I've noticed myself over the years having travelled around places fishing in ireland, its not a bad idea to check into the nearest town to where you want to have some rod time and there's always a contact of some sort that will point you to a permit. Either a gun store or a fishing tackle store or maybe the local gardai will point you in the right direction. But they're usually handy to find and they have to be because they want your money at the end of the day.

Theres 2 good shops in Ballina and Foxford. They will give you all the info you need. The ridgepool is normally booked weeks in advance especially in July.

Nowt to do with drag, a bad workman blames his tools. Why are you pulling out/giving line to it? schoolboy error.

A: I didnt set the drag properly (not blaming the reel but myself) B: Theres 100m+ of line out when I lost the fish so I dont think pulling a few inches of line to test the drag is going to have any influence on the hook hold. Ive lost fish in the exact same place before as theres a ridge between me and the fish. The only cure was to not let him down there in the first place.
