I recently had a few weeks away holidaying at one of my favorite gold bearing spots, Reedy Creek near Beechworth in north east Victoria, Australia. I spent 11 days sluicing, panning & crevicing, which included almost 3 days digging this hole, but I didn't dig all day on most days. The rest of the time I spent catching up with friends in the area & just enjoying the great Australian bush. Cheers, Andrew.

Great idea for dealing with clay. Everyone has their own way of doing things, trial and error, right. It does take a bit to get it right, but that's the fun, learning.🤗

Thanks for the comment William. You're right, if everyone did every thing the same way, life would be boring.

Good idea putting the punch plate at the bottom of the flare. Never seen that before.

Thanks for the comment Michael. The gate is very beneficial in high hard clay areas to give you the opportunity to break it up before letting the gravels go through the sluice. You can actually use anything for the gate, punchplate, flue guard, piece of tin, even a short length of fence paling. The gate in the video is a section of flue guard folded over to make it double thickness then folded at the ends to match the angle of the flare. Cheers.

That is a decent size sluice.

G'day Steve, thanks for the comment. Yes it is a decent size. 138cm (54 1/2 inch) long, 74cm (29 1/8 inch) wide across the flare intake, 32cm (12 1/2 inch) wide across the riffle catchment & 63cm (24 3/4 inch) flare front to back. This is the second river sluice I built, the first one was nearly 2 feet longer an inch or so wider across the riffle area & 3 inches wider across the flare intake.

Yes. Most are very small, but topaz, quartz crystals & citrine can be up to thumb size or a bit bigger.

You have your Sluice set up all wrong . For one the expanded metal in your Sluice is wrong you have it sideways . For two just put a 1/4" punch plate a 1/2" above your flare and over 3/4's of your Sluice that way you can just shovel right on it and let the water do the work .

Thanks for your comment William. The sluice is set up correctly & the expanded metal is the right way around for this application. The expanded mesh is only there to allow larger rocks to flow off the end so they don't interfere with the separation of the gold from the gravel that happens under it. This is not a flat sluice for the whole length. What you can't see in this video is the 2 inch vertical drop from the flare into the catchment section. This vertical drop is right at the end of the flare & just in front of the mesh. You can see the gap from 4:20 Under the mesh is part of a rubber door mat, miners moss & a riffle plate on top of those. The riffle plate sits about 2 inches away from the flare drop off so the gravel falls straight to the bottom of the sluice just in front of the leading riffle of the riffle plate. At the beginning of the video you can see me shovelling the gravel without the gate. The gate is essential to hold back the wash because there is so much clay in this creek that you need to break up before letting it go through.

The second time out with my high banker I had the expanded mesh in the wrong way around, and it made no difference to the amount of gold I caught at the end of a 1 1/2 hour run. I run it the conventional way if there is one.
