What other pleasure is left in a lifetime when you score a hat trick - a free kick and a bicycle kick - in the last minutes of the last game of the championship qualifying your team for the champion's league against an opponent that didn't get qualified because of goal average. If I remember well, barcelona got qualified despite they had the same goal average as valencia since they scored more goals in la liga that year. Sadly Rivaldo won't get the same credit as players with less talent who played with better teamates. Rivaldo was not the fastest or strongest player...he also had a strange posture due to his curved legs...but he had a magical relationship with the ball! His feet knew how to speak the ball's language...he was so instinctive that you can't predict what's coming next. No need for fancy dribbles, just pure understanding of the whole dynamics between the ball and the player. Actually, you c'ant teach instinct in a football school...but you can only teach a formatted technique that will get you away with most teams but never make you among the greatest like Rivaldo.

I remember watching this game on sky in my uni pub and thought the rookie commentator was being a bit too pro Barcelona. He announced the two Valencia with a degree of discomfort. Didn't bother me much. I went mental when he got his third but I felt for Valencia as they had just lost the European Cup on pens. People in England who are gay for Rooney and Drogba haven't got a clue about football when you compare them against true greats like Rivaldo.

Not taking anything away from Rivaldo's performance... but looking at his team mates at barca in this video... there are HEAPS of ex-Arsenal players in that team. You'd be forgiven to think that Barca and Arsenal have some deal going on, considering more modern players like Henry, Hleb, Fabregas?, Van Bronckhorst
