Played riven mid a ton, it's pretty good but most match ups counter you with what i call multiple layers of safety that prevent you from ever engaging or trading. Take neeko mid for example : Layer 1 : range Layer 2 : e snare Layer 3 : w invisibility + clone Layer 4 : ult shield + cc Layer 5 : when neeko's dmg is enough to kill riven before riven kills neeko (poke and burst when riven is low enough) Layer 6 : tower proximity Layer 7 : wave control through better and safe waveclear Layer 8 : jungle help Layer 9 : flash, in case riven somehow manages to cross all the safety layers above. This makes for very onesided match ups, when players are at least playing decently, where you just have to be patient, let the cs go, avoid and tank the bullying poke, untill you get enough resources to oneshot your opponent in 1 trade before he can counter attack to punish your engage. And to make this work, you also gotta know your damage to know when you kill your ennemy, how much you can tank, not get surprised by ennemy jungle, and know these weird match ups to break through these multiple safety layers. But playing Riven mid also comes with an advantage : midlaners have no idea how to play against Riven mid because they've most likely never seen it, and also, from my own experience, generally don't play as well as toplane players do at a given elo.

Agreed I’m in low elo and have played a good amount of riven mid (only play her mid) and Im climbing slowly, but It’s been games where they’re doing more dmg than me and can zone me off from cs because they’re ranged mages, but what I realized usually works is to slowly poke them down and that in mid lane level 6 is a huge opportunity for kills because you can basically just all in them at full hp and kill them especially if you have ignite because they’re so squishy usually. My biggest problems so far have been akali, syndra, oriana because her shield negates all early trades to where she usually wins them, and pantheon . I think after this next patch with riven buffs and more Lp gain I should climb even faster

@@soulunbound4882 well, it's hard to find openings for an all in or even poke, because of all the safety layers I mentionned above, and if you go for poke, they'll generally out trade you dealing more dmg to you, while you walk away, than you did to them. However, riven generally has better all in, meaning you only need to poke them to below ~60% hp to be able to secure a kill in an all in, while you can generally survive an all in if you have above ~10-20% HP. Your win condition is to surprise them with an all in after poking them enough, while maintaining decent farm, theirs is to not let you play the game by denying you every engage and CS they can and continuously poke you down untill you die or are forced out of lane, progressively falling behind untill they can oneshot you without taking any risk. Of course, the lower the elo, the more likely they are to missuse their safety layers which gives you more openings, but you being lower elo yourself, you're also more likely to not see these openings or know how to use them, and to suffer from the poke. I guess, in lower elo, what could make riven mid work is how players don't know how to position or respect your strength, letting themselves easely get all inned or poked, and generally panicking when it happens, not preventing or punishing it properly, which doesn't normally happen in mid to high elo.
