Hi Tommy have you fished any of the Wakefield sections of the river Calder?? Reason I ask is it's my home city , Some really nice fish have been caught near the bridge where the Vauxhall dealership is , Some nice chub , barbel , bream, roach and perch and the odd carp

Similar tales of woe on many rivers opening day, very worrying our local river seems almost devoid of fish activity not even any fry in the margins should be black with tiny fry,rivers look ok but the truth Is pollution and predation has taken its toll on many of our rivers, dark days ahead for river fishing sad to say.We will all be fishing muddy puddles with the rivers just open sewers before long.

The management of our rivers is the responsibility of the environment agency. We might as well give up on them now, as the EA is just another underwhelming, underperforming part of government. I weep for the future of our natural waterways.There is more interest in having otters back in our rivers. However, it won't take long before otters disappear again, due to lack of prey.
