Is this true? I thought Myst held the title until The Sims in 2002. Riven also sold very, very well, but Myst was just a phenomenon unto itself. According to a history of Riven that I read recently by The Digital Antiquarian, Myst returned to the top of the sales charts in 1997 anticipation of the release of Riven (unheard of for a nearly four year old game at that time), and then again *after* Riven's release in 1998. Riven never had a chance to catch up.

To be honest, I was really hoping that you'd be able to salvage the old live-action footage by some miracle, but I have to admit that the new model of Gehn doesn't look anywhere near as jarring as I'd feared. And the need to switch to 3D models is a perfectly understandable compromise. Couldn't be happier with everything else we've seen so far though! Huge congratulations and thank you to both the original Riven team and everyone who's worked on the remake!

Then again, there's always the option to take a page from Myst IV's book (pardon the pun) and fix the camera angle during cutscenes (I can't think of a single instance in the original Riven that would allow freeroam while a character is on-screen). Not to mention the capabilities of modern AI-powered solutions, which allow upscaling old footage and converting it to a more or less photorealistic 3D character model with animations. Though I can understand if something this experimental would be too risky for a project like Riven. However, from what I understand, Cyan decided to add new dialogue in this version of Riven, in which case neither of the solutions I described would be viable (since two actors from the original cast had sadly passed away). All things considered, I'm pretty happy with what we're getting with this version.

Really surprised to see this! This game was a heavy influence in my professional life. I later went on to become a digital matte painter and worked with some of the old matte world digital folks. In my humble opinion, this game has one of the best atmosphere's/world building of any game I've ever played. It's such a mysterious and iconic style. I was like 10 years old watching my sister playing this as a kid and was completely mesmerized. I revisited the original about 10 years ago on college and was blown away. I had to get help for the marble puzzle, but man what a game. Was following the stary expanse project for a while. Glad Cyan decided to make this beloved classic a reality.

Amazingly this game felt and sounded so real. You could almost "feel" the heat of the area sometimes. And yet, it was all still images, but you'd "turn" to go different ways. Amazing to see it finally become "real time". Still my favorite of the series.

One of my favorite games of all time-I still have the 5-disc set. The best part about playing Riven was how utterly alien everything was, and how symbols, environments, and even sounds were important to solving the puzzles. It was a self-contained, logical and internally consistent game that forced you to think outside your normal expectations of what things should be and how they should work.

I remember when Riven came out. I spent weeks locked in my room in the dark on PS1 with a CRT TV. Riven was mind-blowing; the slide show part didn't matter. At the time it looked amazing and was so immersive it set the bar for years to come.

I was so obsessed with the whole Myst/Riven games I was able to get to know one of the developers who introduced me to Rand Miller. He signed my Book of Atrus as well as my original Myst game box. I still look at my From Myst to Riven coffee table book. I always wanted a Real Riven experience and I followed the Starry Expanse project for a couple of years. And now just a few short days to play Riven as it should be and also on VR. I literally can't wait!

Unfortunately in a VR supported game there's no good way around that. Even in that tiny little space he would be noticeable as perfectly flat if they just used the old footage. Not an ideal situation to work with, but I can tell they're doing what they can to keep his original performance alive.

@@Macil2018 There is, but they also have the additional issue where they've also expanded the game to be even bigger, so even if not for VR, they would have had to use 3D models for the new content. So even if they didn't have VR support they'd have had to use models to avoid the flat characters clashing with the 3D ones.

Holy shit this looks even more beautiful than I was expecting. I never finished Riven proper when I played it back at the time of its original release. Guess I'll finally get around to seeing the story through.

My father is into Myst, he was big about Macintosh products when it came out. I remember my dad showed me the Myst remaster, it was the first time I'd experienced Myst. Personally, I don't have the remaster-- I have the 1999 version of the game for Steam. I've been playing around with it, and while the gameplay is objectively outdated, I'm still dedicated to playing it the classic way. I've loved the old style of 3D ever since laying my eyes on Fallout and Myst, among others. Thanks Cyan team! Also, I fall asleep to the Myst and Riven soundtrack these nights. I love the ambience.

My favorite game of all time. I think a part of me will always go back to the original, flawed as it might be by today's standards, but I applaud all the effort and care that went into this remaster and reimagining. Looks like I am buying Riven for the fourth time (the original 5 CD set, the single DVD version, the iOS version, and now this version). :)

Super exciting! I loved playing RIven together with my siblings and scribbling down all our clues in the included note booklet. Always re-walked back to the beach area to see those dinosaur like creatures on the rocks. The Riven graphics blew me away, just like playing Myst the first time did too.

Memory unlocked - I remember being mind-blown seeing this game for the first time in the 90s - had played PC version at a relative's house before getting it on PS1 that xmas. I don't think I got very far but was cool to just get lost and find things at random.

And the future of the Ronay. Without the Stranger, Atrus would have been unable to gather the survivors of D'ni. Furthermore, the fall of Terahnee (and there'd have been an internal explosion eventually) might have been followed by a horrific vengeance.

@@KororaPenguin Without the stranger (which is just really oursevles) Atrus could not have punished his sons, and saved his wife from his father, his dauther could never have been born if his wife was not saved. Atrus is a kind of lone scientist, the man and his family live in the desert away from civilisation but also close to it. Atrus present a way of living, the journaling, the science, the adventure and we are kind of part of the story and that is the beauty of it we are Atrus's friend.

Take a bow, Cyan, this is _stunning._ Absolutely mesmerising, and it's only the _trailer._ Yes, it's not at a level of _perfection_ yet (the cart that takes you to boiler island doesn't take off with proper inertia, something seen in some animations in previous teaser footage too), but that's not needed for this to take my breath away. You care deeply about this game and its history, and it shows.
