7-30-18 I saw a rustling in the thick weeds when I was out in our lake. After 20 minutes I saw an otter pop it's head up. For the next 40 minutes I waited patiently for the otter to come out in open water. I could hear sounds like it was crunching on bones so I knew it wasn't feeding on fish. When it finally came out in the open I knew the crunching sound was the otter biting and chewing the plastron of the the turtle to get into the intestines. This must be a delicacy for an otter.

At the beginning of the video, the cameraperson states that the fight had apparently been going on for an hour. Perhaps the snapping turtle had been more aggressive and agile at the start, but by the time the video started, the otter had already injured the turtle.
@TheChitown5
@TheChitown5 Жыл бұрын
@@stevebusby6618 Malawimom never witnessed a fight only heard an otter that had flipped the turtle and was eating it. Turtle was already sick and dying at the start. Otter finished off an easy meal. A healthy adult that size would have easily swam away from the otter if attacked and buried itself in the mud. Snappers can stay under water longer than otters and this one would have been too big to drag out. Otters can't drown snappers but very large adult snapping turtles can drown and kill otters and probably do on occasion in Wisconsin and Minnesota.
@malawimom
@malawimom Жыл бұрын
@@TheChitown5 I think you're absolutely wrong. The turtle was not sick. I had seen it everyday just out from our dock. What I believe happened is somehow the otter got it into thick reeds where the turtle could not maneuver then kept attacking it.

That's how otters drown turtles, they flip them over in the water just like that, when a turtle is flipped over on its shell, it sticks its head out instantly. This allows the otter too drown it while it's on top of the turtle , I've seen this technique done before when I lived in Minnesota,. Very clever I'd say.

All that snapping turtle needed was one bite to mortally wound that otter. But as you can see the otter is far to skilled and confident in the water. It’s like cats and venomous snakes, all it takes is one bite, but that doesn’t stop the cat from putting itself in harms way and swatting the snake as it lunges in.

@Uncle Putin never heard that before. We have weasels, nutria, beaver, mink, and the big long river otters here in the Pacific Northwest. It's always fun to be on one of the bazillion streams near sunset when everything seems to be more active. Might be that we see more critters due to the quietness of floating in the boat w/o engine running.

Members of the very large “weasel” family, which otters are, all have unbelievable stamina as in badgers, stealth as in weasels, strength and ferocity as in honey badgers and wolverines, and unbelievable focus and determination as in mongooses (especially against large fast and deadly snakes). It’s perhaps the most amazing carnivorous family in all of the mammalian orders (I probably didn’t say that right but you know what I mean). Stories about them, as in this video, are fascinating to watch, unless you like snapping turtles.
@Undivided_X
@Undivided_X 3 жыл бұрын
Agree with all except mongooses. Not disputing their abilities, just that they're not members of the Mustelid family (weasels) but are Herpestids, they have their own family. Also they're Feliformes, having more cat-like features evolutionarily, whereas mustelids are caniformes.
