and I had food poisoning a few times BUT never from street stalls. It was always from restaurants.

Can confirm, your English is excellent. Even though it's pretty heavily accented, after 10 seconds of hearing you speak I would have zero hesitation speaking completely naturally to you in English, without concern that you might not understand.

Yes, we American's like to make a pretty mess of complex stories. Time and money. I'm just glad they didn't cast Sylvester Stallone as a lead character, driving a big truck into space to beat up aliens. ... although that might have been "interesting", but in a very different way.

Firstly, separate the book from the life action series. TV series will never be true to the series no matter what (I'm aware many say the Chinese series stayed very true to the series, but wait...). The Netflix version, while altered and embellished to fit Western taste, did not have exaggerated over-acting (mostly in the form of "frustrated cigarette-smoking, down-on-his-luck, staring-on-ground-while-reading-lines man" expressions) that was common in the Chinese series. Western series generally don't do a lot of hand-holding, they explain quickly and move on. Meanwhile Chinese (Asian in general), for example when they need to show you a lighter, THEY EXPLICITLY TELL YOU that "THIS IS A LIGHTER". If they show you a bike, they need to explicitly tell you in the script that "THIS IS A BIKE". I'm a non-PRC Chinese, and growing up watching many Chinese series I found the Chinese and Asian entertainment in general to be very difficult to watch - terribly unnecessarily slow, over-dramatic, extreme hand-holding, and terrible acting. Even Wandering Earth, although a decent story, had plenty of exaggerated poor acting and unnecessary hand-holding. This actually reflects in the way their MNCs work too - but I've digressed. The so called argument in this video about how Game of Thrones feels "fast food" contributes to how many times I've said "unnecessary". That's the problem is with Chinese entertainment - they think the audience are stupid and need absolute hand-holding. I don't feel "fast food", I want to be told one or two facts and move on, because I can draw my own conclusions and the story will lead me on. It encapsulates everything how Chinese people consume stories - series can have 100-200 episodes and it still doesn't feel enough, because that's how they're conditioned. Lastly, there's a lot of "criticism" about the Netflix version but in the end there's an admitted 'grey area' about the representation of Cultural Revolution. When you can't even talk about your own history clearly, you can't complain when others try to fill in the gaps themselves. You can't even defend how "draggy and watered down" the Tencent version is - I'll outright tell you that while Netflix isn't the greatest and as long as you're not typically Chinese, you'll find Tencent's to be an absolute waste of time,

I don't think the Netflix version would have been as broadly popular if it has been as slow as the Tencent version. Remember also it was for an international audience. The Tencent version was for the domestic audience. If it had been more like the Tencent version its appeal would have only targeted the die-hard Science fiction fan. Like this it was able to reach a broader audience, some of whom will now seek out the books.

I think Ye Wenjie in the Netflix series put on glamorous makeup because, unlike in the novel, she didn't see herself as an enemy to humanity. She thought she was summoning a wiser, more freedom loving group of benevolent old hipsters. 😂🎉❤

Jun Laoshi is one of the most beautiful women I've ever seen. I was searching and I find it weird Jun isn't more well known. In US/UK she could easily be a model or famous presenter if she has the height, she has incredible looks and amazing bone structure- winning smile too. It's so weird how China values totally different features.

@@RitaChinese The problems for China in the future are immense. I worry for the future of China and can sadly see the government there having an open door policy which will destroy Chinese culture, much like open doors to illegals has ruined London and the rest of the UK. The younger Chinese need to be more traditional and not be so influenced by western society. Remember what I said Rita. Look at Japan who now want to open their doors, watch the crime rate soar. That will happen in China too, it will spoil your peace and harmony.

Changsha still has many street vendors, fresh and cooked foods. This was my first time to Changsha (this last October) just after the holidays, but there were a lot of people even in the daytime. We went to Orange Island in the middle of the day and in the middle of the week and it was completely full of people. This was also my first time being able to use Alipay for everything. I am fully addicted now. When I got back to the U.S., I felt like I had gone back in time. 😥Only barbarians use cash and cards. 🥺 The really interesting thing is that Changsha still has malls, both huge inside and massive outward facing malls with large numbers of restaurants. Xinjiang food is very popular, especially with me. We don't really have malls anymore in the U.S. I had the same experience with wifi in the Changsha high-speed station. I even had a Chinese e-sim, but it took me another 24-hours to figure out that I needed a Chinese phone number and not just a data plan. Very frustrating when you get to a brand new place. Fortunately, I was able to hail a ride outside and get to my hotel. I was able to get a Chinese sim delivered to the hotel in like 8 hours, so that was really cool. After that, I did everything from Alipay. lol Fortunetly, my phone accepts both sims and e-sims or I would have been in real trouble.
