Ritchie Blackmore discusses a great moment whilst recording with Cozy Powell and Bob Daisley whilst in France in 1977 for the recording of 'Long Live Rock n Roll'.
With great trepidation these giants of hard rock discuss how "They all love ABBA!"

I must be the minority here, I can't stand ABBA to me they sound like vacuous drivel (albeit with great vocal harmonies I must admit) But I know Jon Lord loved them and was friends with Frida. Now I'm discovering Ritchie and Cozy liked them as well Clearly I need to revisit the ABBA catalogue with an open mind

Good musicians are influenced by all sorts of music, as long as it is quality, real music. And the way you can tell is that good music stands the test of time. Are people listening to ABBA 50 years later? Yes, by the millions. Will they be listening to ABBA in another 50 years from now? Most likely. Same applies for Rainbow and Deep Purple. They've made some immortal records.

It's like all kinds of musicians loving The Beatles, it is undeniable. They changed music, and ABBA did the same as well. They both have such an amazing musical reach. Used to feel embarrassed about liking ABBA, but I don't care about it now and I'm glad to know I'm not alone.

More than pop songs, that is why they are loved by all musicians and fans from multiple genres. The musically inclined pick out all the baroque, classical and folk in their writing. ABBA understood how to put multiple genres together in a song and make it seamless. As for the girls. Lots of good looking girls music. Those ABBA girls, Anni-Frid and Agnetha were opposite voice types, opposite personalities, opposite styles, but sung together as if they were siblings singing together their whole life. Anni-Frid sung like a classically trained vocalist. Agnetha sung like a pop singer. Very unique pairing and it worked. Tons of bands have tried to copy the ABBA girls sound/third voice/high unison/harmonies, but have failed.

Dima likes ABBA too. You, highway star, get on the road. Get your engine running, you know... And record new rock heavy 80s rock album! Dima likes 80s music. Dima dig retrowave, you know. There are some cool musicians, and rock guitar riffs there. So, come on, jump into the fire! Make a 80s hot rock legend record, one more time! I see you are in a cool mood and health! And it is so cool summer.... I am a highway star too! Cause it is my fav song..ok, one of my fav songs.... You know... it was a big memorie....

I am a drummer, not a guitarist, (and amateur not professional] that being said my favorite rock/blues guitarists of all time in order are 1. Ritchie Blackmore 2. Roy Buchanan 3. Duane Allman. I don't think its possible to overstate my reverence for Ritchie as a guitarist. He has a unique sound and tone instantly recognizable (as did Roy and Duane which is why they're also on my Mount Rushmore). That being said I must respectfully disagree with the living God of the Stratocaster when it comes to ABBA. This probably has something to do with the fact that my parents played all of their albums ad nauseam when I was growing up while I was far more interested learning the drums by ear to Vanilla Fudge, Deep Purple, Rainbow, The Allman Brothers, Traffic, and the Dixie Dregs. I've never been drawn to popular music unless rearranged as a jazz, fusion, or prog rock standard. For instance I thought Deep Purple's cover of the Beatles song Help on Shades of Deep Purple was superior to the original. Anecdotally, John Lennon agreed and said that Deep Purple's version captured the melancholic angst which he had envisioned for the song before McCartney and the producers sanitized it. Kudos to Lord Blackmore and the late great Jon Lord for restoring his vision of the song. Now I must go and revisit ABBA to discern what I'm missing. 💯🤣🙈 I trust and value Lord Blackmore's opinion so unequivocally that I must do a deep dive on ABBA and give them another chance.
