I used to run a humber keel up there taking steel pilings from Keadby to the British Waterways yard at I think, Castleford. The unloading bay was indeed for unloading coal for the power station. Pusher tugs used to shove long lines of buttys down from a coal mine further upriver and then a big 'hand' would pick up a butty and tip it upside down to empty the coal onto a conveyor belt . Lots of memories including seeing the Aire and Calder water bright orange. We put some into the 'bog bucket' and it took a layer off the galvanising and left it very shiny. Lucky the dangly bits didn't dip into it! Wow, this vlog has let loose loads of memories.

Well a big thanks for showing Smith & Sons Boatyard at Castleford where my boat Lazy Days was built in 1930. The pub behind laid on an evening for us and invited the old codgers of the town and the British Legion. Bangers and spuds were served and the beer was a lot cheaper than London, the old boys remembered they shipyard and timber yard across the road. The yard sold out later to a company that ran tugs and barges to the coal power station you showed. Through the local paper we found the daughter of the shipwright that built LD, it was a great 3 week trip From Cuxton on the Medway and back again.

Another time we met a barge skipper who actually had a huge punt gun that he could mount at the bow. In November he used to turn the engine off before a corner and glide up to a flock of ducks. He reckoned he sometimes got as many as 20 to flog in the pub.

The sunken boat is or was the Grace Darling. Was moored at the Staithes and broke loose in the floods a few years ago. Ended up of the opposite bank to where it lies now, but then slid off in the next flood and sunk. Been there over a year now. They could get cranes onto the field beside it, no idea why they haven’t. I live close so walk dogs there daily.
@NarrowboatWill3 жыл бұрын
I thought the weight of a crane in that field would be dodgy. Shame it wasn't rescued. If my boat drifted off I would've got it back. Thanks for the info. Interesting.
@MsVanorak3 жыл бұрын
get a couple of all terrain forklifts could surely drag that sunken boat out onto the field but after the crop ha been harvested. i presume they won't allow it to stop there for ever.
@NarrowboatWill3 жыл бұрын
It's been there for a while I've been told. It drifted from its moorings in the floods a few years ago. I don't know why it's still there. Perhaps it cost more than it's worth. You know. Thanks for watching.
