Kotzen has always been a guitar idol of mine, from the day he released his instructional video back in the 80s that I studied for months. About 10 years ago I saw Malmsteen in a small club in PA, same stage I played on a week prior. My hearing never recovered from that night but I wasn't going to blame Yngwie. Let alone while he was performing.

I went to John Petrucci’s tour in Richmond about a year ago. The sound was incredibly loud. I felt bad because a couple next to me had to leave. The woman was loosing her hearing and had a hearing aid. she said she couldn’t risk loosing the rest. I myself had to put earplugs in, but I just remember thinking (it doesn’t have to be like this. It shouldn’t be like this). I’m sure this was a totally different situation here.

I saw opeth recently and mastodon who opened for them were wayyy too loud as well, they must think it's cool and rocknroll petrucci tho that must've been a house error

@@ejRecording Yeah it’s wild. I actually talked to a few people outside of the show and they were like “isn’t the sound great” I’m like “no w.t.f?” The one guy said he was half deaf. I talked to the sound guy too; he was older, and I’m willing to bet he has significant hearing loss as well. It’s just so unnecessary. We were in the national which is basically like a theater. Each side of the stage had, I think, 9 array speakers. There is no spot in that room where you can’t hear the music well.

@Jayhawk7207 ай бұрын
I’m not sure why he was annoyed, seems like some criticism from some person in the crowd. I think it’s a bit out of character for Richie because he’s always a cool guy. I think musicians do get enormous adulation at times but it doesn’t always come with respect for the person they are. I was at a recent Winery Dogs gig and his interaction with the crowd was totally different from that video. Having looked at the video again I think it’s understandable that he was angry at some fool criticising the sound. Richie Kotzen is not responsible for the sound out front, his responsibility is for the music played on stage. As I said I saw the Winery Dogs recently and they were incredible. And Richie on great form.

I'm guessing the fan was trying to tell Kotzen he couldn't hear his vocal. Is the right response to that to say "fuck you" and flip off the fan? Probably not, but it is sure is tempting. If I had a nickel every time I was doing a soundcheck and heard some random person yell "WE CAN'T HEAR YOU" Yeah, I know, we're checking our MONITORS.

while his response was a bit excessive, I understand his frustration. I believe he said "I'm not running the fucking sound." It seems like the woman was pressing the issue, and that must be what set Richie off. I'd never confront the band about the sound, but then again, I've played in bands for over 30 years and ran sound from stage for most of them. It's not easy to get the sound where everyone can hear it the same from anywhere. It seems like she was in a dead spot. I'm guessing they're using hired sound techs for each venue, so there's going to be some consistency problems. No way around it. It's unfortunate that Richie lost his cool. I get the impression that he's kind of moody as it is. It was a bad experience for the lady and her friends for sure.

That is nothing compared to Paul Dianno threatening to kill the house sound guy for close to seven tense minutes years back when his knee was all messed up. That was an uncomfortable situation all around at the time, but he was really a sweet guy after the show.

@@bbc_nnnn Several years ago ( obviously ). Springfield, Virginia, at the now defunct Jazz night club.
It looks like someone standing right where you are filming was complaining and gesturing to him expressing they couldn't hear his singing... I'm sure Richie could hear it because he has those monitors pointing at HIM on the floor of the stage as your video shows. Now, the people in the audience, should know the vocal sound comes from the PA system at the sides of the stage, not from the stage itself, where amps tend to be loud to give musicians the sound they need to do their work. A bit like standing in the middle of the road and complaining that all you get is cars driving towards you. If the gesturing and complaining went on for too long, I can imagine the frustration. The last thing you want to have is all that negative gesturing that comes from ignorance (they should have moved back to where the FoH mixer is to hear better) being constantly bombarded at you during your performance and ruining it for everybody else in the end.

Absolutely. There's almost nothing more frustrating and distracting while onstage trying to play, sing and perform for an audience, and have someone trying to talk at you as if no one else in the venue matters.

2 people from the audience stood right in front of the stage and in front of guitar cabs (which were really loud) and kept showing Richie that they don't hear vocals... Richie got frustrated and eventually pissed, 2 fans were then removed by security before the next song.

No Drama...The Winery Dogs just recently released their 3 rd Album, hence the tour. Doesn't seem they are cancelling any shows. Once the tour is over Richie will continue to do his solo stuff and Mike is back with Dream theatre..Billy will be continuing with Mr Big tour and seems like all of them would be wanting time off most likely..
