I HATE the fact when ppl talk tha Greats or just the Great Brazilians of all time ppl forget to mention RIVALDO. He was INCREDIBLE. This Hat trick I watched live back then and I STILL remember this. I felt it in my SOUL! This wasn't just a hatrick it was IMPORTANT goals for Barca that season to get them European Football. Huge game.

I think it's a combination of many things, he wasn't in the Joga Bonito adverts with the other Brazilians like Ronaldinho and Ronaldo. He retired from the national team in 2003 at only 31 because of a rising Kaka, he left for the Greek league around the same time too. So in short Rivaldo chose to live a more peaceful life away from mass media but he was *one of the best* of his generation, only the 90s kids would really know him without having to look up on Google :/

Ya, Valencia was the best defensive team in La Liga that season, with the fewest goals against of any team by a fairly clear margin, and they had reached 2 straight CL finals right in that specific time frame. That last goal is insane, with all the context to it, it's the type of goal you only fantasize about scoring.

Same brought me here. I still remember this moment as a child, listening to the radio in my room. This came in such a moment, Valencia were a superteam back then that had played two consecutive UCL finals. We needed a win to qualify for the UCL, taking the spot from them. And in the last minute of the last game of the season he does this ridiculous 'chilena' to complete the hattrick for the 3-2. Unbelievable, epic. Despite the reward being relatively small for Barcelona's goals nowadays this is still one of the greatest memories that any Barcelona fan has.

I think he grew up extreme poverty in some favela or slum and his physique was partly effected by poor nutrition as a youth. I remember reading somewhere his teeth was also partly rotten because of it.

As a Valencia CF fan, I got very upset with this result at that time because that meant that Valencia CF didn't qualify for the Champions League. But it turned out to be beneficial because Valencia CF won the league the following season with seven points ahead of Deportivo de La Coruña. All the attackers were in their peak at that time: R9, Rivaldo, Bebeto, Denilson, Edmundo etc. In 2002, R9 just came back from injury, Rivaldo came off a troubled last season under Van Gaal, Denilson wasn't in his pomp, Ronaldinho just came off his first season in Europe and Kaka was green. The major difference I think in 2002 was that they were more organized and more experienced.
