I was born in 1995 and don't remember much of anything from the late 90's or early 2000s, but the biggest thing to me that stood out from the 90's and earlier (compared to today) is that people weren't on there phones. It was pretty much everyone interacting with each other. I'm 23 and still sometimes go to the mall but whenever I see groups of friends together they are all on their phones. Why go to the mall if you aren't even going to do anything other than play on your phone? Your friends are right next to you! Talk to them! Hang out with them! One day you'll regret how much time you spent on your phone.

@@melgibsonaftertwobeers6119 As I've told people before, I think the 90's was about the perfect balance of technology. Just enough to make things more comfortable and convenient and interesting but not enough to dominate our lives. I've seen that 7-11 video and yeah, people had less fear and more openness/friendliness towards each other. Now a days even service workers are often rude and unfriendly towards you! Check out some of the high school graduation videos of the 90's too. The kids seem so much more mature and on point compared to today. So I really don't think it's just our imagination, things really have changed and a lot of it has been for the worse. Having grown up in the 90's it feels like I've been coming off of a high ever since.

Honestly cell phones brought a lot of problems to our youth, did you actually think endless amounts of mostly unfiltered information delivered to your fingertips in the matter of seconds, good or bad was a good idea? Well sir the youth now was the Guinea pig for that agenda and you see how that’s turning out. So I’d say he’s on to something without internet there was no politics getting pushed on kids, people didn’t even curse on television and influencers didn’t have platforms to co parent peoples children. But yeah!!! What could possibly go wrong when you give a emotionally unstable, not mature children the options to be exposed and de-sensitized to literally anything but dogs cats and Animals. Like what would you save first a dog or a homeless person? See communication was never the issue… communication with the wrong influence is the issue that can’t be controlled when everyone has access to literally anything and everything from information to narcotics. Definitely a tool you should give the masses. What could possibly go wrong. There is bad with every good we just got to be the people it gets tested out on before they work out the kinks.

WOW 1990 until 2006 means this mall only had a 16 yr lifespan, which is so short for a mall. There's some still around me barely hanging on in 2024 that were built and never remodeled even once since opening in 1984 like Middlesboro KY Mall. Great video I miss the 80s and 90s so much, if they ever do time machines I'd leave this dreaded awful time period and return to then and never come back.

2005-2006 was the last time to really enjoy malls. From 2007 onward, malls began a slow death. So sad because the 80s, 90s and early 2000s was the best with malls. It was your local Disneyland. It felt good to walk into Bloomingdales, Waldenbooks, Suncoast and Gap. The big question is, can we bring this back but update it for the upcoming 2020s America? If Stranger Things has proven one thing is that people still like past things.

I'd say we sorta peaked in 1998... then society began a downhill slump. 9/11 and the 2008 economic collapse were the death blows. The thing is though, kids born in the 80's are starting to have children of their own...and they see how kids now interact very differently than we did when we were their age. They see the problems, and it's making them nostalgic for simpler times.... Look at synthwave music, it's about encompassing the comfyness of the 80's/90's... People want to go back. Stranger Thing's popularity is another testament to that... Be the change you wanna see. Put down your phone, say hi to a stranger and dust off the atari 2600. Stop ordering from Amazon and start going to the shops.

I remember Walmart being there, and the neon pink ceiling lights around the mall. The train ride/rides upstairs. I always liked to watch it but never had the courage to ride the train. Guess I will never know what it was like to ride it. I remember the clothes store Dillard's, and thought it was cool that there were 2 floors (escalator in store). As time went on I swore that River Falls was about to smash the Green Tree Mall. Now look at Green Tree today! I do miss this mall, don't get me wrong. Wish the theme park was still around!

Man that music and footage at the beginning took me right back to being an 7 year old boy with my grandma and mother going shopping at the mall in cape. My sister wasn’t quite old enough to go with us all the time so I ended up riding in the back seat of my grandmas car laid out across the back while we drove to our local mall which seemed like it took a life time when it was only 25 minutes. When we would leave we would ALWAYS eat out before heading back. Restaurant food was INCREDIBLE back then and we used to eat at a place called the Pasta House Co. Inside the mall that was decorated as if it were on the outside. It had an outdoor seating area which you could sit at and people watch or inside where it was more busy. To this day I love their food even though they are only located in Saint Louis. They had the best damn salad and toaster raviolis you would ever have. I haven’t been there in a few years. As for the mall itself the whole place was full of so many wonderful stores and products. Venture, KB Toys, JC Pennys, Chic-Fil-A, This Nacho and Chili Dog place and they had like a dog mascot on the front it was really good. In the middle of the mall there was a HUGE area that went down into the ground I would say maybe 20 foot or so by these 3 or 4 huge steps that led to a wishing fountain full of change and that shot up in the air. I always had to climb down there and throw Pennie’s in. Oh man what magical magical times.

I frequently shopped at malls growing up from infancy to my late teens/early twenties and still do when a feeling of nostalgia is present. Those times were the best, especially in the 90s-00s. I wish there was a way to rewind to those days. I miss them. Today’s kids have no idea how much fun we had. Also, those young kids would be in their thirties today.

Yup, I would have been about the same age as those little kids on the carousel, 37 today. Parents took my brother and I to River Fair all the time. Everyone I know my age thinks the wrong mall died, we were pretty heartbroken when it closed.

It's so strange to think that a mall that was doing so well and had so much to offer in 1993 would be doing so poorly that it had to close just 13 years later. It's sad and it's hard for me to understand.
@oldtwinsna8347
@oldtwinsna8347 Жыл бұрын
High fixed costs. Even a residential home's AC goes bust it can be a 10k replacement cost. In a mall that's easily closer to one million. Maintenance costs are super high and it has to come from somewhere. Stores in a mall have to pay essentially what is a gross receipts fee, and that, along with mandatory hours that may not be compatible with certain types of stores, drives sticker prices up big time. Far cheaper for a retailer to sit in a standalone location and avoid much of all that.
@pannoni1491
@pannoni1491 3 жыл бұрын
And now everyone shops at home online, and if they decide to go out to the mall, they have their heads glued to their phones. Big box and strip center retail that's closer to home doesn't help either. There was no such thing as "e-commerce" in 1993, and you had to rely on print/TV advertising and then drive to the store. Still, I get chills hearing those scoring sound effects on those Skee-Ball machines back when they always cost a quarter, and nowadays most machines are 50 cents. Thanks for sharing!

There was no Suncoast at River Falls Mall, but there was one across the street at the Green Tree Mall. What you are seeing in this video is a very similar store called Saturday Matinee, which was owned by Trans World, the company that eventually bought and eventually merged all the national mall and video store chains under the FYE brand. Apparently Waxworks (which also ended up being bought by Trans World) had another video retail store like this called Reel Collections, affiliated with Disc Jockey Records which was also at this mall, but we do not see Reel Collections in this video. I had mistakenly said this in a previous post that I have retracted. I did go to this mall and all these stores at the time, but have no recollection of Reel Collections, just Saturday Matinee. I didn't have enough money to pay for full-price videos at the time and usually just bought the $2.99 cast off tapes that video rental stores would clearance.

Oh gosh, what a cool video of better days when malls were fun to go too. I sure miss the music and video stores where i would go spend my allowance at our local mall every weekend and buy a record album or a vhs movie. Seeing Radio Shack in malls was a staple at most of them having one. I bought my first stereo system with the big speakers at Radio Shack in 1987 and still have it yet in my home. Works great yet and never will get rid of it, its just a reminder of better times. Miss the big department stores too like Sears where i got my first boombox in 1983 for my birthday at Sears. Thank you for a great video of your mall. Brings back great memories very much. Oh and loved the food courts with variery of places to eat too. Ate alot of meals at those too!!

Filming this while riding in a wheelchair greatly improved the quality of the film. Normally, when people film while walking the picture bounces up and down slightly. This is due to the bouncing nature of walking. However, riding in a wheelchair on a smooth floor provided a similar film capture method as that of a film crew's camera dolly.

The arcade / fun land area was a total blast. It's a shame the mall closed up, however I did see there is an arcade / fun center being built in Clarksville when I was down there the other week. It’s good to see a healthy mall even if it was 30 years ago. You just can’t get the experience online like you could in the big malls where you can see first hand the things businesses sold, touch and see the products, and people watch. There would be so many people in the mall that you could observe people without them knowing you’re observing them. You could tell what kind of shape you yourself were in because you had other people to compare to. The mall would let you know if you needed to start working out again. It was probably no coincidence that the golden age of malls was also the golden age of workout gyms.

I was 16 when this mall opened. A large part of my teens and 20's were spent hanging out here, particularly upstairs at the arcade/minigolf/movies. Back when teens just hung out at the mall instead of roaming in packs like wild dogs causing trouble. I wish it was still around so I could take my 5yr old here instead of driving all the way over to Louisville to places like Malibu Jacks. Those stores that are now gone that I miss: waldenbooks, suncoast, radio shack, payless, toys r us. Just saw on the news there's some kind of big announcement on Tuesday about the remaining space bass pro hasn't gobbled up. Hopefully something like malibu jacks, main event, or dave and busters. With the crappy weather around here being too hot in the summer and too cold in the winter, we need family friendly places to gather indoors. Cross your fingers!
